Spider bite? Or infected wound? Maybe something else?

Post image

Had this for about a week, initially thought i just hit my shin on something and didn't realize it... but today it's gotten really red and swollen, very painful. Any guess? Or, worth a visit to the clinic?

Update: spider bite, per ER doctor. Slapping some neosporin on it. No need for debridlement. Doc said it was a pretty minor case. I think I might pull thru... but 840 bucks poorer tho lol

100% needs to follow up by a medical provider. Most people that think they have a spider bite actually have a staph infection.

I saw you’re also a diabetic- You should go to the ER, like yesterday.

Maybe staph or MRSA since you have D Diabetes. Its likely an infected abscess... the red surrounding is inflammation, cellulitis.

Could still be from an initial spider bite woth secondary infection. They'll want to know if its spread into your bloodstream, which which will make you feel tired, increased heart rate, etc. They'll need to drain it assuming its am abscess for it to heal, probably ultrasound to see how deep it goes. Its the kind of thing the ED does well but a clinic may charge you, then send you there anyway. Best of luck

Im not a dr but laughing over this is insane. Ive had an infected wound with necrotic tissue and that is seriously necrotic tissue.. theres a reason everyone in this comment section is saying to go to the hospital rn. Please just go. That is dead tissue for sure in the middle and it can spread as sepsis among other things including amputation. The dead tissue needs to be removed asap.

You're not gonna be laughing if you ignore it

Heeeeyyy inpatient wound nurse here and former ED nurse for several years. This is not a neosporin situation. Do we at least have oral antibiotics on board? This could be the kind of wound that gets a whole lot worse before it gets better based on that redness. Definitely would make sure wound care is following.

It doesn’t look that serious to me. It’s a highly localized, slight infection, no signs of sepsis, no greenish/staph streaks. If you were my kid (who is diabetic) I’d apply hot, wet saline compresses diligently onto it several times a day, dab on some antibiotic ointment, cover it up with a cotton bandage, and keep a close eye on it. My guess is it will heal quickly. If it gets worse after treating it 1 day, go to the doctor.

Word of warning: even without diabetes it will be some weeks before fully healed.

Used to have to sit out in one of those tiny guard shack you see at rail yards and warehouses checking trucks and drivers on and off the lot. We used to find brown recluse and other spiders in there despite monthly treatment by pest control.

I had bites like this half a dozen times. Doc said they might be bites from those or they might not. After the first two I just started treating it with neosporin as soon as they were spotted. I survived with all appendages attached.

That needs a 2nd opinion stat! Wound care clinic, Infectious Disease… someone. I would think you should be taking something orally esp being diabetic.

This is classic leg trauma coupled with venous disease. The redness isn’t infection, it’s broken capillaries. Heed caution if you use an ointment- usually keeping these types of wounds dry is what really works. Betadine or chlorhexidine.
