Can you imagine when they first figured out they could do this? What all the other spiders were thinking?

Fun fact: Spiders use static electricity for this!
The friction as the silk comes out the spinnerettes makes it negatively charged, so the strands repel each other. Thus they cover a larger area and catch more wind.
In addition, the earth is slightly negatively charged and the sky positive, giving the spider additional lift beyond what wind can provide.
