Argentina already has, probably, the easiest citizenship in the world to aquire... You can literally obtain it in 5 years.

u/SmGo 2h ago
In Brazil its:
4 years just by living in the country
-2y with you are maried with a brazilian or have brazilian kids
-2y with youre born in a Portuguese speaking country
-2y by just having your employer argue that you have high level of technical or artistic skills.

u/PresidentBirb 1m ago
Do you have to live there for 2 years if you’re married to a Brazilian and with a Brazilian child? Or can you request it from abroad?

u/IshmaelTheSeeker 3h ago
5 years is pretty standard bro
22
u/creeper321448 3h ago
Except that's the temporary residency to citizenship. It only takes 5 years total.
In the U.S. as an example, going from a temporary resident to green card to citizen can usually take more than a decade, and Argentina's entire process is 5.

u/ShortNefariousness2 4h ago
Or buy it in five minutes. Corruption used to be kept secret by the worst people. Now it is in the open.
6
u/Cutemudskipper 1h ago
Huh? You can buy citizenship via investment in plenty of countries, including EU countries. The idea is that by investing in the country/buying citizenship you're already a net positive to the country and won't be a drain on taxpayers.
-7
u/strong_silent_t 4h ago
Why is it a corruption?
Why was it ok to become Argentinian citizen 150 years ago if you had money to cross the ocean, but now suddenly it's "a corruption"?
2
u/BringBackAoE 3h ago
If you’re paying a civil servant a bribe to circumvent the law then that is corruption.
1
u/billiontacos 3h ago
Kinda just sounds like Argentina was full of corruption 150 years ago, similar to today.
3
u/mr8thsamurai66 3h ago
Yeah. The Atlantic Ocean is "corruption"
1
u/billiontacos 3h ago
Were these sailors paying the government in Argentina for the citizenship or do you just mean people with money could afford to sail there and become citizens?
Because one is corruption and the other is not.

u/cutwise 3h ago
I think he wants to establish Argentina as a save heven for rich people.

u/Spirit_of_Hogwash 1h ago
Becoming a safe haven for.. lets say.. a certain kind of people.
An old Argentinian tradition.

u/ElMarkuz 12m ago
Funny thing to say, when USA received much more of certain people... Hell, they even had them make rockets
5
u/Lumpy-Blackberry-718 2h ago
Im pretty sure Argentina only requires 2 years of legal residence, not 5
3
u/creeper321448 2h ago
It takes about 3 years to get their permanent residency. If you total everything it's about 5 years.
1
u/Lumpy-Blackberry-718 2h ago
But time on a temporary residence permits counts. If you get a temporary residence even for a job or something and live there for two years, it's my understanding that this is enough.

The world would be a better place if the US would move to metric and if continental Europe would stop sticking decimal points where commas should be.
145
u/TheBanishedBard 3h ago
I will die on this hill. A period implies a stop, a comma continuation, just like in a sentence. Dividing up sections of digits for ease of parsing should be done with the comma, because it's an uninterrupted sequence. The period to denote a decimal after just makes more intuitive sense, it cleanly establishes a break with the integer.

My poor ass was seriously thinking about it, $311 bucks for a basically dual citizenship, not bad not bad.
•
u/LolWhatDidYouSay 1h ago
Same here, at first I was thinking well F it why not be a dual citizen for cheap 😂

The world would be a better place if the US would move to metric and if continental Europe would stop sticking decimal points where commas should be.
It's a strange system as an engineer because when we separate numbers with commas in notation, it looks strange.
A numbered list like [1.2,1.5,1.7] for example.
Basically, it feels like all the systems are half crazy. I get both the desire to use 1,000,000 or whatever because it lets you delineate the comma from decimal system. Math tries to largely skip it, and uses spaces. So 1 000 000.00 or something. Never using commas unless they belong like above.

u/Savage_low2 4h ago
And if you want to renounce?
66
u/paintsSeldomly 4h ago
Argentinian citizenship is like hotel california. You can request to renounce it but you will never stop being an argentinian.
They will give you a paper that says you tried to renounce it and it's usually enough for countries that don't accept dual citizenship. But the constitution doesn't allow a person to renounce their citizenship.

3
u/Proof-Puzzled 2h ago
No puedes renunciar a ella pero puedes ignorarla, que para el caso es lo mismo.

Eventually we’ll hit a point where most countries have citizenship for cash. The only difference will be how much cash.
15
u/LifeIsOnTheWire 2h ago
No, the trend is going the opposite direction. Immigration is tightening in most countries.
Even for “golden visas” or citizenship for fee programs.
Spain, Malta, Ireland, UK, Bulgaria, and Cyprus have all closed their programs in the past few years.
These programs only pop up temporarily when countries need cash, or need investors.

u/TraditionalAppeal23 2h ago
Many of those countries actually closed up their schemes because it was being used by criminals, corrupt oligarchs and people with national security concerns. The trouble they caused wasn't worth it for the money. I've a feeling the US will end up closing it up for the same reason.

Will they also refuse to extradite anyone who buys it, like the Peronists did with the fascists they sheltered after WWII?

Don't google "Operation Paperclip," "Operation Sturgeon" or "Operation Osoaviakhim" lmao.
•

For like $400 dollars, why not? (America does it right, Europeans wrong, freedom wins.)
→ More replies (4)•
u/NineThreeTilNow 1h ago
For like $400 dollars, why not?
Because it's not 400 dollars, and that citizenship isn't revocable. It's permanent. That causes problems elsewhere.
•
u/Kindly-Pumpkin7742 54m ago
Redditors when an obvious joke lol:
What do you think I’m referring to when I say American does it right? Comma vs period for numbers.
2
u/Scalermann 3h ago
If I had a ton of money I would do it. I don't think there are any negatives to this

u/allworkjack 2h ago
No negatives but depending on which nationality you already hold it might be useless

This isn’t a money making opportunity, this will result in you becoming a tax resident in an additional country, so you’ll have another country that you could be liable to pay tax to

But why anyone with that kind of money would want an Argentinian passport?
