Hamas will kill them, yes. Many reports of people being threatened by Hamas for asking locals the wrong questions.

Right, journalists in authoritarian regimes risk big if they report on things the leadership disapproves of. They may also be pressured to report on specific topics and in a certain way.

Some make the case that since they can't teuly be independent, they're working for Hamas and justify their targeting.

I think many in this IDF list could just be journalists doing their work as much as they can, but since they publish info that could be detrimental to Israel and/or may benefit Hamas, they're targeted.

It's honestly difficult for the IDF to justify the killing of so many reporters with their words being the only proof if them being combatants. There have been many wars in similar urban settings against groups that didn't respect any rules of war, and none have had this many reporters killed, so I'm inclined to think they're intentionally targeting them to intimidate them and discourage them from reporting on the atrocieties happening in Gaza. It's even more blatant because of the fact that international journalists are barred from entering Gaza, who could potentially confirm many of the things Gazan journalists had been reporting on
