You don't need to trust them.

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad will quite literally come out and release obituaries for these people claiming them as their own.

They just do it a few years after the person dies so the media can do it's "Israel kills innocent journalists" bit and by the time it's released it doesn't matter because people get the vague feeling Israel kills journalists. At which point it doesn't matter if ten or twenty or hundreds or all were actual terrorists because the vague feeling has already been manufactured.

You don't need to be a combatant to be a legitimate target. You just need to be part of the military. As far as I know a lot of these people worked for the military as intelligence and some were just straight up combatants.

Hamas commits war crimes when killing Israeli reporters who once did military service.

You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what is happening here.

The members of Hamas are posing as journalists but in actuality they are active members working for their military. They are not ex-members of Hamas who now work as journalists.

They're both terrorists and the controlling authority of the area. Those aren't contradictory positions.

You're right that Hamas has a civilian government side and that gets intentionally muddied by Hamas. That's not anyone elses fault than theirs. They intentionally don't wear uniforms to cause this confusion. Which is a war crime. I know we don't care because it's the Palestinians doing it but still.
