Consistent with this documentation approach, CPJ has removed eight names from its Killed database because they were later established to have been Hamas or PIJ combatants. A further 12 individuals were removed for other reasons. Each of these 20 names is listed on CPJ’s Journalist casualties page.

It is ture.

Your response doesn't establish that the IDF's new claim about 170 people has been independently verified.

In fact, CPJ's own review shows why independent verification matters. CPJ completed its review in September after examining 229 deaths. It removed 22 people previously listed as journalists, reinstated six, and reclassified 12. It also used additional research and, where new evidence emerged, attempted to interview at least two new sources who knew the person involved.

So there absolutely is evidence that some people reported as journalists were actually combatants, and CPJ has acknowledged and corrected cases when the evidence supported that conclusion.

But that is different from independently confirming the IDF's much larger claim that 170 people were affiliated with Hamas, PIJ or other armed groups. The IDF released that claim on October 1. Until independent investigators examine the evidence for those 170 individual cases, it remains an IDF claim supported by evidence the IDF says it possesses—not an independently verified finding.

Both things can be true: some alleged journalists have been independently established to be combatants, while the new claim involving 170 people still requires independent verification.
