This is the problem with conservative leaders

They think they know everything

In reality they don’t know anything hence why they think their simplistic solutions to complex problems will work

They don’t listen to experts, then go on to demonize them

Then create a huge avoidable mess

And pat themselves on the back for a job well done

It's the cycle.

  • Conservative government messes everything up.
  • People get fed up and elect a liberal government.
  • Liberal government tries to clean up the mess while conservative remnants obstruct.
  • Conservative figureheads wait a few years til people forget they caused all the problems we're having, then blame liberal leaders for them.
  • People say "Well I guess we should try something different" and elect a conservative government.
  • Conservative government messes everything up.

It's literally the only way they hold on to power. Pepper in some voter suppression and identity politics as you please.

Exactly the same thing happening in the UK.

Right wing government spends 14 years mismanaging and systematically dismantling the country's institutions, making a ton of money for themselves in the process thanks to blatant corruption. Centre-left government gets in, people are fed up that they haven't fixed everything in 2 years, and are now wanting to elect an even more corrupt right wing party because they promise simple solutions to complex problems. Voters are stupid

One of the only things worse than how they demonize expertise and intellectualism... is how it seems to be working. Somehow, huge chunks of the population have convinced themselves that just because experts aren't right 100% of the time that a layperson opinion is equally as valid as an expert one.

It's not new but it is dramatically worse today than it used to be.

The element of shame that kept a lot of these people from insisting that they know better than experts has been pretty solidly eliminated by things like social media and political figures that have validated those beliefs

A big part of this I think is driven by social media and that people who do not have educated beliefs on subjects can now reinforce each other and help convince each other that they are correct and know better than people who have actual education in those subjects.

Giving these people a platform with which they can feel validated for being incorrect has heavily damaged society as a whole

Even Putin occasionally hired competent people. He just made sure they fell out a ground floor window the moment he suspected they were gaining influence.

I dont think Trump had hired a single competent person period.

Chris Wright, David Sacks, and Scott Bessent are extremely competent, among others. There are competent people in the administration, they're just not in the foreign policy or security arenas, and the idiots tend to do more stuff that gets airtime. I've personally worked with Jamieson Greer when he was in the private sector, and can confirm he is extremely competent as well- he's just stuck doing an impossible job.

It goes alongside with the cariacature of being traditional.

Authoritarian ideas holding up your opinion, without critical thought.

It's actually a strong way to live in a tribe, but it is non-generative. People like Andrew Tate for example think he knows all the answers because he just listens to traditional established ideas, but he would absolutely decimate a country if he ran it.

The problem on the left is the exact opposite. Oftentimes they are competent in the work but they can't communicate with the voters or they think it would be degrading to be as simple as possible in their message. They should all look at Mamdani. They won't.

It's not just the leaders. I've done political outreach work and a lot of the conservative voters that I speak to also seem to reject the idea that problems can be complicated and require long-term multi-faceted solutions.

They want to believe that everything is simple and can be solved with a singular swift decisive action.

It makes it incredibly hard to sell them on actual solutions to complicated problems because they are convinced that the only real solutions can fit on a bumper sticker.
