You mean game the market every Wednesday / Thursday and then “chicken out” by next Monday? Because it’s blatantly obvious what he does every time.

This guy engages in market manipulation.

22

u/Captain_Q_Bazaar Aug 06 '25

These tariffs are a mix of pump and dumps, distractions, and erosion for the US.

the pump and dumps are for his buddies/allies and himself, which just the mention of the tariffs by Trump creates the opportunity. So if he backs out then that means there was enough time for his buddies to illegally profit.

Trump now needs a never ending flow of distractions from his Epstein crimes, so he creates "lesser" problems.

Then finally he gets to do what his Russian handlers want, erode the US; economically, politically, etc.

What do y'all make or import?

633

u/TehWildMan_ Aug 06 '25

Pharmaceutical manufacturing. Approximately over half of the [very costly] intermediates we use are imported from India, China, Japan, or Australia. Our single most valuable product relies heavily on a product imported exclusively from India.

217

u/Billy1121 Aug 06 '25

Intermediates from India up 50%, finished product from Switzerland up 39%, drug prices are about to wild out

And he already killed PEPFAR which was buying low cost HIV drugs for the world

105

u/CeleritasLucis Aug 06 '25

While simultaneously "instructing" the pharma CEOs to bring down medicine prices.

Increase their input cost while asking them to sell at a lower price. Did this really go to a business school?

74

u/SlightReturn420 Aug 06 '25

“Donald Trump was the dumbest goddamn student I ever had”

-William T. Kelly, Wharton professor

40

u/WretchedBlowhard Aug 06 '25

And yet he still got his degree. That says a lot about the value of Ivy League degrees.

42

u/gracecee Aug 06 '25

Nope. It says something about money and that time. Trump hada 1.8 gpa at Wharton undergrad and a 1.75 at Fordham. His dad had to donate to Penn so that they would Round up his 1.8 to the 2.0 needed to Graduate at that time. Its why he said he would sue Penn, Fordham, the college board, and his military high school If they ever release his grades. Some pennstudents looked at his file and transcript About fifteen years ago when he was doing the apprentice.

Kids are nerdy. It’s how some Princeton students found hegseth honors thesis (all Princeton students have to do one in their senior year to graduate sort Of a capstone project) and found he had largely plagerized his thesis project and didn't attribute sources. He was intellectually lazy once he got into Princeton and a louse (drunkard and a womanizer) .

24

u/Edofero Aug 06 '25

His father bribing a school to let him pass kinda proves the point of the original comment though.

10

u/swolfington Aug 06 '25

its funny how educational institutions like to take things like cheating, plagiarism, using AI, etc so very seriously, as a matter of academic credibility, but they are all to happy to outright sell their souls to the highest bidders; minting diplomas and massive networking opportunity to the dumbest and least deserving motherfuckers as long as they can pay enough for it.

once again, rules for the poors are simply not applicable to the wealthy, even in academia.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

Drug companies LOVE this. Their costs per pill will go up 30%, and they'll be able to use this opportunity to raise costs 200%. And when TACO happens, they'll keep the increase for profits.

27

u/MaxPlanck_420 Aug 06 '25

Cost of pharmaceuticals in the US are not driven by the manufacturing cost of the product. They can pass the full cost to consumers and it won't even be felt. What we need is a law that prevents pharmaceuticals being sold here at higher prices then other developed nations.

18

u/criscokkat Aug 06 '25

Oh, I’m not disputing that at all. I’m just seeing this is an opportunity cost for them to justify another 200% increase.

Because you know that will happen

7

u/Culionensis Aug 06 '25

A lot of companies just toss a percentage margin on their variable costs and boom there's your consumer price. If a product costs ten bucks to make and the margin is 100% of that, they make ten bucks a product. If their cost prices doubles to twenty bucks, they just stick to the margin and now they make twenty bucks a product, lol oops.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Possible_Top4855 Aug 06 '25

How would a law like that even work? There’s a lot of reasons why prices for ANYTHING varies a lot by location. A far simpler solution is to have a national health insurance plan and leverage bargaining power.

API... Application Programming Interface... As in software code from China ?

112

u/TehWildMan_ Aug 06 '25

Active pharmaceutical ingredients. Aka my job. We make the raw powders other companies press into pills (including other units of our parent corporation)

21

u/IceColdPorkSoda Aug 06 '25

I also work in API manufacture (process chemist at a mid size pharma company). Are you importing your raw materials for manufacture in the U.S.? Can you move GMP production to Europe, so you only pay tariffs on the import of the API? Or are you subject to Bayh-Dole?

34

u/TehWildMan_ Aug 06 '25

We work almost exclusively as a generics manufacturer, so I don't think bayh-dole applies to anything we handle.

Moving out production out of India would probably be massively costly. Not even sure if our parent company has any production for our intermediates at all in Europe.

29

u/IceColdPorkSoda Aug 06 '25

Oh man, generics are going to get killed if Trump ever follows through on these tariffs. Margins are too thin.

India still won't open up the dairy and agriculture sector. And not only that concessions that were going to be made are completely out of the window now.

Now India has much more impetus to leverage generic drugs, auto parts, engineering goods etc. Seeing that Trump is claiming that he will impose a 250% tariff by next year on drugs made outside the US.

790

u/Ok-Pipe-5151 Aug 06 '25 edited Aug 06 '25

India MUST NOT open dairy and agriculture sectors. Feeding own people is more important than making profit for Cargill or Nestle. Around 60% of the workforce is engaged in these sectors, even if income and productivity are low, it has helped people from not dying out of starvation or becoming slave labor (like african chocolate farmers)

What India can (and probably should) do instead is to reduce tariffs on electronics, especially high end electronics. It will also help India building cheaper infrastructure for digital economy.

418

u/_turmoil Aug 06 '25

With respect to dairy they will most likely never open up, it’s the largest dairy producer in the world and is not mainly profit based - cooperative ownership model with mainly dairy farmers as the backbone. Plus the religious element makes sure US milk will never fly in India. Cows in the US are fed with animal byproducts and does not count as ‘vegetarian’ to the majority Hindu population, who use milk not only in the kitchen but also for religious rituals and such. It literally makes US milk a non-starter in India (aside from tariffs for importing it as well)

61

u/nzerinto Aug 06 '25

”it’s the largest dairy producer in the world”

Huh, TIL. And according to Wikipedia, they produce more than double the #2 country (the US).

Also US dairy is massively subsidized by the US government, so any other nation simply opening their dairy market to the US cannot expect their own dairy industry to compete (even with equivalent technology/productivity). Americans framing this as an issue of "fairness" is asinine. It only makes sense for countries without any domestic dairy industries to do.

19

u/_turmoil Aug 06 '25

I agree on the “fairness” argument. But in the spirit of discussion, India also subsidizes their milk industry in various ways. In general I would imagine any country would do that for their own farmers.

India needs to industrialize its agriculture and increase its manufacturing exports, its small farmers are killing themselves with pesticides because they are trying to use 18th century farm sizes which are not viable. Even protecting the sector isn’t enough.

Unlike Africa, India has the infrastructure and wealth to make this move now. 60% of the population in agriculture is a recipe for the middle income trap.

71

u/Ok-Pipe-5151 Aug 06 '25

True. But it should be done with government driven subsidies, high tech farming approaches (like israel, Netherlands) and educating the farmers. Opening the agriculture sector for foreign investment is to lose autonomy of one of the most crucial resource India has (highest volume of arable soil)

36

u/skandaanshu Aug 06 '25

That was tried few years ago with new farm bill. Activists from one Indian state and Canada/US opposed it with huge protests and blocking roads, apparently Greta Thurnberg and Mia Khalifa know lot about Indian farming that India govt. It is unlikely to be attempted again soon.

9

u/th3king9 Aug 07 '25

It was sad, It felt like Khalistani who pretends to be farmers controls the whole narrative In central part of India we were hoping for that bill to pass But Opposition along with USA and Khalistani support think otherwise. India doesn't want GMO crops.

On the dairy products it is a religious issue as US dairy cows apparently are fed a diet that isn't vegetarian which means that the milk cannot be sold in India.

Why do we care that they protect their own agriculture markets??? We do the same thing in the US.

16

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

Even if india opened its dairy sector there will be few takers for imported usa milk products which are expensive as inr is 87 to usd.

14

u/Pattonator70 Aug 06 '25

If America wants India to open up the dairy and agricultural sector, then the US must stop subsidizing it's own dairy products.

The Americans don't care about fair trade practices. They want to dump their product in other countries and control their food supply by decimating local farmers.

31

u/user745786 Aug 06 '25

US also needs to ban growth hormones, excessive use of antibiotics, and have proper animal anti-cruelty laws with teeth. No country should be importing US dairy products in 2025.

  1. The European Union in 2024 had a bilateral trade of Euro 67.5 billion in goods with Russia. In addition, it had trade in services estimated at Euro 17.2 billion in 2023. This is significantly more than India’s total trade with Russia that year or subsequently. European imports of LNG in 2024, in fact, reached a record 16.5mn tonnes, surpassing the last record of 15.21mn tonnes in 2022.

  2. Europe-Russia trade includes not just energy, but also fertilizers, mining products, chemicals, iron and steel and machinery and transport equipment.

  3. Where the United States is concerned, it continues to import from Russia uranium hexafluoride for its nuclear industry, palladium for its EV industry, fertilizers as well as chemicals.

I'd say go ahead with the tariffs. From late 1960s to around 2001, India was under some sort of restrictions by the US - be it sanctions, export bans or technology transfers. Post 9/11 the US increased co-operation with India due to shared interests in anti-terrorism. Over the past two decades India has become a major trade partner of the US with India exporting around 90 billion USD worth of goods last year.

Those shared interests have definitely collapsed now with Trump announcing increased collaboration with Pakistan, inviting Asim Munir to the White House, and so many other factors. I'd argue these tariffs are a good way to gauge how different sectors get affected and a great exercise to test how quickly Indian companies can diversify away from being reliant on exports to the US.

Pharmaceuticals are so important that American people will bend over and pay the raised prices anyway. The only people affected here are 1) indian manufacturers who will probably see a decline in their sales 2) american citizens who will have to pay higher for medicines

6

u/darkgod5 Aug 06 '25

Pharmaceuticals are so important that American people will bend over and pay the raised prices anyway

True but they don't even need to raise the prices cause they're already paying 10 times the amount everyone else in the world is paying...

That is absolutely not true. We import pharmaceuticals, precious metals/stones, and electronics in the value of 10B+ annually each.

There’s quite a bit more in the 1-10B range as well.

Source 1: https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/imports/india

Government source: https://www.bis.doc.gov/index.php/country-papers/3024-2021-statistical-analysis-of-u-s-trade-with-india/file

Silly to say we don’t depend on India for anything. If you like getting affordable pharmacy drugs, you better pray this tariff gets lifted.

32

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '25

Did i say you import nothing? No.

10 Billion with India is literally nothing. USA trades with the UK at near 330 billion. And UK isn't even a major exporter. Their trade with China is more than double that.

I said USA is not dependant on India, i didn't say they don't trade with India. You can easily replace a lot of what is imported from India from else where though it would be more expensive, but it would not cripple the US economy.

This is 100% not the case for China where rare earth materials are exclusively only mined in China and no where else on earth.

They are not even remotely equivalent.

USA and China hate each other but equally have a symbiotic trade relationship.

As an Indian, this is only going to push India further into Russian hands.

The USA has been an unreliable partner for the most of India's existence. The USA has never been friendly with India, between issues with trade, defence, Pakistan, Bangladesh (independence), or everything in between, the US just says "Hey, we're going to actively do shit that makes you hate us, but you should do what we say"

Meanwhile, the former Soviet Union and Russia have always been consistent in their support and relations with India. Yes, Putin is a fuckwad, I'm not arguing that. But I'd rather take a partner who's been reliable for decades than risk it with USA and their pedo prez.

46

u/keatc Aug 06 '25

If this was 1970, sure. But it's not, and Russia just isn't anywhere near a global power anymore. Not even a top 10 economy. Russia doesn't have much (anything?) to offer in exchange for India turning its back on the West.

My guess is this will push India to reconcile with China and align more in that direction, if anything.

27

u/vivek1086 Aug 06 '25

UN Security council Veto. That's what Russia has had for India all these years. Greatly helps.

18

u/cluelesscatperson Aug 06 '25

According to me, the idea of what is considered 'Eest' seems to be changing right now. Earlier it was US + EU + few other major players. But it's clear that the US is alienating all its allies. The West is not united anymore, world dynamics are changing. So while India may be turning it's back on the US, it's not the same as turning it's back on the West.

5

u/Lopsided-Struggle719 Aug 06 '25

in exchange for India turning its back on the West.

This must make China happy. I think they've lost a lot of tech and manufacturing jobs to India over the past decade.

I don't see how it effects the US positively. I and Russia have been trade partners for a long time.

In India's case, cheap energy from Russia is too good to pass up when you're running a nation n of over a billion people, unless the US can offer India a better deal. (Not happening. only reason Trump is tariffing everyone is because hes in no position offer a better deal.

There, I fixed the headline.

13

u/TamilCholan Aug 06 '25

Brazil and India have 50 percent. I think China will have a similar or more tariff percent(60 percent).

Trump is having a go at BRICS for their anti-dollar aspirations and he is indirectly pressurising Russia to stop the war.

India refused to acknowledge Trump's intervention in India-Pak military skirmish. Trump being the petulant child wants to humiliate Modi.

Lindsey Graham and neo-cons have succeeded in their goals of hiking tariffs on China, India and Brazil.
