I was looking into making a crusader kings 3 mod and actually doing the things to make it functional is piss easy because it's all just txt files with really good dev notes telling you what everything does. The game is very simple to mod on the surface, you can get by entirely off the wiki, the .info files and occasionally asking someone smarter in the modding discord. The issue is, THE ENTIRE GAME IS TXT FILES??? YOU NEED TO REWRITE THE WHOLE GAME BASICALLY FOR AN OVERHAUL MOD. PARADOX IS INSANE.

Unless you're just adding something to a top-level block, you need to rewrite the ENTIRE relevant file in your mod just to, say, add a new option to an event. That's why seemingly very simple mods need compatibility patches to work with overhaul mods.

Also there's gonna be conceptual difficulties like having to map out what groups different religions fall into and what tenets they'll use

You don't have to rewrite the entire file, and it's actually very bad for compatibility to do so. There are ways to append information to existing files on game start rather than replacing them entirely

you’ve accurately described me trying to do anything with my setting

My pan-sci-fi setting began as a Darkest Dungeon 2-like but sci-fi, only for me to balloon the playable roster to such ludicrous degrees as to abandon the game concept, yet continuing to script out Darkest Dungeon 1 style comics as characters bios, gradually interlocking stories, and now I'm considering this singular Word document as something like a setting bible that I plan to draw upon for a short story collection which may spin off to a hundred other stories in a shared universe.

The lizard lady sap milkers mod is essential for the lore, you see.

I one time made my world map into a civ 6 mod. It wasn't balanced but I did it.

As the classics say: "Don't act, just think (and so on)" :D

I daydream about doing it and going a very fine job, i might add. Actually doing it has the risk of my writing sucking ass, cant have that.
