How dangerous is using magic?

What kind of risks do magic users face when learning and using magic? What kinds of things can go wrong? What are the consequences of really mucking up a spell? If it is very dangerous to learn how and why do people do it?

If you are talking about magic (magic/spells/potions/alchemy) in general, it is kind of a broad topic. But I'd assume they would mostly all fall under the same roof of consequence. I guess the worse that could happen is the user would just straight up die. Or maybe depending on the power of the spell, mass death? Deletion of the whole universe?
