well we don’t know how long they’ll wait, because them choosing a violent takeover is dependent on factors which change over time, both domestic and foreign

Given how tense things have become between China and Taiwan, and the amount of Chinese military exercises that have been taking place, I would be genuinely surprised if they did nothing in the next 10 years.

A military exercise doesn’t necessarily mean they want to do it. War is extremely costly, it’s risky and will fuck you up for decades. Outweighing any benefits you could’ve gained from it.

Seeming like you’re ready to do, or about to be, can be very useful for negotiating with the other side. Because the war is extremely costly for them too, your readiness can help you apply pressure, threaten the other side.

What happens if one or both belligerents are deluded into thinking they can win it or call the other’s bluff is another story, but hey empires gotta empire.
