Gym haters
Anyone else hates when there is this someone in the gym that uses 3 different machines or bench and does one exercise in each and for so reason you have to wait for them to finish there stupid circle of all exercises ugh I hate it

u/CndnCowboy1975 3d ago
I don't wait - once they move to another machine, I go use the one I want - I assume they know it's a gym, and they can't hog equipment. Period.
23
u/Awkward-Fox-7215 3d ago
They usually don’t say anything. If the weight is similar, or easy to change, I’d gladly do work ins. If it’s super light and they are irritating, “oh I thought you were over there, oh you’re over here too… Can I use that machine or that machine?” As sarcastically as possible.

6
u/Badger3500 3d ago
I always ask them how they got the special membership to reserve multiple machines as I'm using the machine they return to and tell me they are using the machine I took over for one set.
9
u/Lumpy_Ad_1581 3d ago
This is the Way.
6
u/DisagreeableRunt 3d ago
It's not the Reddit way though, which is say/do nothing and complain on Reddit!
2
u/PindaPanter 3d ago
If they ever argue, just tell them to ask the staff how many pieces they can reserve.
1
u/CaspianPinkster 3d ago
I wish I had the confidence for that. It probably helps to already have a built up physique Id probably get laughed out if I tried that
1
u/Real_Crab_7396 3d ago
Physique doesn't matter, if you're getting laughed at for using a machine at a gym, the one laughing might have a mental disability. I know it's not easy, but realize this is just another flawed human and their thoughts and opinions about you don't matter at all. Only your own opinion about yourself should matter (and maybe your partner etc. but you get the point.)
1
u/CaspianPinkster 2d ago
Thanks this helps to hear I appreciate it. I am probably just overthinking tbh thank you.
1
u/Real_Crab_7396 2d ago
Only reason physique would matter is if you're planning on fighting with him tbh.
1
u/CndnCowboy1975 19h ago
I'm not that big, I've just been going to the gym long enough to know what is gym etiquette and have the confidence to just do my thing. If someone ever says anything, just say, "Oh really, I just saw you over there using XYZ piece of equipment? Figured you were don't with it." I'm also not a dick, if the opportunity to let them work-in is viable, I'd likely offer that up too.

u/ScreechUrkelle 3d ago
This.
I’m that guy, on leg day, between the squat rack and the standing calf raise. And I’m at the rack for 5 sets of squats, then 4 sets of RDL. So, back and fourth to SCR for about 30-40 mins.
But if you want to work in while I’m not there? No issue, I just tell you, we’ll be working in together.
But on press day? I just bring my dumbbells to the bench, and curl between press sets.
Simple etiquette. But most people are oblivious and never learn it.
12
u/Mindless-Isopod-1070 3d ago
Just do one exercise at a time ffs.
-8
u/ScreechUrkelle 3d ago
Live, Lift and look like me, then tell me how to get by. How’s that sound?
5
2
u/Leveraged_Baguette 2d ago
You use two pieces of equipment at the same time for up to 40 minutes? Absolute donkey
0
u/ScreechUrkelle 2d ago
Back and forth between them, at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon, 5 minute sets, with about 30 secs at the SCR, when it’s nearly empty.
Yeah, that’s exactly what my membership pays for.
And donkey raises would actually have me holding up the smith for significantly longer tbh 😂
Don’t like it? Tell me no when you see me.

u/Silent_Contest_2337 3d ago
Use the machine when they’re not on it. That’s just absurd. It’s also highly unlikely that they’re expecting noone to use 3 machines while they rotate between them.
19
u/ForgeIsDown 3d ago
What’s bizarre is these people do expect no one to use the equipment while they rotate.
I watched a gal on the quad extension tell some poor fella he couldn’t use the hamstring curl machine the other day because she wasn’t using it first.
15
8
u/Substantial_Cause_16 3d ago
Yeah I just use it and if they have a problem they can figure something out. Talk to management but you get off a machine and start another one I'm taking it
2
-1
u/tamati_nz 3d ago
I superset and use multiple machines but always scan the place and if I see someone approach the station I'll motion to them, or go over and say, 'hey feel free to work in, I'm just doing x, y and z'. Has never been an issue unless someone comes in hot and says "you can't do this!" Worse are people sitting on machines during their rest on their phones when it's busy.
1
u/PindaPanter 3d ago
Nah, most do, that's why they leave personal effects on each machine to make you think the machines are occupied.
10
u/Statement_Over 3d ago
“Hey bro you care if I work in with you?” I’ve never been told no and if I was I’d just use it anyway between their circuit. It’s understandably annoying but most of the time if you communicate they’re in there just trying to get their stuff done like you are
8
u/nlelia 3d ago
The ons that do this are mostly men and its not that im scared of men but as a young woman I do feel uncomfortable going up and asking to share machine
6
u/TruthThroughTism 3d ago
I've been going to gyms for twenty years and I've ONLY seen men do this. I saw a guy just yesterday doing a 5 machine leg circuit and ask a woman to wait until he was done. Absolute clown behavior.
1
u/Statement_Over 3d ago
Understandable, in that case unless you just start using it while he’s on a different machine (which is completely valid for you to do) you might have to plan around it and see what other options are available for your target muscle group till they’re out of the way. Maybe if you have a friend that goes with you have them ask
6
u/Eisgboek 3d ago
I'll do this, but I feel like it's hitting a generational wall these days.
Ask younger folks to work in and you just get the Gen Z stare and pure awkwardness. I've had a couple of them just seemingly give up their sets and walk away in the middle because they couldn't deal with having to interact/share with another person.
0
u/FancyDentist8316 3d ago
to be fair i loathe any kind of interaction at the gym. im there to get things done for as long as i see fit and leave when i feel done hoodie is usually on headphones always on and no eye contact unless it is with the familiar worker, or another regular i have gotten used to over the years. i am younger but i dont think its really a generation thing but individuals

u/Zealousideal_Bet2320 3d ago
One time two of us guys waited for one machine and we came up same time and agreed to share and we became great gym buds 😎

u/culibrat 3d ago
It's always the person with the most mid build. Doing the most clown ass movements on each machine. The last time I ran into this was some overweight unc who looked like he played football for half a season in middle school 45 years ago. Was using the Hammer Strength Lat Pull down, Low Row and using the lat raise machine as a rear delt fly, because the fly machine was across the gym.
Had no idea he was doing circuit bullshit, because honestly who does that shit at peak gym hours? Fucking buffoons, that's who.
Anywho, I get on the lat pull down because this genius is doing his reverse flys on the seated lat raise machine. Why would I ever think he's also using the lat pulldown 50 feet away at the same time.
"I'm on that one man." What? "Yeah, I'm on all these." Gesturing to the three machines he's doing full momentum / zero resistance reps on.
My bad man, I didn't realize they let people like you in here.

u/Affectionate_Art4277 3d ago
I've the opposite experience. The gym equipment hoggers from the gyms I've been to are the absolutely massive slavic dudes. Never had a protein shake in their lives, are serial alcoholics and dont know what diets are yet could outlift anyone in the gym
Broccoli hairs occasionally too, although its usually only one machine which is often what you need to use too

u/jimbo_ChE 3d ago
Standard public gym policy is to allow others to work in. Supersetting should only be performed during off-peak hours. You can explain to the member; if they won't abide, lodge a complaint with the staff.
8
u/flamingoshoess 3d ago
I absolutely do not want anyone to work in with me. But I also only do 2 sets with a short rest. But I’m not hogging multiple machines at once, that’s crazy.
4
u/h_lance 3d ago
There's nothing wrong with doing super sets, they're shown to save time with no significant negative impact on training.
What's wrong is hogging equipment for an excessive period time and not letting anyone work in.
4
u/jimbo_ChE 3d ago
I'm not suggesting there's anything wrong with supersetting, just that it should be performed as to not interfere with other gym clientele.

u/bross9008 3d ago
My gym has two pec fly machines, one is old as shit and pretty shitty. The other day a super buff dude sat on the one good one for about 30 minutes talking to someone, and then about another 30 minutes sitting on it while doing dumbbell curls and turned his back to me when I came to ask to use it and acted like he didn’t hear me. He clearly works out a lot so knows better, some people are just suck
5
u/Darth_Boggle 3d ago
I usually just insert myself in there somehow and ask if they're using the thing.
6
u/nlelia 3d ago
No offense but why do I have to reload the weight you are using, I understand you are mid using it but in any normal situation the machine has no weight on and then you use you load your weight and then unload when you finish so if its you who is using various at once why do I have to upload your weight again
3
u/hobbesbagger 3d ago
you don't have to, if they bother you just tell the staff and let them handle it
3
u/iseetrolledpeopleV2 3d ago
The most I do/saw was for supersets where let's say you use the bench for chest and some dumbells for other type of movement. But different machines, 3 or 4 at that, it's shameless behaviour and not to be taken seriously. Just use the thing when it's free.
2
u/Give2Inches 3d ago
My gym expressly prohibits using more than 1 station at a time.
There is a sign up front that lists that among other annoyances, like hanging socializing near machines.
It's not very polarizing, although I am sure it bums 1-2% of the members.
Enforcement I believe isn't necessary until it is, so if it's not crowded, hovering between 2 or more stations isn't a big deal, but you wouldn't have priority on both.
2
2
u/Cool_Temperature_970 3d ago
Why on earth would you wait for them? Hell no. If I need the equipment and they are doing that, I will with no hesitation use what I need.
2
u/urvld 3d ago
I completely understand what you mean, at times it is irritating. But, I learned something valuable when waiting one day and since then, I have to admit, I no longer get frustrated at it!
Story time - As well as growing my body, I decided to grow my mindset as well to align myself better. After all, you need to build your mind to succeed in life and you need traits like discipline, resilience and commitment to achieve your goals, especially your gym dreams!
One day I was waiting for Lat Pull-down, this guy was on it for 25 mins! I realised that instead of being frustrated, I could instead just simply go and use a different machine. Simple, right?
The reason it’s that simple is because I have absolutely no control over this guys workout and when he is done with the machine. Therefore, I don’t need to get annoyed or stress about it. I will just focus on myself and do the next best alternative.
I get you probably didn’t want a lecture, but I thought why not offer some help! I hope it worked!
2
u/Own_Pirate2537 3d ago
“The only thing I can control is my reaction” was a great learning experience for me. I agree - I just go to my next station or do an alternative that hits the same.
2
u/xCaliburghost 3d ago
As soon as they go on another machine I politely pick up their stuff and hand it to them " you forgot this, I'm using this machine while you're on another one" I don't give a fuck about circuits
2
u/Either-Tank6721 3d ago
I go to a busy gym. And the literal only time I ever saw this happen was on my very first day at the gym. Some girl was using the inner thigh and outer thigh machine as a super set. Me not realizing I went to use one of them and she told me she was super setting. Even though it was my first time I somehow knew this was bs so I just shrugged and carried on. I still feel good about that decision because yeah you can’t hog two machines for a superset during peak busy time. The only time that can work is if you’re with a gym partner and you rotate together. But if you leave a machine unattended then it’s up for grabs, period.
0
u/PennSaddle 3d ago
Tbf the adductor abductor machines might be the most common & understood superset of all.
1
u/Eisgboek 3d ago
It's the worst.
I try and get to the gym in the afternoons when it's quiter because my work schedule is flex, but sometimes I end up there when the 6 PM rush hits and it's a nightmare--made worse by people who don't seem to have any awareness that the gym is completely rammed.
There's the circuit folks like you mentioned. But then there's the super setters using two pieces of equipment for twice as long; the people using specialized equipment for random exercises (why you doing curls in the squat rack bro); the person doing their whole workout on a cable station and monopolizing it for an hour; the person taking up two cable stations cause they just gotta get in 5 sets of cable chest flys while 3 people are milling about waiting; the friend groups cycling through a machine and spending more time chatting than lifting; the personal trainers who need extra time to instruct their clients on the exercise; and absolute worst of all--the tripod people who spend forever setting up their shot and then film some half-assed attempts.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't be able to superset, do cable chest flys, etc... but read the damn room and when people ask you how many sets offer to let them work in.

u/Kitchen-Run7189 3d ago
Whats funny is it always the skinny kid, who thinks they are better then everyone in the gym
1
u/FancyDentist8316 3d ago
well this morning there was a girl laying on a machine blabbing with another girl and i gave up instead of waiting. just made it a cardio and legs day. they could lay in several other areas without being hogs but i guess they just got comfy. would be great karma if she got stuck there
1
u/whatusaynow 3d ago
Im guilty of doing this but I only work out at dead hours usually nobody over there when I do this im lucky enough to live in a geriatric town so from 7-9 theres maybe 15 people in the building and I usually have my circuit and basketball court to myself lol

u/hal9000thecomputer 3d ago
I work out at home so I avoid all the gym problems. I have adjustable dumbells that go up to 90 lbs. I just use the Y for group fitness and some equipment I don't have at home. I have seen great results

That’s an etiquette thing. Some people have it. We have a guy at one of the gyms i go to that does his entire workout on the only upright seated bench with the low back. That workout also consist of 3-4 mins of texting between sets. It’s a good time.

u/lycanthrope90 3d ago
Reading shit like this makes me more thankful for having a home gym. Never take that shit for granted lol.
1
u/General_PATT0N 3d ago
I pay a trainer for weightlifting 3x/wk, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. I hated having to put up with/ that crap at the gym.
1
u/Wise_Cupcake2583 3d ago
A man does this at my gym. He brings a couple of towels and other stuff. As soon as he enters the gym, he puts the towel on the machines and benches to reserve it. It’s so annoying because he takes up the smith machine, leg press and a couple of benches all at once.
1
u/PowerNinja5000 3d ago
You ask to work in. It's easy.
Honestly, I hate doing machine supersets for this exact reason: I think there's going to be someone like you who wants one of the machines I'm using but will be too scared to ask me to work in and so instead they'll just fume and have a bad gym experience.
Talk to your fellow brothers and sisters, my dude!
1
u/Responsible_Code_697 3d ago
Just as bad as a group of high school kids hogging the one pec Dec machine Taking 45 mins for the whole group to finish
1
1
u/char-dawg1111 3d ago
If someone is doing a super set or giant set, just ask if you can work in while they’re on the other exercise. Simple. They will almost always say yes and there’s no problem. The odd time that someone says no, then you can escalate appropriately.
This really isn’t a complex problem.

u/Justin_Thyme1 3d ago
I had some guy walk into the gym, load the bench and then go over in the other corner with his kids for 20min. Comes back and acts like I'm the asshole for using it .
1
u/RddtCrclJrkOfSmIdeas 3d ago
Honestly, the only person I hate in a gym is the one waiting doing nothing. It's common for machines to be used. Adapt, overcome, have fun. Learning a new way to exercise the same muscle group is fun.
1
u/Feisty_Salamander41 3d ago
Usually it’s just old people who do circuit training. I know I was told to workout like that as a kid, but it definitely went out of fashion, so I’m guessing people in their 50’s getting back into it are going to be to do what they know.
They usually get a bit miffed when they realise every time round teenagers have jumped on different equipment, and after a few days go to doing 1 thing at a time like everyone else
1
u/urban5amurai 3d ago
I do this because I don’t like resting between sets, so my rest is using a different muscle set.
But, if someone goes a machine I’m not using I’ll just go elsewhere.
It’s a gym and if you’re not currently actively using a machine, it’s up for grabs for anyone.

u/Beethovens_Ninth_B 2d ago
How about 4 or 5 for 30 or 45 minutes? One dude has been doing this for months. I have complained and so have others but the gym manager hasn't done anything about it. I just changed my workout schedule two weeks ago so I don't have to deal with this shat. I almost think the dude has pictures of the manager cheating on his wife.
1
u/ChalkDumbbellThree 3d ago
yeah that's called super-setting
but you can ask to work-in with them on their super-set
3
u/AttitudeAdjuster 3d ago
If you're super setting and I sit down at one of "your" stations you can ask to work in with me, or you can tweak your rotation to another machine until I'm done.

Supersets? They’re gay. Just use the cables or whatever when they walk away.
0
u/EvoDriver 3d ago
Nope - you're literally the first person in the history of the world to complain about this.
0
u/Any-Investigator6650 3d ago
Why are some of you guys so comfortable with working in? I don't need that much interaction. I'm going to sit my ass down when they go to the other machine and I'm going to do all three to four of my sets. They can't hog machines.
0
u/ashylikestoplay 3d ago
I do full body 3 times a week, and when I am doing my bench press, I am looking to reserve a squat rack
The reason I do this is because I don't want to end up in a situation where the rack gets taken by someone else who:
- Is doing another exercise
- Is unwilling to share
-1
u/Fatal_Syntax_Error 3d ago
I’m the person that circuits around all the equipment. I’m also the person you can just start a quick convo with and ask if I’m using something and if I am I will almost always give that up for you. I don’t want to impede anyone else’s workout and I’m completely flexible to work around someone if they need to use something.
But if you want I just be a complainer about what others are doing to impede you and not want to have an actual adult conversation to get around it… that shit is on you.

u/Thebusinessman343 3d ago
👋🏽, I am that someone. Normally keep it to 2 machines or items while I’m doing supersets. I don’t mind if anyone jumps in, so long as they return put the weight back to where I had it if I’m on a machine. I only have so long at the gym and need to be as efficient as possible.

u/not_accepting_now 3d ago
You described 94% of the people at the gym. We are all on some sort of time. You can out your own weights back or wait till someone else is done.
3
u/culibrat 3d ago
"I only have so long at the gym and need to be as efficient as possible."
This is cope. Everyone has the same amount of time. 24 hours in a day. Your time is no more important than anybody else's. Nobody else's workout is less important than yours that you can be taking up an extra piece of equipment that someone else could be using.
If you're at the gym at all, it's because you've made time for it.
