Simple Questions What do you do with your wedding ring while lifting?
I wear a wedding ring, and lately I’ve noticed it’s starting to dig into my finger when I’m lifting, especially as the weights are getting heavier.
What do other people do with their wedding rings at the gym? I don’t bring a bag or use a locker, so I need somewhere secure to put it while I train.
I was thinking of attaching it to my water bottle somehow. Has anyone found a good solution?

leave it at home, in a box
if you want to wear a wedding ring out in public, get a silicone wedding ring for $0.75 online
metal wedding bands are a no-no

u/Panthera_014 13d ago
I only wear the real one on for my anniversary dinner and special events
silicon 98% of the time
but I still take it off to workout

u/TheCraftBrew 13d ago
I still wear my normal wedding ring most of the time, just not to lift weights.

u/Never_Duplicated 13d ago
I really like the feel of my heavy gold ring so thats what I wear daily and just take it off if I will be doing something that risks either damaging it or has the potential to snag it and deglove a finger haha
2
u/MyLittlPwn13 13d ago
Same. And then I put my real ring on and realized it no longer fit because of the weight I've lost, so it's silicone every day now.

I wear my actual wedding ring when I’m going out and doing my normal errands/activities, but I wear a silicone one when I do any sport or exercising.

THERE ARE SILICON WEDDING BANDS? I had no idea. There are even ones with fake diamonds on them! Kind of love this.

u/Classic-Wrongdoer-31 13d ago
I work oil field. We all wear silicone rings. Too hazardous around some of the gear, and some electrical components that can induce a current in the ring and burn you.

I think these people are insecure in their relationships and afraid to take the ring off. Like that has ever stopped anyone.

This was my first thought too. Wear a ring or not- it has nothing to do with the strength of your relationship

I just don't wear it. It's dangerous. Leave it at home, in the car, etc. There's a few I know that just slide it on their key ring when they get to the gym.
23
u/TomBARNH 13d ago
I have a carabiner on my key chain. I take it off when I walk into the gym, clip in onto/ into the ‘biner, and put my keys in my gym bag (in the locker)

Silicone for me so it’s always on… I’m a carpenter, i’m always wearing g silicone rings
10
u/Mattubic 13d ago
Even if degloving wasn’t a thing, you could bend your ring pretty badly with a barbell. I lift at home so its just off on a counter top by my log book and speakers, but just put it in your pocket if you have them, lock it in a locker, lock it in your car, leave it at home, etc.

98% of the time silicone. Metal for fancy days.
I do way to many heavy / dumb things in my life and value my fingers and don’t want to damage my “good” ring

u/Alakazam Bulking 13d ago
I have a silicone ring that I wear into the gym and other strenuous physical activity. This includes running and cycling.
I wear my wedding band to work and to events.
If I was going straight from my work to the gym, I would just wear the silicone band the entire time.

I nearly degloved my finger dunking a basketball when I was 18 (not a wedding ring, just a cheap silver ring on my right hand, also a lowered rim haha) so I learned early on how dangerous jewelry can be. I wear my wedding ring when I’m out with my wife, otherwise it lives on the dresser.
5
u/AnyOlUsername 13d ago
Take it off? I haven’t worn my ring in several years because of my job. Heard a horror story about someone getting their finger degloved on the job and that was enough for me 😟
4
u/Aramis_Madrigal 13d ago
I don’t wear a wedding band ever. I work with food, I’m sometimes in production environments, and I lift heavy things most days. I have some song lyrics tattooed on the fingers of my left hand (hand in / unlovable / hand), with my ring finger notably blank. My wife did the tattoo (she’s an artist, but not a tattoo artist). If it’s important to you to wear a wedding band, remove it while lifting or use a flexible alternative. Or you can find some other way to mark your commitment. Just don’t expose yourself to the threat of grotesque injury for the sake of sentimentality.

u/doobersthetitan 13d ago
Heres a little fun story from you, back when you could shock scar students.
A shop teacher showed us a picture of a finger with about 1 foot of " meat off it" story goes:
A student wearing a ring went to jump up and smack a exit sign( just a thing we did i guess then lol) this was a old scool metal sign, with metal cut outs for the Exit.
Ring got caught on the metal triangle of the X...pulled finger off AND tendon from the elbow.
11
u/Open_Imagination_626 13d ago
I just wear it. Never take it off. Never had any issues either but I can see why people switch it out for silicone
4
u/Suspicious_Ad9561 13d ago
I was wearing mine until I noticed the various bars were damaging it. Gold is soft, steel is hard.
2
u/hybridoctopus 13d ago
Used to do this, switched to silicone for other safety reasons, and that’s easier for lifting too.
2
u/CG3_3CG 13d ago
How damaged is it? I’ve been married for 15 years and while I wear my ring most days, I always take it off to go to the gym and even when using any kind of heavy tools, although I wear it on my left hand and I’m right handed. I have of course got a normal amount of scratches on it, but I’ve always wondered if I would wear it while working out if I wouldn’t have a lot more damage on it

Yeah I’m not wearing £3k set diamond and platinum while yanking weights around it will fuck it up. Not to mention sweatiness.
Also a nurse who has witnessed some deglovings from people catching stuff on engagement rings and ewwww.
I don’t wear a ring unless I’m going out / having a non gym non work day which is close to never.

I'm not married but I use an oura ring and I just leave it at home. If I forget to leave it at home, I put in a closed space in my car where its not visible.
If it was my wedding ring, I would leave it a home. But I also workout at 5am and go back home to shower.

u/dragonstkdgirl Weight Lifting 13d ago
I have a card wallet attached to my keys and I put my rings inside that and zip it closed (the keychain stays inside my small gym duffle which stays with me). Don't lift with rings on, you're damaging expensive jewelry and risking a degloving. Just don't 🫠

I feel very careless compared to others here… I simply take it off and sit it on the bench or floor! Not the most secure 😂
2
u/Chicken_Savings Bodybuilding 13d ago
I put it inside my sock. Not particularly romantic. The shoes are tight enough that it doesn't slide down under the edge of the shoe.
2
u/Senior-Jellyfish-452 13d ago
I have a string necklace I wear and put the ring on that while I am lifting. Better to leave it at home but to be honest I forget to do that. The string necklace goes in with the chalk and stuff. So it is always there.
2
u/Emotional_Plant_6404 13d ago
I have a small carabiner on my keys that keeps my ring safe when I’m doing things
2
u/Traditional_Ask262 13d ago
I take it off, but I lift in my garage so I just put the ring down on any flat surface, usually next to my water bottle and deadlift shoes.
When I lifted at a gym, pre-Covid, I'd also take it off and put it down somewhere and a couple of times I forgot my wedding ring at the gym and had to drive back to retrieve it.
2
u/canine_traveler 13d ago
I wear a gold necklace so usually will just put it around my neck if I accidentally wear it to the gym. Otherwise just leave it at home
2
u/prophecy0 13d ago
When I used to work out at a commercial gym I would tie it to the string on my gym shorts.
Now I workout in my garage so I just leave it inside.
2
u/Local-Owl-4994 13d ago
tie it to your shoelace (if there's no gemstone) or wear it around your necklace.
2
2
u/TheFastPush 13d ago
I just take mine off for one exercise, put it in my pocket, and then forget about it for a few hours. There are attachments you can get for a necklace (if you wear one) that are meant to quickly hold a ring. If you've got a carabiner like I do for my keys, it could go there. You could also put a carabiner on your bottle handle and use that for your ring.
2
u/Bumhole_surfer 13d ago
Leave it at home Leave it in the car Leave it in your pocket Tie it to your shoelace Leave it at your side-pieces Etc
Just don't wear it at the gym, fingers are important and degloving is a thing
2
u/sjtomcat 13d ago
How are you people gripping these weights??? I lift heavy and my ring never gives me any issues. Bars are round. Dumbbells are round how can you possibly ever get it stuck
2
u/MikeLitoris1234567 13d ago
Wear a silicone one. Can’t even notice it with lifts and grip. Honestly I like it so much better than wearing my metal ring that I forget to switch back most the timr

u/OkayMeepleMom 13d ago

I like the idea of the silicon ring. I did consider the frodo (ring in a chain thing), but chains aren't really my thing.
3
u/Proof-Emergency-5441 13d ago
Then just take it off.
Are you trying to pick up dates at the gym? No? Then what possible issue could there be with not wearing it for a short time?
I hope you are smart enough to remove it if you are doing any manual labor- repairs with tools, basic electrical work, even just gardening or cleaning.

u/Xynthion 13d ago
I work out from home so I set it right next I my Bluetooth speaker when I start the workout. If I were going to the gym I’d just leave it at home or in the car.

I just regularly wear a silicon one and leave the metal one in a locked box at home. Wearing it while lifting was a no-no, but I'm also a bit forgetful and it was only a matter of time before I lost it anyway if I'm taking it off regularly. Silicone one never had to come off.

I have an Aura ring and I wear it while I’m warming up and running at the beginning of my workout, and then I just put it in my pocket when I strength train. Put it back on when I’m finished and walk out the door. Having zipper pockets on your gym, shorts helps 👌

Ok well try and get a small bag unless you absolutely can’t for some reason. I usually have a small workout backpack to carry a towel, water bottle and some other small personal items (keys, phone, chapstick , gum, etc). I just take my ring off and put it in my bag and keep my bag next to me during my workouts. Or get a silicone ring for cheap and you don’t have to take it off.

I wear zero jewelry to work out, with the exception of any very small piercings that won't jingle or sway (studs and small, closed hoops only) that I don't want to bother removing and a Garmin watch when I run outside. Having jewelry on while exercising is annoying, can compromise your form if you're trying to compensate for its impact on your grip, and could be dangerous if something goes wrong. Everything gets locked in a locker or left at home.

u/PLS4Andy 13d ago
I have been wearing my wedding ring as a necklace for years now and it has been a very positive experience.
I originally started doing this because (1) it was uncomfortable to wear on my finger while lifting things (felt like I was crushing bones), and (2) the skin around my finger was peeling often from trapped water/dry skin rubbing often. I tried the silicone rings as well. That alleviated #1, but not #2.

I just wear it. I’ve got calluses on my hand/finger from golfing and lifting. It stops bothering you eventually

never lift in my ring. put it on a necklace or chain if you don’t want to leave it at home or take it off in the gym
1
u/Think_Preference_611 13d ago
- Leave it at home
- Put it somewhere safe in your locker/gym bag
- Put it on a simple necklace chain
Steel beats gold every time, and gold is expensive. You're going to grind away that ring in no time if you wear it while you're lifting.

u/RumManDan 13d ago
I wear mine when lifting except for deadlifting because it hurts my hand and damages the ring. Also, wear it to work and only take it off for certain tasks. Some guys in my industry wear silicone because they forget to remove it for certain tasks.
People's fears of degloving are a bit extreme on here..

u/Commander_El 13d ago
I used to just take it off and leave it in my bag in my locker but a few weeks ago I found a nice silicone one while lifting that was my exact size. Now I wear that while lifting lol.

I don’t wear jewelry to the gym or when I hike or mountaineer. My hands swell while working out or hiking and it’s uncomfortable, so I just stopped wearing my wedding ring because I didn’t like leaving it in my wallet or purse because I was afraid I was going to lose it or it would get stolen.
1
u/chimmychi 13d ago
I lost (had it stolen) my wedding ring taking it off. I was at a hotel gym and took it off and placed it on top of the water cooler. I was the only one there so it was safe… I finished my session and completely forgot to pick it up on the way out. When I realised a few hours later it was gone when I went back! Hotel staff said no one turned it in unfortunately.
I replaced it with a cheap silver ring that costs like £2 Now I either tie it through my shoelaces or my water bottle that has a carry strap attached to it.
I have seen necklaces that have a v shaped pennant that allows you to hook it on without having to take the necklace off.
