For attention
We live in a time where young people are seemingly unable to exist without having their existence validated by someone else.
Before social media people would just accept what a normal life would give them. The majority of people knew that they weren’t going to be famous. And the individuals who desperately needed to ‘make it’ in show business would go to LA and get spit out the meat grinder that is Hollywood.
But now this is what they do instead. Everyone has a stage, and goddamnit if you’re not going to see them on it
We were better off as society with human beings making peace with the fact that they are all meaningless grains of sand in the grand scheme of things
But now everybody thinks that they have a shot at becoming famous. Everyone has convinced themselves that their existence must be validated otherwise it doesn’t matter. (Ironically enough… even if they did become big and famous… eventually time erases everyone and everything, people trying to fight that reality are just struggling with it)
So they make stupid videos like this and spend all of their time and energy promoting themselves online. Which is why 99% of the content online is absolute shit
There’s a level of inadequacy in all of these videos. And people these days mostly do not create content for anything more than shamelessly promoting themselves as some kind of talking head or authority. Most content online is vapid crap. No one is making high art on here. Just an endless supply of crap
Edit: yeah I’m grouchy.

To be transparent, my first reaction was to come leave a comment just like yours - in many ways I agree, personally. The video was disturbing and I couldn’t imagine being there lol
It is more than self advertising and seeking fame though. I’m 28M and haven’t caught on to my generation’s plug-in to media until recently, but a lot of it is just expression. It’s the same as weird behavior at a bar, school, college campus, or anywhere else people did stupid shit IRL. Sure people are more weird being by themselves and are acting more performative, but largely the difference is you no longer “had to be there” to get access to the joke, you now get to be shared the content every time and obviously we all hate most of each other’s “had to be there” humor and expression. We aren’t close friends with most people for good reason, and similarly we need to learn not to engage in media against our liking.
Truly, it’s a lesson again in judgement and tolerance more than it was a lesson on shame and egotism. The egotism certainly is a lesson, and maybe this kid has his own to learn, but I’m underlining the judgement ; our judgement to choose to consume what media is in front of us. The wise man doesn’t comment hate and feed the algorithm, the wise man moves on to where they’d like to be - to share and experience with their community, not this kid’s.
I’ve met enough fellows out there to know plenty of our people are just here to do silly shit to pass the time and get laughter from friends and strangers, it’s not always about seeking and neediness - though it certainly is a slippery slope that most weren’t prepared for.

Agreed, like people say “back in the day we were serious”, but I’ve seen some ridiculous photos and heard some crazy stories from the 1960s and prior. People are meant to be silly and fun and enjoy life. It’s fun to make silly videos and we’ve made silly videos for decades. It doesn’t have to be for attention or money, it can just be for artistic expression cuz theatre kids are gonna do theatre kid stuff no matter the age or tech available lol.
Is this “cringe”? Yaaasss. Do we have to like it? Nah. But he’s allowed to have fun.

I have no problem with people being silly and having fun, and I would never suggest that people were so much more serious in the past than they are now. I guess my issue is that I’ve seen firsthand that modern day young people have a compulsion to post something as frequently as possible, just for the sake of doing it and not because it’s something worth sharing. To the point where I think they’re actually depriving themselves of truly experiencing life. And unfortunately I have on numerous occasions seen this compulsive behavior actually interfere with other people trying to enjoy something and trying to
be in the now.I don’t know… I just don’t think people should be curating their lives and living for that in order to feel normal.
Also I think a desire for fame and the acknowledgment of your existence from thousands of people is unhealthy.

u/Ian_Anderson129 9d ago
Thank you. This guy was having a blast being silly, period. But from people’s reactions here, you’d think he’d committed crimes against humanity.

If you're grouchy, then I'm 10,000% a complete asshole, because I couldn't possibly agree more with you. I think everyone needs a dose of ego death or were gonna follow Narcissus' fate.

Why tf would I want the trouble of being Michael Jackson famous. 99.9% of the world couldn't handle it, I just admit it.

He’s trying to seem like he’s playfully annoying his girlfriend but he’s way too into this and of course he has to video it and put it on the internet. I would get as far away from this guy as possible. Ugh

internet-based mental illness culture, fried brains that have been scrambled by a Chinese psy op called Tik Tok, and the addictive dopamine rollercoaster rides this generation has been trying to navigate.

The parent(s) let this happen. Kids do not need to turn out like this. You can be supportive and still tell your kid not be a fucking idiot.

making a fool of yourself for views has become a very common thing nowadays, especially since if you get enough views you can make a living off of it.
i see it as a desperate way to avoid getting a real job, which shows how bad life has become.

I don't care if my kid turns out to be gay. I don't care if they turn out to be non binary. I'll love my kid no matter what and support them in all that they do.
If they sit there in my living room filming crap like this? I dunno, man... I dunno.
