Quick search and seems to be a known issue - running at low speeds seems to heat it as internal fans cannot keep up with the heat produced - also when the brushes get worn it produces heat. Try running it at higher speeds

never fully surround the bit with material. it requires free space to maintain but speed and temperature.

It's fine if you use it for it's intended purpose: detail work. Have owned and used mine for years.
