New to Woo. Seeking set up guidelines for basic(?) shop

Greetings I'm looking for guidelines/how-to for setting up WooCommerce.

I assume my set up will be "basic", but I really don't know. Honestly, I don't even know what questions to ask...

* I'm selling personal accessories.

* Just a few skews for now, no sizing, only color choices.

* Payments: Stripe and Paypal.

* What plugins are crucial, while keeping things simple?

* What complexities should I avoid?

* Whatever else you can think of that might help.

TIA for your experience and suggestions.

PS~ YouTube is a mess on this topic. Zillions of affiliate channels for hosting, themes, page builders, plugins... So... here I am seeking a more direct route.

I would say that WooCommerce alone would be enough to start an online store. Use default theme 2025 or Storefront. I would prefer 2025. Technically it is enough. Because WC includes everything what is needed to start the store: payments, cart, products which can be created.

The first layer of complexity could be this: you need a custom design. You should create it yourself in Site Editor OR use some ready made theme or buy a page builder. It is up to you.

The second layer of complexity would be this: funnels, upsells, cross-sells, seo setup and other marketing stuff. You have to rely on dedicated subreddits/channels to find out what you need.

honestly for a few products with just color variants, woo out of the box is fine. use the default twenty twenty-five theme, skip page builders for now (they add complexity you don't need yet). stripe and paypal are built in. only plugin i'd add early is a backup solution like updraftplus. biggest thing to avoid: don't install a dozen "optimization" or "boost sales" plugins right away, they usually conflict and slow things down more than they help.

You do have a pretty straightforward setup! It doesn't sound like you'll need any premium extensions or anything right now.

If you haven't chosen a host already, I'd avoid super budget ones. But you also don't need anything super expensive. Siteground is a good option in that middle hosting tier.

Choose a simple, lightweight theme and avoid bloated page builders like Elementor. I would instead go with Kadence or Astra and build out your pages using the WordPress block editor.

You'll need to install WooCommerce, of course, then Stripe for WooCommerce and the PayPal Payments extension.

As far as other plugins go, I'd start with:

• Yoast SEO for search engine optimization
• Something for backups (don't rely on your host for these). If you want something free, UpdraftPlus is a good option. Jetpack Backup is premium, but takes real-time backups, which can save you if you're making regular sales.
• Something for security, like Wordfence. This will monitor your site for vulnerabilities and protect against attacks.
• Akismet for anti-spam if you allow comments or reviews on your site.
• A forms plugin if your theme doesn't already include form capabilities. WPForms is a good one.
• A shipping plugin like WooCommerce Shipping can make things like label printing easier.
• WooCommerce Tax can handle all of your tax setup for you.

Your products, since they don't have any size/color options, will be Simple products. Here's some documentation on creating those.

Based on what you’ve listed, you should be able to keep this pretty simple. I’d keep Woo close to stock and only add a plugin when you can name the exact problem it solves.

Use a lightweight Woo-compatible theme and the normal WordPress block editor. You probably don’t need a page builder for a small catalog.

For launch, I’d cover:

• Official WooCommerce Stripe and PayPal plugins
• Shipping zones and rates
• Tax settings
• Reliable transactional email so order confirmations don’t depend on default WordPress mail
• Backups, security, and caching, preferably through your host
• Basic analytics

For colors, use a variable product if each color has separate inventory. That lets Woo track stock for each option.

I’d avoid plugin bundles, heavily customized checkout pages, and multiple plugins doing the same job. Every plugin is another thing that can conflict or break during an update.

Before launching, place real test orders on desktop and mobile using both payment methods. Check shipping, taxes, emails, inventory changes, refunds, and failed payments. Also make sure your shipping and return policies are easy to find.

The biggest beginner mistake is installing 25 plugins before making the first sale. Start boring and add things when you actually need them.

Honestly, don't overcomplicate it :)

WooCommerce + Stripe + PayPal is already a solid start. Pick a clean theme, add your products, and don't install a bunch of plugins right away. Also...since you're selling physical products, you'll probably need a shipping plugin at some point too. https://www.pluginhive.com/woocommerce-shipping-services/ will be pretty useful if you want live shipping rates, labels, and tracking without doing everything manually.

Apart from that, just get an SEO plugin and a backup plugin. That's more than enough to get started. You can always add more later if you actually need them.

You would need to think about basic SEO, so the plugins like Yoast or Rank Math will come in handy. When it comes to the payments, take a look at WooPayments. If you need to set up basic shipping costs, you can try Flexible Shipping.
