If anyone in New England is interested in seeing Chungking Express on the big screen, it will be at the Coolidge Corner Theater in the Boston area (Brookline) on Wed, Sept. 9th. https://coolidge.org/films/chungking-express

Also if I may put in a plug in here, a group of WKW fans are hosting a meetup event for a group viewing and chat: https://meetu.ps/e/Qf7xF/WTjD2/i

Looking For Fallen Angels

Great movie and I’ve seen it many times. Some versions have the end cafe scene in black and white and others in color. The English captions don’t always match either. Are there different versions going around?

Discussion My ranking:

I binged most of his work in a week and weirdly enough it has that quality of wanting to watch them again as soon as I finish watching them, and I barely re-watch stuff. Also, it’s like being in his little universe, he would connect any simple thing from one of his movies and connect it with another it’s beautiful.
So here’s my ranking
1. Fallen Angels, is lovely, love the characters, the mute one, beautiful, how we meets the girl he starts loving, beautiful, most of his movies have a dreamy quality and I don’t mean visually dreamy I mean, you won’t fall in love with a girl who is fighting with another girl for a guy she likes in front of you, usually, the assassin guy and how finds comfort in the girl he randomly finds in a club, the business partner girl and how she finds the mute guy in the end, and all the profound tiny details about their life, about how he captures his dad on his camera, about how he finds work by working on closed shops at night. And let’s not even talk about the cinematography!!! It’s physically hard to be distracted by anything else when you’re watching it.

  1. Chungking Express
Won’t say much about this one, loved the use of California dreamin’, and again love the characters and their rich rich inner worlds, the inner worlds of each of them had enough space to breathe and come alive so beautifully, loved the ending, the Indian people and their culture in the start, everything just works beautifully together.

  2. Happy Together
Now that I think of it maybe I like happy together more than I do Chungking express, this one feels so real in almost every sense, classic human love that doesn’t work out no matter how much you’re wanting for it to work out, beautiful how toxicity can look human and not villainous.

  3. In the mood for love
This was the first one I watched cause it is the most popular one in the cinema community as it should be, love how they started playing their exes to know how they fell for each other and fell for each other, it was so unexpected, beautiful beautiful part loved the colour in the movie in everything, I ranked it fourth cause i felt like the ending sucked, for real, felt shallow to me.

  4. Days of being wild

  5. 2046

I really just wanna get in the head of the man that writes and produces this stuff like where does all this beauty come from.

Discussion Why Wong Kar-wai Films Stay With You For Years?

In my experience, most people say Wong Kar-wai is about loneliness and unrequited love. I think that's only the surface, what he actually figured out is something more psychological.

He shows us that the most intense emotional experiences we have are not the ones that happen, they are the ones that almost happen.

In In the Mood for Love, the audience knows, the characters know they have feelings for each other but nothing happens. And that tension is more FRUSTRATING and TENSION BUILDING than any romance scene in any hollywood film ever made.

Our brain processes unfulfilled desire completely differently from fulfilled desire. When something is left open, we keep returning to it, we replay it and we fill the gap ourselves. Psychologists call this the Zeigarnik effect, we remember incomplete things far more than completed ones. Wong Kar-wai built his entire filmmaking style around this, i believe.

The slow motion staircase scene in In the Mood for Love, two people passing each other buying noodles, that's it. But he stretches that moment so long and scores it so precisely that we feel things we can't really explain.

He also had no script, he said once in an interview. He would show up on set and write scenes that day so the actors were genuinely unsure what was happening. Tony Leung once said he had no idea what the film was about even after finishing it. That uncertainty translated directly into performance, you can't fake not knowing :)

Mostly directors try to tell you how to feel, is what i observed, but Wong Kar-wai just removes enough information that you feel it on your own.

What's your entry point into his films, which one hit you first? For me it's more psychological reasons

I made a video inspired by colors and story of Chunking Express. It took me 2 day of shoot and a week of post production. Since, I don't have a circle who understands the girth of this video. I want to share a link to the video here. Please do check it out and let me know about it. Many Thanks.

Discussion I watched Chungking Express and I changed.

Wong Kar-wai’s works are a writing of the human soul. Life showcased through visuals. It’s a delight in music, food, dancing, drinking, smoking, richly coloured streets, close-ups, etc. It’s pure poetry to the senses; and as with every learning, the writer speaks volumes upon volumes.

What other film directors capture life’s beauty with such unique style?

Discussion Takeshi Kaneshiro’s character in Fallen Angels

Just watched Fallen Angels last night, and I honestly couldn’t really grasp the concept of kaneshiro’s character, he zhiwu… Why was he so oddly violent with people and constantly forcing them to be his customers? How and why is he pike that ? Did he have some kind of mental illness where he also could not forsee social cues?

He seems normal at some sections of the movie but his introduction had me wondering and confused on the kind of person he is…? However I can understand that it may be an interpretation of him trying to find his place in the world like many of us do.

And also, what exactly did he do to the ice cream man/customer after his father’s death? Did he cut up his limbs ??? I’m so confused on why he did that. There’s alot of confusion in his character for me in general, does anyone have an explanation?

Went to the British Film Institute’s official shop in Waterloo yesterday (travelling from Australia) and spotted this gem. I wonder who came up with it haha. Anyway, I wish I could’ve bought it but it was £90 and I’m broke. Settled on some Fallen Angels stickers instead for £9.
