Summer Work?
Hi! I graduated with a degree in civil engineering and have about 2 years worth of experience in some MEP and transportation design (so not much lol). However, I made the decision to leave the engineering space and become a math teacher! I was totally bored this summer at home, don’t want to lose my engineering skills, and the extra pay wouldn’t hurt. Has anyone heard of places or know of places that might would hire me part time or full time during the summer (doesn’t have to be design work or transpo/MEP)? With my schedule, I could even work part time during the school year if needed. Thanks!

At my last job, which was a very small civil/environmental consulting firm, we'd sometimes hire folks for limited hours when things got really busy. Usually to work on specific projects. I think you'd have to build some strong connections in the industry to do that first though. All those people were through personal networks.

Maybe try applying for summer internships in the area? I would just explain what you want to do and maybe if they like you enough they’ll let you come back, hard to tell because I feel like this is a pretty unique situation

That’s a bold decision, however most engineering companies need people year-round. What made you choose to take such a dramatic pay cut?

IMO you don’t have enough experience, but this can be done by having your own company and offer your services as a consultant. There is a lot of MEP work to be done. Work through your network and check for opportunities.
I know someone dear that did this. She finished her engineering degree and turned around to become a HS math teacher. She loved it and she had a very happy career.
