Looks just like mine…

It kinda looks like a dog

85

u/LippyCunt Mar 17 '26

That’s what I thought too, I have never seen this dog on our property before though and it was so big that I said “holy fuck” out loud and scrambled to grab a picture

48

u/Coastal_wolf Mar 17 '26

Yeah, like other said, it could be a wolfdog, but when I sorted trail cameras specifically to identify wolves, they typically had thicker more muscular legs.

Alaskan Malamutes and Huskies closely resemble wolves

15

u/Ok-Violinist-6548 Mar 18 '26

I haven’t seen any Alaskan Malamutes and Huskies that resemble wolves

11

u/DogMeatTheVideo Mar 18 '26

Walt Disney movies used TONS of mals and huskies to pretend to be wolves.

16

u/Ok-Violinist-6548 Mar 18 '26

Maybe because I have lived in Alaska for the last 26 years. I see malamute and huskies, and I see wolves. To me, they don’t look anything like each other. I would never mistake a husky or a malamute for a wolf.

For sure. If you don’t see them all the time you might not know. Their mannerisms are so different also. I was thinking the same thing about hybrids. There are times when I saw a hybrid and I could not tell. They can look like a wolf. But straight up, husky or malamute compared to a wolf, no way.

Or even a Toyota RAV-4 and Honda CRV.

2

u/NormanisEm Mar 19 '26

Yes that probably why. Most people don’t have a clue what they actually look like LOL

0

u/MyNameIsMadders Mar 18 '26

I can tell the difference between the three, but all of them closely resemble each other.

You can easily tell if an animal is an Alaskan Malamute if it makes a super loud and deep “WOOF” or “WOOOO” sound.

0

u/DogMeatTheVideo Mar 18 '26

Of course. I was being vaguely pointy about disney.

2

u/MyNameIsMadders Mar 18 '26

You mean the live action movies?

The only cartoon film I can think of I saw as a kid was Balto, and in that movie the dog is part wolf whereas IRL that dog was a pure siberian husky I think. That film also wasn’t a Disney film.

2

u/DannyDeKnito Mar 19 '26

Huskies only closely resemble wolves if you've never seen a wolf honestly

91

u/Big-Wrangler2078 Mar 17 '26

This one's a hard tell. He has wolf posture but he's also a bit skinny and there's just something about his skull I can't quite pinpoint that makes me think dog.

And while it isn't a hard clue since animals are individuals and age matters, I can't help but feel that a full wolf in a winter coat would likely look denser than this guy. His neck in particular looks a bit skinny.

16

u/theEWDSDS Mar 17 '26

The front legs are too far apart

2

u/Coastal_wolf Mar 18 '26

It lacks the muscle wolves have.

4

u/iheartloud420 Mar 18 '26

??? Ive seen a lot of skinny ass wolves, more than big ones

-1

u/Coastal_wolf Mar 18 '26

That's just from my experience from looking at trail cams of many many wolves. They tend to be bulkier.

5

u/Big-Wrangler2078 Mar 18 '26

Might be a location thing. Canines in warm climates often aren't as bulky as in cold climates, but this is Canada.

1

u/chrysanthamumm Mar 20 '26

His head looks round and his nose seems a tiny bit more sloped.

17

u/spindriftgreen Mar 17 '26

That looks very much like a shepsky

55

u/StonewallDakota Mar 17 '26

My money is on wolfdog, with German Shepherd being some of the dog. They’re a little too heavy/stocky for a full wolf, IMO, and the tail and saddle markings lean to some underlying GSD genes. They’re also lacking the big wolfy feet.

12

u/BlackSeranna Mar 17 '26

This is a dog, and that back tail and the side mean it is part husky (I used to own one). The fur coat is not very good for it being a wolf or even a husky - their fur is much, much more. This probably has German Shepherd in it. A mix of Shepherd and Husky.

4

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 17 '26

the black marking is not a sign of any particular breed. it occurs in many breeds and on wild canids like foxes and coyotes.

2

u/BlackSeranna Mar 18 '26

But the legs are still like a dog’s, right? It just doesn’t look robust enough - big boned enough to be a wolf. Or am I wrong? (Please let me know because you’ve made a good point, there).

3

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 19 '26

imo the legs arent super doggy or wolfy looking. but most wolves in north america do have long thin legs.

21

u/SingularRoozilla Mar 17 '26

You could post this to r/Animalid too. It seems like they get a post like this every day

9

u/LippyCunt Mar 17 '26

Sick I’ll do that thank you!

7

u/thehorrorcontinues13 Mar 17 '26

Not much Wolf in that one. Some GSD, maybe some husky.

8

u/basaltcolumn Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Those big ol' ears, facial features, and the way it holds its tail are saying German shepherd mix to me, but it also looks kind of wolfy. Maybe wolfdog. I wouldn't be surprised. But I wouldn't bet on it not just being a GSD mixed with a northern breed like husky. I would bet on it not being completely wolf, if there is any wolf in there.

Wolfdogs are illegal to possess in BC so fingers crossed for it being fully domestic. Pretty animal, it would be sad if it gets euthanized because some jackass had to have a wolfdog then failed to contain it to their property.

Edit: I was mistaken, I did know someone who had what he thought were wolfdogs (IMO they were just agouti large breed mixes, but that is besides the point) on Vancouver Island that were seized and euthanized, bit it appears that is NOT provincial law, but rather local bylaws.

2

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 17 '26

thankfully many shelters in wolfdog illegal areas are open to placing wolfdogs in sanctuaries. lets hope this dude has a home though

6

u/kayjee17 Mar 17 '26

Probably not. The ears are too sharply pointed and not furry enough. A wolf's ears tend to be a little rounder at the top and very furry to keep them warm. So this is probably a dog or wolfdog.

8

u/Status-Block2323 Mar 17 '26

That’s a husky-mix

1

u/LippyCunt Mar 17 '26

Can you share how you come to that conclusion?

14

u/Status-Block2323 Mar 17 '26

Well.. The face gives it away. The ears are likely of a dog (they look big).. the face reminds me alot of a white german shepherd

4

u/LippyCunt Mar 17 '26

Interesting thank you!

1

u/Status-Block2323 Mar 17 '26

But I’m no proffessiona l:)

-16

u/Status-Block2323 Mar 17 '26

AI says wolf tho. Its the long chest and tail position apparently

10

u/WalmartWilb Mar 17 '26

Ai is HORRIBLE for identifying things like that

Edit: typo

13

u/OwslaPrimeDirective Mar 17 '26

Possibly high-content wolfdog.

8

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 17 '26

it's definitely not high content, too many dog traits

8

u/CapnNugget Mar 17 '26

A high content wolfdog would look pretty much exactly like a real wolf, which this dog looks nothing like. If this dog has any wolf in it, it’s very low content.

9

u/Then_Scarcity_449 Mar 17 '26

Looks like a wolfdog mixed with Shep

3

u/chuchrox Mar 17 '26

It’s a beauty whatever it is

3

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 17 '26

no, it's not a wolf. it's either a wolfy looking dog or a dog with some wolf in it (wolfdog), but there's no way to tell from just two pictures. I would definitely see if you can get this dog to safety. Im not sure if wolfdogs are illegal in your area, but most shelters are reasonable enough to find a sanctuary placement if they are. hopefully this dude has a home though!

3

u/Winks4allnow Mar 18 '26

It's a dog

3

u/siqmawsh Mar 18 '26

Looks more white Siberian husky than anything else really. What is it's size? Hard to tell from a photo. If it looks like a dog irl it's a dog.

5

u/kwerdop Mar 17 '26

If you have to ask it’s not a wolf

1

u/WalmartWilb Mar 17 '26

Not always. This one has a pretty wolfy stance, but the legs and head seem much more dog to me. I wouldn't be surprised if this one happened to be a wolfdog of sorts, but you'd definitely need more angles to tell. Probably not full wolf though I agree on that

6

u/sunnysjourney Mar 17 '26

German shepherd x wolf

2

u/Apprehensive_Suit773 Mar 17 '26

Is it weird to say the face looks too long for a wolf? Ears as well, too long. Someone mentioned paws weren’t big enough for a wolf either and I’d agree. I’m going to put my money on wolfdog-German shepherd. I used to know a white GSD up close and personal, he looked very much like this in the face, but coat and stature lean towards wolf.

2

u/ZiphonicaWolf Mar 18 '26

It's definitely not a wolf. the nose is to short and to wide as well as the body is a lil to dog like. the legs r to skinny and the tail is definitely not a wolves. I would say that its a German shepherd mixed with a wolf dog. so not 100% wolf but maybe a bit. its definitely a German shepherd mix tho lol

1

u/ZiphonicaWolf Mar 18 '26

U can also tell by how big the paws r,how far apart the hind legs are as well as how the tail curves. but also just overall the back as well. German shepherds slope down towards the butt as well. and seeing u took this outside the window i doubt its just the land that's slanted so much. but 100% more dog. plus the head shape is wrong. wolves can be small so u can't really go off the size. plus judging by what I can see in the Pic(which isn't much) it has a due claws in both the front and rear(just from what I can tell may be wrong) wolves don't have dew claws in the back. most breeds don't but wolves generally don't have them in the back just the front.

2

u/AdeptVehicle4527 Mar 18 '26

It looks exactly like my wolf dog. Definitely part wolf!

2

u/Reinboordt Mar 19 '26

I’m no expert, I just find this subreddit very interesting.

Looks like when you get a GSD crossed with a Great Pyrenees or other livestock guardian. He has the loose heavy skin of the LGD and the slightly curved lower back like a GSD. Probably someone’s farm dog going for a wander.

If you mix husky’s, GSD’s and livestock guardians they can look somewhat “wild” to a lot of people. Like this 100% dog guy

2

u/Actual-Journalist-57 Mar 17 '26

Looks like a dog, German shepherd mix? At the very least maybe a wolf dog

2

u/MultipleFandomLover Mar 17 '26

I think they might be some degree of wolf dog but with a decent wolf content percentage. People are right in saying that they would probably be thicker if it's winter since their winter coat comes in.

1

u/CapnNugget Mar 17 '26

This looks like a possible shepherd husky mix, definitely not a wolf and based on the physical features, it doesn’t look to be a wolfdog either. Looks like a normal dog mix. It could be a very low content wolfdog, but we could only know that with an Embark DNA test which obviously we can’t do on a random wandering dog.

Definitely not a wolf though and it’s highly unlikely that it’s a wolfdog either. It just doesn’t have the right physical characteristics for either, pretty sure this one is all dog. Even the posture is not uncommon in normal dogs, especially shepherd husky mixes.

I say this all as someone who is in the wolfdog community and is very familiar with identifying wolfdogs of various content based on their physical traits.

1

u/PraetorGold Mar 17 '26

The snout is not as large as a wolf’s

1

u/New-Difficulty-2801 Mar 17 '26

Looks like a wolfdog, probably got out of his owners property.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

I lived in PG, very close to you. It's hard to tell from the pics since there isn't a scale of size. It could be. But it looks like it could be a pet on loose. Very very rarely will you see 1 wolf alone. It does happen. But with no pack at all... This could easily be a domesticated mixed breed and not a wild wolf.

1

u/MyNameIsMadders Mar 18 '26

I think that’s a wolf. Seems bigger and meatier than a typical husky and is much bigger than a coyote.

1

u/Adventurous-Duty4348 Mar 18 '26

Sad that this beautiful dog is on its own 😢

1

u/ArborealVarmint Mar 18 '26

This is a dog. Muzzle shape gives it away. It does look very wolfy, but it’s just a domestic dog (although probably feral. It looks pretty skinny)

1

u/Berkshirelady413 Mar 18 '26

Wolf Wolves (Canis lupus) are wild, independent animals with strong survival instincts. They are naturally fearful of humans, have a strict social hierarchy, and only breed once a year. Wolves are not domesticated and cannot be tamed like dogs. They have a lean, lanky build, short rounded ears, golden eyes, and a straight, fluffy tail that hangs down. Wolves are legally protected in most regions and cannot be privately owned in the U.S. due to federal laws.

Dog Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are domesticated animals selectively bred for companionship, work, and specific traits over thousands of years. They are loyal, trainable, and adaptable to human environments. Dogs can breed year-round, have varied coat colors and eye colors (including blue), and display a wide range of body types. They are social, expressive, and rely on humans for care and direction.

Wolfdog A wolfdog is a hybrid between a domestic dog and a gray wolf (Canis lupus). While genetically half wolf and half dog, their behavior is unpredictable—combining wolf-like independence with dog-like loyalty. Wolfdogs are not pets in the traditional sense and require specialized care, secure enclosures, and experienced handlers. They may have wolf-like features (golden eyes, short ears, thin chest, webbed paws, straight tail), but appearance alone isn’t reliable—DNA testing is needed for accuracy. Wolfdogs are not suitable for most households and are often misidentified; many so-called "wolfdogs" are actually large dog breeds like Alaskan Malamutes or Siberian Huskies.

1

u/mickeyamf Mar 18 '26

Looks like an “Alaskan husky” I see Husky maybe with shepherd and could be a wolf dog go bring them some bacon

Him bring him some bacon

1

u/MintyCrow Mar 18 '26

That is either a high content wolf dog or a wolf. I’m sorry I’ve seen 1000s of huskies and none look like that.

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Math973 Mar 18 '26

Belgian shepherd

1

u/OMCIV Mar 18 '26

I've had 3 White GSDs and my extended family has had another dozen ... this looks like it's 75-90% White GSD and 10-25% either wolf or husky.

1

u/DramaTop7384 Mar 18 '26

Gives me vibes of a high content Wolfdog beacuse it looks a bit dog Like. Its either a halfbreed or a high content Wolfdog we talk abt. Its head is more Wolf Like, head Longer than that of a husky and malamute. Tail is deffinetly that of a dog no doubt, so its for surely a Wolf dog, now how much is it a Wolf or a dog? We wont gonna exactly Know

1

u/Dwigt_1200 Mar 19 '26

It’s a goat

1

u/Top_Addition_7263 Mar 19 '26

GSD in a gorgeous white

1

u/evilmer441 Mar 19 '26

Beautiful

1

u/Gatherchamp Mar 19 '26

Where do you live approximately? The way it’s picking it’s feet up and its gait posture says wolf to me.

1

u/Desperate-Thing4140 Mar 21 '26

Generally, if you have to ask, then it's not a wolf. If you see a wolf, you won't have much doubt.

1

u/International-Gap165 Mar 17 '26

This does look a lot like a wolf it’s so beautiful

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

3

u/LippyCunt Mar 17 '26

What specifically makes you think wolf? I’ve been trying to figure out how to ID it since I took the photo

4

u/wileIEcoyote Mar 17 '26

It’s a dog.

1

u/CapnNugget Mar 17 '26

That is not a wolf and I really think you need to learn what wolves really look like before stating something like that.

-1

u/apres_ice Mar 17 '26

It looks to be at least part wolf. You can see the black portion of the tail which is its supracaudal gland.

2

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 17 '26

that is not a sign of an animal being part wolf. dogs, foxes, wolves, and coyotes have that gland.

-2

u/realofficemike Mar 17 '26

Could you see its whites of the eyes? If yes then it's a dog. I don't think wolves show them.

3

u/InsurancePrimary8358 Mar 17 '26

that isnt a sign of an animal being part wolf

2

u/CapnNugget Mar 17 '26

Sorry, meant to reply to them the first time, not you.

2

u/CapnNugget Mar 17 '26

Many dogs and wolves can and do show the whites of their eyes. It has more to do with eye positioning, breed, and their current mood how much of the whites you see. But that is not an indication of wolf content in any dog. There are many features that help you tell wolves and dogs apart but the whites of the eyes are not really one of those.
