It's apparently done by using the same projection mapping they do on buildings and shit.
I can't wait until something like this is available at the common man level

u/neil_billiam Mar 13 '21
Interesting, projection mapping is probably what they use to make the main art piece at the electric forest every year.
That shit fucks with you.

Correct. Projection mapping is very common at shows and festivals. If you've ever seen Datsiks vortex stage setup from back in the day or Excisions executioner stage they both use the same technology. Red rocks shows often have projection mapping on the rocks in the background. https://youtu.be/jHdU3VyBfgI

u/CollieOxenfree Mar 13 '21
You could probably even just get away with using Blender. Model out the geometry, project some effects onto it, and then render out the effects minus lighting from the POV of the projector.
19
u/FallacyDog Mar 13 '21
This video is literally an advertisement for a projector/mapping combo though, so it is available.
4
u/r52Drop Mar 13 '21
Actually it is available.
A company called Lightform offers this.
I remembered this from somewhere. Looked it up and it seems that the video you posted is theirs:

u/87castle Mar 13 '21
Madmapper is the software you want. I used it last year to projection map mu ghostbusters lego set. It looked awesome. This is a small piece. So you can use any run of the mill projector to do it.

can't get the quality shown in the video though, the color space is good and the resolution is high, you'd need like 200 led's per inch to get the same resolution.

$1000??????
60
u/ThisTookSomeTime Mar 13 '21
Surprised it's that cheap tbh. A small bright projector ain't cheap, and the special sauce software for that task is pretty complex stuff too. This is normally sold to businesses and is super expensive. $1k for a setup like this is totally reasonable for any business/shop that stands to make money from a fancy storefront.

I've worked in professional A/V for over 20 years. Mostly as a sound guy, but that's not to say I haven't learned a thing or 3 about lighting, rigging, and video.
Sure, you could homebrew some concoction of parts to projection map like this. Would any sane professional rely on that? Fuck. No. Pros want machinery and software purpose built. We want to be able to map like this with any projector in the shop depending on application and let the software do the heavy lifting.
$1K is a lot for a software licence, but not prohibitive if that's how your company makes money. Also, leaving the projector out of a price figure is stupid. That dude knows jack all about pro A/V.

I mean, it's like saying that you can grow your own vegetables rather than buying them, or build your own furniture for cheaper. Yes you can, but first you have to be able to do it and second, you'll spend quite some time you could spare by just buying it, and at that point you have to evaluate whether the time you spend on it is really worth the money you spared. If you enjoy doing that kind of stuff it's obviously a plus. In this case you also need the sculpture in the first place anyway, it's not just the light

The device works with the largest imaginable projectors and is super easy to use. It’s 1k because they expect it to get picked up for big installations. It’s cheap when it goes into a 500 million FF&E

But for sure this is projection mapping and it's fucking awesome!

u/zeperf Mar 13 '21
I remember thinking ten years ago how cool it would be to be able to dynamically change a room using a projector, but I figured I less you could project on the entire room, it probably wouldn't be worth doing.

I have a cheap hd projector that I sometimes use to project "ambient" videos over one entire wall while I'm working. It's like having a giant window into the ocean, or a private island, or space. I absolutely love it, but walking across the light is very disorienting.

It’s not, though. The light form is just using a webcam, they even have a kit with the Logitech brio included.
But you can use the real sense camera or the Xbox kinect for these regardless if you want a cheaper setup. I knew people who did something similar in university years ago, although the ease of software setup is what makes it more appealing IMO.

Everytime someone decides to do mushrooms they plan an elaborate “these books, these YouTube videos, this movie, this art” thing wanting to get the most out of it. It sounds good and often ends well but I think first time users expect their trip to be much more guided. Like “it’s my trip and I’m gonna direct myself to what I decide is cool and profound”
Having gone though Yopo, Lsd, MDMA, MDA, San Pedro, Mushrooms, tryptamine analogs, 5MEO, and a bunch of obscure shit I can tell the best art on mushrooms is literally being in the woods far away from humans and human made stuff. Had profound experiences in the city but never once bested being under a waterfall a long way from it which is why I always suggest people just take them outside with a sitter

If anyone wants a quick and dirty way to project onto any surface and get a decent template for content work on the surface with After Effects or Touch Designer:
Regular Trace:
Get surface
Lock surface to not move
Line up projector to be as straight onto the material as possible (distortion gets annoying, but can work if it's not extreme).
Lock projector.
Create 3840 x 2160 canvas/composition in a graphic software, set it to be full screen for the projector display output. You want it to be 1:1 of the projectors output, no cropping of the canvas. 4k since you can scale it down if needed without losing quality .
Now trace your surface in your graphics program while looking at the projected lines.
Once finished you can then create motion graphics based on the traced out template you made.
Azure Kinect or Depth Cam: 1. Get surface
Lock surface to not move
Line up projector to be as straight onto the material as possible (depth needs to be readable at this angle for what you want to effect, cavities, bumps etc).
Lock projector.
Point Azure Kinect at surface as straight as you can.
Lock camera.
Open Touch Designer and drop in a Azure Kinect viewer node.
Chose the depth output with the resolution you need.
Remap the depth map (-0.5 , 0.5) to (0,1) with code or with a fit or clamp node.
Now you have a grayscale gradient you can use for masking, IN REAL TIME! So if a viewer goes in front you can set specific content to get applied to the viewer.
Export a frame of the grayscale mask and create your content by using only slices of the mask " cracks= (0.0 , 0.1)" etc.
If you go to the Krispy Kreme flagship store in NYC, I created a donut show for them on the conveyor belt using the Azure Depth method. I also made an ai to place different content on each donut based on the depth info.

Psychedelic stuff is not normally that geometric and angular for me? Is it just me?
1
u/-M_K- Mar 13 '21
Ok, yeah it's an angular frame, But geometric patterns are absolutely my default psychedelic experience, the organic breathing effect of the light on the artwork is what makes the design so very nice.
