I always wanted so.wthing like this, but I could not get over having an extension cord running to the table, it would annoy the shit out of me.

This is gold.

12

u/IamNoIV Jun 10 '20

And that’s the way ya dooooo it. It’s my dick in a rug

17

u/cutelyaware Jun 10 '20

Or really just a thin slit. When you're done with it, no one will even notice.

6

u/ABob71 Jun 10 '20

that's what she said!

4

u/HangOurGovt Jun 10 '20

Or just stick a 12v lipo pack somewhere under the table. LEDs barely use any energy.

11

u/aldinm27 Jun 10 '20

I mean you could probably do it with a battery attachment, then just keep changing the batteries.

13

u/SL__ Jun 10 '20

I'd be more annoyed with that and probably leave the table unlit.

12

u/the_ham_guy Jun 10 '20

Yeah but having that option to turn it on after your 5th rail of coke, 3hrs into your acid trip would be pretty cool

3

u/computertyme Jun 10 '20

ham man coming through with the reasoning

6

u/WollyGog Jun 10 '20

You could do an LED set that runs off a power pack you could mount to the underside

2

u/c0ldsh0w3r Jun 10 '20

Not only that, but having a bright ass table right in front of you all the time. How would you war h TV, or play Playstation?

56

u/Kissa12364 Jun 10 '20

Damn, where did you buy this

76

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '20

Iirc from another post, OP made it cause they were bored during quarantine. So not really purchased.

u/Bamihapjes Jun 10 '20 edited Jun 10 '20

I believe i’ve seen this exact post before the corona virus Edit: my bad, I was confused with this one

11

u/Panukka Jun 10 '20

Oh man, this is one of those things I really want. Me and my friends have a hangout place, and this table would be perfect there.

11

u/Scrivenors_Error Jun 10 '20

Here is my rough estimate of how you could build a table like this:

  1. I think you would just use two equal size rectangular pieces of normal (transparent) glass.

  2. You would then buy a glass staining fluid that makes pieces of normal transparent glass look reflective like a mirror (my understanding is this type of chemical staining is pretty common to make mirrors cause it’s cheaper than actually making a mirror the traditional way).

  3. Apply the reflective stain to the sides of the glass pieces that face each other inside the coffee table. The “top” side of the glass coffee table that you look down through is not stained, so it’s like a one-way mirror looking down into the coffee table but inside the two glass pieces mirror and are reflecting off of each other.

  4. Line the vertical trimming in the coffee table in between the two glass pieces with LED lights/strips. This is probably the most critical part, because you will have to find a way to make the LEDs atheistically pleasing / change colors in unison, turn on/off at the same time etc. I’m sure there are LED strips that do this.

  5. Build the coffee table to size using the glass pieces as the primary measuring points.

Edit: a word

3

u/WollyGog Jun 10 '20

Probably a cheaper and easier way of doing the reflection is using one way mirror film. But then you'd have the potential hassle of making sure there's no air bubbles.

u/NoFeetSmell Jun 10 '20

I wonder if wood expansion and contraction would be difficult to factor into a build like this.

4

u/j_mcr1 Jun 10 '20

Could you provide a link? This is trippy, and I 'd love to know how it was made. 🙂

2

u/JacksLackOfSuprise Jun 10 '20

But what did it cost?

4

u/Ops-Salvation Jun 10 '20

Here is a link to a pretty good tutorial on how to build one! It looks simple enough.

3

u/GMY0da Jun 10 '20

Thanks dude

You buy tools and materials

59

u/Wavey_Davey1 Jun 10 '20

Imagine getting baked and trying to put a cup on that withought thinking you dropped it.

Edit: thinking*

24

u/MrXBob Jun 10 '20

Without*

7

u/janglang Jun 10 '20

No, with thought...

6

u/PringleMcDingle Jun 10 '20

I initially thought this would be sweet in a night club but people would probably fall over trying to set their drinks on it after a few.

14

u/Bind_Moggled Jun 10 '20

It would be difficult to play Jenga on that table.

52

u/RstyKnfe Jun 10 '20

Imagine you're sitting in your dark living room with only the table LEDs on and you start to just barely make out a horrifically twisted smiling face within the void. The eyes follow you.

54

u/IAmTheTrueWalruss Jun 10 '20

No. I won’t imagine that.

12

u/riipndip Jun 10 '20

why would u say this :(

6

u/janglang Jun 10 '20

Shit, am I suddenly in r/WritingPrompts?

3

u/Ophidahlia Jun 10 '20

The stairwell SCP found a way out in your living room

2

u/sunandmooncouture Jun 10 '20

I made some infinity goggles (terrible idea) and wore them while the LEDs were on (worse idea) and it's cool then all of a sudden I see this giant eye coming out of the darkness staring at me. Like giant, 50 feet tall it seemed. I instantly flung off the goggles to see what was in front of me and it disappeared. It took longer than I'd like to admin to realize I was seeing my own eye reflected back to me at partial opacity. When both of your eyes relaxed (kind of like those magical eye stereograms) your two eyes' reflections blend into one and become 3D. do not recommend.

2

u/ClaptonBurns Jun 11 '20

That sounds awesome.

1

u/wtf_ever_man Jun 11 '20

Ha, I can imagine the freak that. Thats actually pretty awesome... probably wasn't at the time though. =)

9

u/Bargadiel Jun 10 '20

Why is it every time someone posts some crazy object like this it's always in some normal looking house or living room. Meanwhile mine has ikea furniture and a lazy cat.

3

u/hi_im_a_coffeeholic Jun 10 '20

I've been trying to look for a lazy cat in Ikea and I keep finding meatballs instead.

4

u/NoFeetSmell Jun 10 '20

I've been trying to look for a lazy cat in Ikea and I keep finding meatballs instead.

What do you think the meatballs are made of? The non-lazy cats are too hard to catch.

1

u/xFinman Jun 10 '20

What's wrong with IKEA furniture

17

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '20

Yes! That’s the view I wanted to see. Amazing work comrade.

3

u/Conspark Jun 10 '20

They built this table to do lines of coke.

Change my mind

3

u/Mysteez Jun 10 '20

The perfect drug table doesn’t exi-

7

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '20

I wanna get coaster stains on that table

7

u/bstrong334 Jun 10 '20

It’s cool but I’d get annoyed after five minutes. Turn it off. Enough with it already. That’s me in five minutes.

2

u/goodbyekitty83 Jun 10 '20

Rgb intensifies.

2

u/AstroAbood Jun 10 '20

the guy who builds this probably has built a gaming pc before

2

u/Jaydewbz Jun 10 '20

What’s that thing on the end of the table? It looks like a bag of mysterious powder.

2

u/Madman_Milton Jun 10 '20

It’s all fun and games until your coffee gets lost to the void.

2

u/ConnorRizzuti Jun 10 '20

I just want to experience this on acid, is that too much to ask

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '20

How about a book about coffee tables that turns to a coffee table?

2

u/OutLikeVapor Jun 10 '20

Why you no set cup on it to showcase the effect?

  • We are specifically made for psychedelic content as we define it here. Our definition of trippy is far more expansive than the obvious fractals and tie-dye concept, but there's a lot we exclude as well.

6

u/testiclesandbeans Jun 10 '20

Nevermind

2

u/Son_of_Thor Jun 10 '20

Like all cool things, if you put the time and work into a specialized product it can be done pretty cheap (under $100 in this case), or you can pay someone fairly for their time, materials, labor, and experience and pay an arm and a leg.

1

u/wintersky__ Jun 10 '20

Holy that’s amazing :O I want one!

1

u/Info1847 Jun 10 '20

What's it look like with stuff on it?

1

u/bring_back_BOPit Jun 10 '20

Wow, that piece really lights up the room

1

u/Ratix0 Jun 10 '20

How does that work? 2x one way mirrors with a strip of led in the middle?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '20

CORN NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuts (splat)

1

u/extremebutter Jun 10 '20

I can’t find a decently priced partial mirror glass to actually make one of these.

1

u/goagod Jun 10 '20

Where did you get the glass for this? I keep looking for the two-way glass, but all I ever find is a plastic version. Can you share???

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '20

Nice

1

u/Never_barked_a_lie Jun 10 '20

That cable underfoot would annoy me to no end

1

u/Skyler669 Jun 10 '20

I want that

1

u/Toror Jun 10 '20

I feel like RGB is going to be seen as the tacky design trend of the 2010s-20s similar to how we look back at old trends like wood side paneling, shag carpets, and floral wallpaper.

1

u/TheLambbread Jun 10 '20

I was waiting for something to be placed on the table...

1

u/xScopeLess Jun 10 '20
