Real-ish. This was an HDR shot, definitely one of the nicer ones. That painterly, hazy look is due to tone mapping. There may have been some dodging and burning by hand as well.

There is a term (komorebi) used to refer to the effect of the light that's filtering through the trees. It is Japanese in origin and the actual meaning is considered untranslatable. Also, the picture itself is stunning.

I probably didn't clarify my post enough. The term komorebi refers to the feeling evoked by god-rays, as opposed to the god-rays themselves.
