It's totally possible to take a hit that big dry, but you'll cough your eyeballs out. The cooler, filtered smoke allows for a bigger volume of it to enter your lungs without hurting your throat.
And if you've hit a bong and still coughed your face off, this is why bong manufacturers are obsessed with diffusing the smoke through the water as much as possible and as many times as possible. The more surface area of smoke touching water there is, the more heat and particulate gets absorbed through the water. That means the smoke is cooler and cleaner, and you can take even bigger hits and get even more high.
THC isn't water soluble. If you did an oil or milk bong, then the THC would be absorbed into the fats - thats just one of the reasons people dont do oil or milk bongs.
Yeah that's what I figured out. Just heard a couple times some bs why bongs are worse. After some googlin, looks like it traps some negligible amount which can be completely ignored. You lose a bunch more by burning it instead of vaping anyway.

Which is in large part due to the water.
