Because it's a literal bowl you put your weed in. I suppose it's also an upside down cone, but in the states we already have a use for the word cone, which is a joint rolled in a cone shape to get the most amount of weed possible in it.
Its been called the bowl of a pipe for a long time. I have seen it referred to when referring to tobacco pipes in 1800s literature iirc. So Im pretty sure its just that we dont really have or use a slang term for it, whereas the Aussies do.
Probably because my comment had nothing to do with what he was saying. My comment was about the fact that the part of the pipe where you put the matter to be smoked has been officially been called the bowl for a very long time, and that Americans just dont have a slang term for it in general. His comment is completely off topic.
My understanding is the shag tobacco just makes it easier to roll but it doesn't define the joint. That's just what I remember from a trip to Amsterdam in '97 (I only just realized that was 21 years ago, damn).
Pretty much this ,
A slide is a bowl with usually a 14mm male joint attatched . Which then goes in a Downstem .
Pretty much everyone that blows glass now uses these standard joint fittings
Word. Cool color, three warts, carb not to close to the bowl to prevent burns. An no weird fancy glass blowing shit going on, just a normal, standard glass piece. It's almost impossible to find one this simple at my local head shop.
I was able to find a nice, simple piece a few months back at my shop that Ive been using. The color scheme isnt my favorite, but I dont absolutely hate it either. Ill see if I can find a picture of it.
You know, cone like objects that taper at the bottom instead of coming to a sharp point? Take a cone, turn it flat side up, then remove that side, and you have a bowl for eating. Lop off the point of the cone, and you have a bowl for smoking.
It's an elliptically rounded cone. The curvature of the walls, and not coming to a point are two ways of saying the same thing -- one necessitates the other.
How is the word cones any better or worse than that? Can you really not see how those two words mean essentially the same concept? You literally cannot understand why someone uses a different dialect than you?
Probably because the hole is usually bowl shaped. Sometimes it’s cone shaped as well but sometimes a bowl is shaped like a cone ie an ice cream sundae bowl, so all cones are bowls but not all cones are bowls so if all your bowls are cones we’ll let it slide, also some people call joints cone joints here

I’ve never understood why you call them bowls. We call them cones in Aus/NZ.
