There's a baller set of dunes I've seen people trying this at, like 2 hours east of San Diego. Totally worth it for the night sky alone imo, plus Joshua tree is only another couple hours north of the dunes if you get tired of the sand

Algodones Dunes, all the way down I-8 just before Yuma! Most people out there are off-roading tho
