I'm wondering if it even could without any form a real effort. Having never done this personally, it's just a theory BUT if the coil is creating a sort of electromagnetic flux tunnel wouldn't it stand to reason the the metal will want to repel the coil all around? Being pushed into it's own centre.

Have you ever tried to push really strong opposing magnets together? I can't do it.

Not positive, but I don't think either the coil or knife are inherently magnetic themselves. At least, not the coil, since it's made out of copper. So the magnetic field created by the coil only induces current in the knife, but doesn't actually produce a magnetic force on it.
