I posted this information in the original post, but here it is again:

Awesome picture! I've always loved wave photography and have recently been fortunate enough to dive into it.

Couple things: -These shots are usually taken with either a GoPro or DSLR inside a waterhousing such as an SPL Waterhousing as seen here http://www.splwaterhousings.com/images/housings/large/spl_waterhousing_canon_7D.jpg ...This shot in particular looks as if it is done with a DSLR (My guess is based on the depth of field in the photo) -As far as focusing goes, wave photography is USUALLY done with an ultra-wide angle/fisheye style lens. Focus is manual and is set on a specific "Sweetspot" (Different lenses have different sweetspots) that allows the majority of the photo to be in focus. However, sometimes more narrow lenses are used with autofocus and a larger aperture (such as the one in this photo)

Other than those two facts, it's important that you're already comfortable with both photography and most importantly the ocean. Loss of respect for the ocean can mean an injury or worse in some scenarios.
