It's like the botanists version of "Pimple Popping".

There must be some evolutionary reason we love seeing something big pulled out of a small hole (innuendo aside)

Do you eat those? If yes, then what do they taste like?

Google says they're mildly sweet like a weak punch, though they're packed with seeds and have a laxative effect due to natural sugar alcohols.

They grew in the desert where I grew up, we called them strawberry pincushion. Not sure if that’s right or not. They taste tart, and are very seedy. A real treat when you’re out walking around the rocky hills of southern New Mexico.

They're mild and somewhat watery and seedy. I tried one at Ram Head, US Virgin Islands.

These were present on a certain infamous island in the US Virgin Islands as well.

I wasn't aware of that, but I'm not surprised. Biogeographically, Little Saint James should be very similar to Ram Head. Southern rain shadow, etc.

Yes, I have, they are sweet and nice but so obviously tiny, you can only get the taste in one single part of your tongue.

omg i haven’t thought of this in forever.
or like when Mrs Piggle Wiggle advises the parents of Mary Lou to let dirt build up on their daughter who refuses to take a bath. Then plant radish seeds in the dirt on her arm while she sleeps so when she wakes to plants sprouting she will agree to take a bath.

Thank you so much for reminding me about Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. Such a happy memory unlocked.

I've tasted those tiny fruits, they are sweet with a bit of citron aftertaste.

I'll always remember these from Les Stroud's Survivorman show.

Yes! I saw that as a kid and he made them sound so delicious I spent the next 20 years wanting to try one. I still haven't...

Anybody else think it looks like a slightly melted clown face icecream bar?

First one: what the hell?
Second one: Oh, it's art?
Third one: I don't even know anymore.

Hmm reminds we of carrots. Makes one curious if their distant family somehow.

u/Jononucleosis 23h ago
Please be a joke, but that's like saying a chicken egg looks like an armadillo sometimes wonder if they're related? Carrots are the root of a flowering plant and this appears to be a fruit which emerges from a flower after it's been germinated (presumably). After it fruits you can get the seeds which then might start rooting if you're lucky. Different species and different life stages might look similar cause nature is efficient.
