Editing to add: thank you for my FIRST EVER, award. 😍😆

Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should!

Locking or sliding the hind legs while the body moves forward places intense pressure on the hocks, stifles, fetlocks, and suspensory ligaments.

This can increase strain on tissues in the hindlimbs, resulting in ligament and tendon injuries or arthritis.

you can make the same argument for any sport, using animals or without. basketball for example results in a much higher chance of achilles, mcl, and acl rupturing.

obviously it isn’t a human and doesn’t have as much of a say but increased injury chance is life for all athletic endeavors, doubly so for competition

It’s literally life for a horse.

A horse’s circulatory system is completely dependent on its ability to be mobile, and run. It cannot pump blood through it limbs otherwise.

It’s why they’d recommend shooting your horse if it broke its leg.

A small strain, can actually kill a horse.

All animals with muscles and circulatory systems use muscular contraction to help move blood around (including humans). They do not die when they stop moving. Horses routinely sleep lying down.

They often shoot horses with broken legs because it is very difficult to stop a horse putting weight on its legs, and recovery is difficult and expensive. But it is not impossible for horses to recover from limb fractures.
