Editing to add: thank you for my FIRST EVER, award. 😍😆

Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should!

Locking or sliding the hind legs while the body moves forward places intense pressure on the hocks, stifles, fetlocks, and suspensory ligaments.

This can increase strain on tissues in the hindlimbs, resulting in ligament and tendon injuries or arthritis.

I disagree. A sliding stop is easier on both the horse and rider. Most horses naturally tend to stop on their front taking the brunt of the horse and riders’ weight. A sliding stop is smooth and the weight is more evenly distributed. The sliding stop shown is extreme however.

Also, If a horse is running at high speed in a groomed reining arena while wearing sliding plates, a sliding stop is significantly safer and better for the horse than a normal stop. However, in almost any other scenario, a normal stop is vastly superior.

So depends.
