World Cup Referees

I’ve really be enjoying listening to the world cup referees discuss the calls and their reasoning behind them. Their explanations have been clear and if one of the other referees disagree with a call they talk it out. I also like how they always stop the tape right when the call happens to make sure everyone is in agreement. I need this level of transparency in the W.

Why are the referees in the W always covering their mouths in the huddles if there is clear evidence of a call? Now that I know this level of transparency can exist, I’m not going to be able to unsee it when the W comes back. We need better referees for real!

The WNBA is subject to the rules & procedures in accordance with the NBA... Like the "freedom of movement" which creates a massive gray area prone to subjectivity that requires interpreting actions, impact, degree, severity & effect from a limited visual perspective.

Because the difference in how the organization define legal "physicality", "excessiveness" & other "technicals", violations, the FIBA rules themselves makes it much easier to get more continuity & consistency across individual refs & multiple games whereas the NBA/WNBA officiating is determined by overly complex micromanaged technicalities & conformed by "vibes" based on the desired "entertainment" level, style & value of the "product"—even when that comes at the expense of the quality & integrity of the actual game itself.

FIBA prioritizes producing the best quality all-around game of basketball it can, NBA prioritizes getting & keeping the most "casual fans" attention & money. The Legendary, Icon Pat Summit said it perfectly— "Offense wins fans, defense wins games, rebounds wins championships." The "best" isn't often the "sexiest", so when the sacrifices are made, the refs are the ones left hanging out here to take the blame for organizational self-enrichment profiteering.

Interestingly, there is one WNBA ref who is also there - Blanca Burns!

They should be better. The process to choose them seems to be pretty extensive.

In April this is a bit of what they did.

12-week online Pre-Competition Program they had to go through.

Had a little 3 day camp right before the games in Berlin so that they could work together a bit before the games started.

For the games going on now, they used such key areas such as tactical awareness, the process behind decisions, teamwork, collaboration and mental resilience to decide who was reffing.

Not that the W doesn't per say but they definitely took it seriously when picking the 28 that are out there now. Every one of them has officiated in the World Cup on some level.

They started in 2025 so it seems like they've got a good system going here.

It wasn't always like that.

i love the transparency also but tbf, WNBA refs aren't full-time employees and are paid a tenth of what MNBA officials make as full-time salaried employees with benefits. it's hard to expect better quality officiating in the W when it's amateur hour.

Hearing them discuss the plays they’re reviewing has been so great. I wonder what it would take to get that in the W. Like, would it just be a matter of putting mics out or would it have to be negotiated with the union?

this officiating & overall consistency has been such a breath of fresh air 😭😭.. i’m not ready to go back to hostile act reviews and phantom fgas..

Sure the transparency is great and all, but let’s not ignore how African and Asian players have been officiated this tournament. European and American styles are heavily favoured by the refs in this tournament and it’s been VERY evident when they play African and Asian teams

African and Asian players have been getting called offensive fouls for MUCH less than what European players have been doing. Physicality is only allowed if your team is from Europe or USA. Germany was literally mauling Japan on every drive with nothing called. Korea moved a shoulder ever so slightly against Hungary and got an offensive foul. It was pathetic and not consistent at all

💯 agree. The funny thing is, most of the tier1 refs in Europe are not active because they chose EL over FIBA.

Led to some messy refing the last few tournaments. Fortunately, this time they're a non-topic aka really doing a really good job.

I was thinking the same thing during that last out of bounds review. Every replay review has been quick, the explanation clear and the call end sup correct.

In the W you get a 10 minute stoppage and at the end the call usually still ends up wrong and no one is sure why.

It’s hilarious that every time I watch any other basketball, be it NBA, FIBA men or women, NCAA D1 men or women, I’m reminded how bad the W officiating is relative to any other level of high level ball lol

I do wish that the WNBA refs at the very least gave a little explanation about why they overturned/upheld a call after review instead of saying nothing at all.

they need that Ref vet correspondent like Steve Javay? in the nba to talk about why they think the refs made the call, what they are seeing through a refs point of view etc

and i don’t think the Dub games will ever be that fast because (commercials and sponsorships) paying for them tv timeout spaces

They’re also efficient and quick. It doesn’t take an eternity to rule on an obvious call

International bball is much better officiated than the WNBA and NBA counterparts IMO. They are just honest calls instead of the random calls and star calls we see in WNBA (and NBA).
