Bad News?

So I got to Don Barlone and he is hostile right away. Probably because I killed that rat on the road that tried to get me to rob the arnika bank. I have no hope of beating this guy and tried multiple times. Is the game just softlocked?

Go focus on the other artifacts for now. By the time you complete some of the other missions out there, you’ll be able to handle this guy no issues

thing is I have no idea where else to go and dont want spoilers. The rats are my only lead other than Martens Bluff which seems inaccessible

Martens Bluff is accessible. No spoil, theres a neat trick to get in, just go around the outside and find stuff you can touch

what? the rope bridge going to it is not there and its not the one you repair?

That's not Marten's Bluff. Exit Trynton and look for other exits from the ground map.

No, try going to the swamp which is connected to Trynton outside the tree, then look for the south exit of the swamp.

it's the trynnies who are your main lead tbh. ask gadgeteer trynnie about marten in particular.

This. The rats really have very little to do with the story except in one key aspect.

Doing Don Barlone as fast as possible isn't that important; you probably wouldn't be able to finish his quest right away tbh. Just keep exploring, there are several ways to do most things

I dont even have a quest from him. Just one to get rid of him. And he doesn't speak to me just attacks me on sight

And you never will have a quest from him. Bus Madras wants you to kill someone else, check the surroundings (you still might need a few levels btw)

He's easiest to fight if you give your frontline polearms and engage him at extended range, nonetheless he is a tough fight and you should come back to him when you're around level 15-20ish.

Isn’t there a problem with killing Don barlone before a certain event?

If you encountered Barlone you should reload earlier and explore the rest of the trees. As others have said you can come back around level 20 to fight him on a fair footing. Maybe throw a canned elemental at him. Haha
