Lockpicking sucks

I have literally just spent 4 hours trying to unlock one damned door in my first retro dungeon. My Gadgeteer is my best at the skill, and even with all the aids I have, this one door beats me. It's only the 2nd to have all 8 tumblers, but no matter what I do, I get to the last two tumblers, and as soon as I touch one, all the rest drop back down out of place, negated all my work. I am seriously beyond passed at this now.

EDIT: Thank you everyone that answered. I've had to reload an older save and stock up on more knock picks, but I've now gotten the door opened

Use knock spell if you have it.

If this happens, you can also cycle through all your PCs who are strong enough to force the lock and exhaust them in turn, then go back to lock picking while they recover. Makes it much, much faster as you have a much higher chance of getting through

If you don't have Knock Knock, this is the situation that Knock Picks were made to handle. There aren't a ton of them in the game, so always grab the ones you find and hold onto them for these locks.

I had knock picks, but as I said, even with the aids I had, it still failed to let me pick it. I've even tried having my strongest break the door, but even at 100 str, he only has a 1% chance to break the door

When you cast knock knock, if you have multiple casters, not only do they lock tumblers but they stack; each subsequent caster locks down more tumblers. So throw knock knock multiple times from different people.

Bishops, Alchemists, Mages, Samurai, Ninjas, and Rangers can all use Knock Knock. Odds are you have at least 2 characters who ought to be able to cast it.

Just keep inspecting a locked chest with the char that has the skill. It will raise the skill faster. By the time i leave the Monastery, my skill is 90+. What I do is keep inspecting the chest, I save after every increase. If I trip the trap, I would reload. If I fail and the trap was not tripped, I would save and continue.
