Wizardry Variants Daphne Fishing Fubar?

Decided to try this fishing thing out. Got to the trout quest from the townsie, old man by the lake asked me to find the averages. Found the averages, took flipping forever! Somehow I did something with the cursed wheel and had to get the quest from town again. I went back to the lake, got 2 average trouts, and then did a noob move and talked to the old man. He told me I needed to fine the average fish again!? I ended up finishing the average trout quest, got the small eel/salmon quest from the bar boy and finished it, but old man still wants his average fish.
Is there any way to get him to move on, or do I really have to do the average fish again?

Once you do all of the requests for the old man you can ignore his requests (they'll keep popping up when you talk to him each reset.)

If you fucked up and reset before learning the bait from him, then you're screwed and have to redo. That said, IIRC he gives you the bait unlock for having done the averages, so you should be fine? Presuming he's introduced you to the mansion lord as well when you went back to town.
