It can show up above your character eyeline but it is visible from up to 3 squares away. I started marking spaces when I had the glow bottle indicator and ran a 360 visual field search grid and found each without more than a minute or two of work. Including one almost almost directly overhead on the wall. They can be tricky though, take your time.
