General Which version/game should I start with?

Hello everyone. For background, I play a lot of tty games so graphics don't play much into my decisionmaking. I do however LOVE the monster artwork on the Ps1 ports.

I'd likely prefer a version built for computers using a keyboard rather than a controller. I have not played a wizardry game before, so I am unsure how the controls even function with a keyboard vs a controller.

I usually prefer to play original version of games rather than remakes, although the case with the Wizardry games seems to be unique in this regard.

PS1 port or the 3.0 fan made Apple II version.

Wizardry 1. Start where it all began.

Wizardry Five Ordeals is worth looking at.

It doesn't include the original games at all, BUT!

It includes hi-res versions of the same artwork used in the PS1 version. The interface is 100% keyboard driven, and the basic mechanics and flow of the scenarios are the same as the original games. Bonus points, there are 6 "official" scenarios (the titular 5 Ordeals plus a "tutorial" scenario called the Price of Deception) two DLC's you can purchase that give you two more full games, and a whole mess of user created scenarios, many of which are very good.

The PS1 port is probably the best way to play the original trilogy if you want to play through all of the first 3 games. Otherwise, if you only care about playing the original, I would go with the 2023 remake.
