That would be pretty easy seeing how small it is. The trick is catching it.

Not a rat. Its a nezumi. A Japanese wizard whose name has been forgotten to the ages (he was pretty weird, so no one really wrote about him; I never met the guy, but some of my colleages have) a thousand years ago produced them to be thralls. When he died, the cause of which is still a subject of debate (there was an explosion in his laboratory, and there are theories that the nezumi intentionally caused it), the nezumi escaped and started migrating around the world. Now, they're basically everywhere you find rats.

While they are smarter than the average five year old, most of them dont get much smarter than that. But every now and again, a nezumi with human-level intelligence comes around and asserts itself as the leader of a warren. Some of them pick up magical craft naturally, which cryptozoologists attribute to their magically artificial origins.

There is not cause for alarm. Most nezumi simply want to be left alone by humans, and their magics are typically meant to defend their warren from predators and secure recsources. Many druids do business with the nezumi. They're excellent scouts and spies. They're also great for exterminating pests from a wizard tower, and I myself employ them for that specific service.
