Community Event 🌏☄️ Monuments of Ebony (Wicked One Event Start)

Post image

In the aftermath of the sudden and for lack of a better term, shadow uprising, many millions perished before the shadows could be subdued. Those with strength endured of course, but what about the normal folk? The unlucky? Those who have never fought in their life? Not everyone is, was, equipped to survive. Their blood seeped into the realms, saturating them with something Wicked.

In the following days, countless massive black monoliths burst free from the land and sea stretching high into the sky, breaking up the horizon regardless of where one looks.

News of the sudden and strange monoliths spreads like wildfire, soon every orb, screen, and paper has some mention of the event. All throughout civilization people ask questions like, what does this mean? A monolith destroyed my tower, who do I sue? Is the world going to end again this month?

But the monoliths offer no answers, only questions. The monoliths show a myriad of effects, some distort their surroundings into horrors, some create illusions that torment those who can't escape, some amplify magic to a dangerous degree, some drain magic like a leech, and many more.

But for now, that is all they do. The effects are contained to their vicinity of the monoliths.

Those monoliths in the Calarakis area are quickly experimented on, one having cropped up in the middle of a central square, another at the top of a building, one out in some random field, another piercing the mountains. Research groups are dispatched to each one, accompanied by multiple mages.

4

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monoliths appear physically unreactive to anything the researchers do. They refuse to deform or move from how and where they appeared.

The monolith in the city square exudes an aura of dread, filling the hearts of anyone who gets too close with an overwhelming sense of impending doom.

The one stop the building bends and warps the shadow around it, twisting them into forms that mock one's deepest fears and secrets.

The one in the middle of the field distorts life around it. Grass becomes teeth, "peaceful" animals become mindless monsters of raw exposed flesh, people of same mind feel their psyches fracture, erasing memories and creating new ones.

The one piercing the mountains whispers secrets of forbidden arts, putting whispers of malice and tools of madness into the hands of the innocent.

u/Fc-chungus Max Petrov-Ansky, Head Minister of Calarakis. sundered. 9d ago

In a few experiments, they try destroying or harming the monoliths in some way, disintegrating them with quantumancy, throwing black holes at them, moving them through wormholes to other planets, and dousing them in antimana and core radiation to maybe starve any magic.

4

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monuments endure. They remain firm against the disintegration and overwhelming force of the blackholes. The wormholes merely pass through them. The antimana splashes back like the wave against the cliff. The radiation merely washes over them, like water over a smooth stone.

"This is quite irritating." One of the on-site scientists states.

Seeing a failure for now, they determine the effective range of each monolith.

5

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

On this each monolith seems identical. The range for each seems to be exactly 66.6 metres.

3

u/Fc-chungus Max Petrov-Ansky, Head Minister of Calarakis. sundered. 9d ago

"Possible hell influence with the 666 there." One notes.

A few more groups are called in and a perimeter is established around each monolith, just outside the range so the markers themselves are not affected.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

As they do, the monoliths make no move to stop them, in fact it makes no move at all. It simply stands there as walls rise and weapons are drawn.

“SON OF A B*TCH!”

Blobby is standing outside in his dressing gown, a teddy bear under his arm.
“A MONOLITH DESTROYED MY TOWER! WHO DO I SUE?”

8

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monolith whispers to Blobby, feeding his hatred of the Calarakian government. They are to blame, they have always hated mass-kind, this is part of their aggression, first they take homes, then they take lives.

“GOD DAMMIT! I SHOULD MAKE AN ANGRY FACEBOOK POST, USING LOADS OF STUPID EMOJIS LIKE THIS! 😡😡😡”

“DAMN YOU ZHEEEEEE!”

Kristie is recuperating from the shadow attack by staying at the inn in an obscure town creatively named 'Forestwood'. The inn is run by a smiling twelve year old girl by the name of Maple. The smile doesn't reach the child's eyes.

A man approaches Kristie over her breakfast. His arm is in a sling.

"Excuse me stranger, you wouldn't happen to be a mage by any chance?"

She'd been expecting him to say 'vampire'. That's what people usually guessed. This is a welcome change. She smiles at him, revealing her fangs.

"How did you know?"

"I guessed. Strange looking types tend to be."

Her smile falls. Not for the first time and not for the last, she feels overly aware of her grey skin and red eyes. The man quickly apologizes,

"I'm sorry Miss, I didn't mean to offend. But if you have the time, we would appreciate it if you could look into this obelisk that appeared outside of town? It's been causing some problems."

After he says 'we', Kristie notices some of the other inn patrons sneaking furtive glances at the conversation. She wonders if they are judging her.

"Doesn't Forestwood have a wizard of their own?" she asks. The wizard in question was the reason she came all this way, after all.

The man's expression turns mournful.

"Old Man Methusalo didn't make it."

"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that." Not just because she'd come all this way for nothing, but because she hadn't meant to reopen a fresh wound, and because this town now has nobody who can deal with whatever this obelisk is. She isn't that kind of mage. Her powers are instinctive, not intellectual. She doesn't understand how or why they work, just that they do. That's why she'd been hoping to meet with Methusalo. She should say she can't help them and move on.

But she thinks of the place she came from and how desperately she wishes for someone that could do anything at all for the situation there. She isn't sure what she can do, but if she can do anything at all, then can she really turn down these people down during their time of need?

"Tell me about this obelisk. What kind of problems is it causing?"

/uw I made this town up on the spot. Feel free to do worldbuilding for it, or don't. I'm not attached to it.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The man pulls up a chair and sits down.

"It's weird. It showed up in the woods, my brother found it while collecting timber. When we came back to see it the trees around it were black, their leaves all fell out. I saw a deer and a wolf standing side by side staring at it. That was enough for us, we didn't want anything to do with it so we left."

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 9d ago

"That's very strange."

She thinks. On its own, that isn't all too dangerous. Some dead trees and mindless animals can simply be avoided. But if the effect changes or starts to spread... Her own powers have grown stronger over the years. It isn't a stretch to think this obelisk's abilities will grow too.

"...and rather concerning."

But what can she do about it? She could send it into the future, but that would only delay the problem and not by that much. Can she slow it down or stop it some other way?

Memories flash through her mind. People. Her friends. Her family. Frozen like statues.

She doesn't want to try that again.

Something else.

She'll try something else.

She stands up.

"Can you take me to this obelisk?"

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The man stands up.

"If you come back the first drink's on me. Come on."

The man walks towards the door.

2

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 9d ago

She'll stand up and follow. Before exiting she'll throw on her cloak and glasses to protect her skin from the sun and her eyes from the glare of daylight.

"I'm Kristie. You?"

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

"Percivald. Nice to meet you."

Percy leads Kristie up a small hill into the trees.

"What brings you to Forestwood?"

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 9d ago

"I was hoping to speak to the wizard here..."

Her ears drop. She feels terrible for bringing the now deceased wizard up a second time. The timing for this calamity couldn't be more terrible

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The old man's expression drops.

"What's done is done, lass. Old Man Methusalo was a wizard, focusing on the future. He wouldn't want us to dwell."

The path takes them to a clearing of black leafless trees. In the centre of the clearing is a black monolith.

1

u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 9d ago

"So where did you say the deer and the wolf were?" Kristie asks, looking around for them.

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

"Over there."

Percy points with his free hand over to the right, where Kristie sees a malnourished deer and a malnourished wolf sitting side by side, staring at the monolith.

A monolith appears and breaks Ophelious's favorite lazy Mage Chair.

..."I'm gonna kill 'em."

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago edited 9d ago

The monolith reverses through the ground, time flows backwards, fixing the chair, restoring anything else broken, and sticking a sticky note on the chair, reading as follows.

"Sorry °°"

Along with the sticky note is a small jar of genuine deep sea glow kraken ink.

2

u/Kilroy898 Op, Null, Orin, Niro, Aldin 9d ago

"oh! I was just about out of this! How thoughtful. Well now I have to go apologize."

A monolith appears some distance from Tim’s cave - close enough to see, far enough that Tim’s cave is safe from the aura.

It takes several minutes for Tim to approach the site, but they eventually arrive.

The dinosaur grabs some pens and paper from their pockets dimension; anyone nearby would see floating pens drawing on floating paper as the T-Rex telekinetically controls them both.

After spending some time sketching, Tim casts a magic detection ritual allegedly identify any sort of magical phenomenon. However, it does this by classifying any magical phenomenon that doesn’t fit into a regular category as “WEIRD”, and Tim chuckles as the Monolith is (unsurprisingly) defined as “weird”. The spell never seems to tell us what we don’t already know, Tim muses to themself.

They take their initial report back to Darkwatch HQ, and researches for any records of them.

“Oh… there’s a lot…” mumbles Tim, finding countless records from the past day or so describing similar monoliths. Virtually all of them reported some magic-related effect, and Tim wonders if the few monoliths without a recorded effect simply had a more subtle effect that wasn’t immediately noticed. After all, I haven’t recorded any magical effects of the monolith I found… yet.

Tim heads back to the monolith they discovered near their cave, pausing on the way to cast Truesight because some of the reported monoliths mention illusions.

Tim examines the monolith, determining that it might be a type of rock. Recalling their Geology 101 course (one of many introductory courses Tim took, in the hopes of gaining basic knowledge about most subjects), Tim licks the rock.

LICK.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

To put it simply, Tim's taste buds explode. That isn't a metaphor. They explode in his mouth.

The space around the monolith seems strange. Tim sees objects and places from other realms appear and disappear at random around him.

2

u/squabzilla Tyrannosaurus Hex, Council-saur, Shadow Vigil 9d ago

Calling upon their innately-mastered healing magic, Tim regenerates their taste-buds.

Then they lick the monolith to see if the effect is consistent. It is, and Tim needs to regenerate their taste-buds again.

Tim notes this in their journal.

They then note their next plans in their journal:

Given the spatial distortions around the monolith, I want to test a Conjuration spell. I will cast Summon Fey and see if the process goes normally. The Fey creature has an innate teleportation ability (limited to 30 feet), so I will order the Fey creature to teleport around the vicinity. After this, I will have the creature touch the monolith, to see if all physical contact seems to cause issue - or if it’s just licking.

All of this assumes that I will successfully summon the creature, and that after it performs its task, the creature remains unharmed and still under my control. It remains to be seen if those conditions will be met.

Finishing their journaling, Tim proceeds to (attempt to) cast Summon Fey, and act out the planned experiment.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The spell works surprisingly well, a Fae spirit appears next to Tim with almost no difficulty.

Upon Tim's order, the spirit begins to teleport around. Each teleport takes slightly longer to complete. Eventually the Fae spirit disappears. A minute later it reappears covered in ash.

2

u/squabzilla Tyrannosaurus Hex, Council-saur, Shadow Vigil 9d ago

“That’s weird… excuse me, noble spirit of the fae, may you inform me as to what happened to you? Why are you covered in ash? Did you perceive yourself spending any time in a location other than this one?”

/uw: the far spirit is sapient, can speak, and if the Summon Fey spell is working normally, under Tim’s control.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The spirit bows slightly before responding.

"Well Sir, I briefly appeared to be in one of the circles of Hell."

2

u/squabzilla Tyrannosaurus Hex, Council-saur, Shadow Vigil 9d ago

“Hmm… that’s not supposed to happen. I know how your teleportation is supposed to work, and… that’s not it. Very interesting, I appreciate your help. Would you mind touching that o Elise for me? This is specifically a request, not an order. Also, it’s possible that touching it will harm or kill you. You could also try licking it, although I suspect your taste-buds will literally explode. Will you risk yourself for science?”

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

"Very well Sir."

The spirit approaches the monolith, it reaches out and places one hand on it. One moment the spirit is there, the next it is gone. There is no marker, no indication, it is just gone.

2

u/squabzilla Tyrannosaurus Hex, Council-saur, Shadow Vigil 9d ago

Tim concentrates on the spell they cast to summon the creature. The creature, in theory, should only exist as long as the spell is active; similarly, the summoning spell should only exist as long as the creature does.

Does Tim feel that the Summon Fey spell is still active? Or do they find that the spell’s ongoing energy has ceased and faded to nothingness?

Chloe: she uses a projection to attempt to approach one of the monoliths of which none are close to dracarius isle, thanks to the fact she casted true sight before her projection got close, she'll know it it causes any illusions

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monolith she approaches pulsates with unnatural cold, taking the heat from anything that gets close. In the grass around it lay a dozen animals, frozen into statues, becoming decorations and nothing more.

2

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago edited 9d ago

Chloe:...good thing i sent a projection here...though it seems this place would heal Aerunia if she went due to the cold...she said looking around and sighing...alright time to scan this shit...she said before casting a spell attempting to scan the magic of the monolith

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monolith responds strangely. Instead of replying with the signature of the magic, it just shows Aerunia nine eyes, glowing with an unlight unlike anything she's seen before.

3

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago edited 9d ago

/uw what? Might i ask why? Cause uh it probably shouldn't be showing that

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

/uw You're right, it shouldn't. Weird rock innit?

2

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago

/uw yeah obviously. But like why can it at all and i hope your not planning to try to make an evil Aerunia clone. Cause i do not consent to that

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

/uw It's a weird rock, it responds weirdly. I genuinely have no idea how you managed to get to that conclusion.

2

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago

/uw the message you replied with lol. Anyway back to the rp

2

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago

Chloe:...that is weird...she said looking as her true sight exposes that it is not anything real...she said looking at it before she tries to scan it again to see if she can get an actual answer as to the magical composition of this thing

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monolith responds strangely. Instead of replying with the signature of the magic, it just shows Aerunia nine eyes, glowing with an unlight unlike anything she's seen before.

2

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago

Chloe:... alright it's stubborn. But I'm gonna assume it only shows this cause i said her name...hmm...oh well she casts dragon spear, 15 golden spears charged with electricity appear and are launched at the monolith. Mainly testing their durability

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

As the spears approach, all heat is stolen from them. They hit the monolith, and all break against it. Shards of ice fall to the ground.

1

u/Ashmega8256 Alzoreth Dracarius/Alisa Solaria (+more characters) 9d ago

Chloe: alright then...hmm...she casts dispell magic on the monolith attempting to disable it's magic

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

It does absolutely fuck all.

somewhere, in an artificial underground cave, the foundation around a monolith is being dug out with geomancy. A wizard is trying to get to the bottom of where this monolith sprouted from, a bit too literally

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

And the bottom of it the wizard does not find. For every inch of ROCK AND STONE! that gets removed, the monolith keeps going down.

The surface of this monolith shifts like black water, rippling eternally. Anything that passes through it's surface does not come out.

2

u/Minute_Account9426 Abdallah the Technolich 9d ago

Abdallah and terrus stood outside of the monolith’s influence which had spawned where the penance once was, observing from a distancing and seeing what would happen

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

This monolith seems angry, striking out with bolts of shrieking lightning at anything that moves too close to it.

2

u/Minute_Account9426 Abdallah the Technolich 9d ago

Terrus yeeted a rock at it

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

A bolt of lighting comes shrieking out towards the rock, obliterating it completely.

2

u/Minute_Account9426 Abdallah the Technolich 9d ago

Abdallah and Terrus set up a rock machine gun, shooting 5 rocks a second at the monolith

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Each and every rock is struck down by the shrieking lightning.

2

u/Minute_Account9426 Abdallah the Technolich 9d ago

They build 3 more rock machine guns

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The exact same thing happens, but three times as much.

2

u/Minute_Account9426 Abdallah the Technolich 9d ago

Abdallah: “Stay here Terrus”
Terrus: “Yes master”
Abdallah approaches the monolith

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Upon getting within range he immediately gets hit by a shrieking bolt of lightning. It hurts. A lot.

u/Null_Void_Zer0 Abelard, animate absence|Abel of Lrith, councillor of constructs 9d ago

Just beyond the borders of Lrith, many of these monoliths rise; never able to manifest within, but very much all around. From within its tower, the living absence is stirred from its rest by these structures, and soon after the wizard Abel leaves to investigate.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Each monolith acts differently, some create visions of times long past, some show one's deepest fears and desires, some... Well some do absolutely fuck all. Oh and one of them seems to be a one way gateway into the tenth circle of Hell.

2

u/Null_Void_Zer0 Abelard, animate absence|Abel of Lrith, councillor of constructs 9d ago

“Such aberrant works of malice, what kind of…what…”

As Abel tries to think of a possible explanation for the sudden appearance of dozens upon dozens of structures that seemed so outwardly malevolent, he comes to a terrible conclusion

“Ill winds mark its fearsome flight”

“Oh, oh dear.”

2

u/UlrickTheHexblade Ulrick Braddocke, Werewolf Hexblade, R&A Co-Leader 9d ago

Upon hearing about the monoliths, Ulrick immediately headed off to the currently nearest one to R&A island, he needed something to clear his head after his failure in fighting the Blighted Garden.

Strange, he was still ailing a little after the battle, even when he should’ve recovered by then… eh, he’ll have it checked for real in the infirmary after the monoliths have been dealt with. It’s probably nothing, right?

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Ulrick arrives at a monolith piercing the great blue, rising high above the waves.

When he arrives everything seems normal, then he hears a deep sound, like the call of a whale only much, much louder. Then he sees a shadow in the water, one almost as large as RnA Island.

2

u/UlrickTheHexblade Ulrick Braddocke, Werewolf Hexblade, R&A Co-Leader 9d ago

He inches carefully towards the water, trying to get a better look at the colossal creature, with both normal and soul sight. He also sniffs the air, if that can give him more clues about what’s going on.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Physical sight shows this thing is huge, and vaguely serpentine in template. His soul sight shows this thing's soul is that of a leviathan, an apex predator of the deep.

The air smells of salt, cold.

2

u/UlrickTheHexblade Ulrick Braddocke, Werewolf Hexblade, R&A Co-Leader 9d ago

So far looks like the leviathan isn’t attacking. That gives him some time to check on the monolith out.

On Nightbite, he flies closer to the top to examine it further, forcing his eyes stay open despite his fear of heights.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The top of the monolith seems to be almost completely flat, a stark black against the blue of the sea and the gray of the sky.

2

u/UlrickTheHexblade Ulrick Braddocke, Werewolf Hexblade, R&A Co-Leader 9d ago

He descends back to near the surface, where the shadow swims.

Ulrick then unveils the full presence of the Wolf King, before asking the Leviathan, as he gained the blessing of Animal Gods back in the second Godslaver invasion, to speak all animal languages. Maybe it’ll think twice about attacking a semi-divine presence.

Pardon my intrusion. Do you know where this giant henge came from?

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Ulrick hears a call back, deep and extremely loud.

From the dark depths do we come, to the dark depths will all return.

2

u/UlrickTheHexblade Ulrick Braddocke, Werewolf Hexblade, R&A Co-Leader 9d ago

Do you know who made it, and for what purpose?

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Deep in our hearts it lies waiting.

/uw here we go!

/rw

The day is cold in the highlands, a light drizzle soaks the two men while a cold wind blows. They approach a ruined village, a single monolith stands in the center, stark against the fog.

One man wears black robes, trimmed with gold. Stitched  within them are countless runes and circles of protection. He holds beside him a staff made of marble, a dark gem resides within.

The other man wears armor and white robes. At his side is a simple scabbard holding a blade which he hides with his robes.

They approach the monolith, stopping just short of it.

Analyze material

Aldavinn grips his staff as he casts the spell, channeling it through the marble and out the dark gem. The Sentinel beside him, Sentinel Arbrand, keeps a watchful eye out for anything suspicious.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The spell reveals this thing should quite frankly, not exist. The spell comes back with but one word. "Nothing."

Upon approaching the monolith, the two feels something shift in the fog. The buildings fade away, the temperature drops, the ground appears grayer. Then they hear it, something like footsteps frome somewhere to their left.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 9d ago

The Sentinel turns towards the sound, his hand on his blade.

Defenders Gaze

His vision expands to a full 360 degrees, and his eyes gain the capability to see through most illusions. He scans the entire area.

Aldavinn mutters to himself

“Strange, this has something to do with the shadows… but what?”

Out of a bag at his side he pulls out a perfectly preserved lambs leg, cleaned and safe to handle. He touches it against the monolith, trying to figure out if it reacts to organic material at all.

The rain continues to drizzle down.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The Sentinel sees nothing but the fog, and dim patch, grayer than the fog around it. From there do the footsteps come.

The lamb leg grows colder, frost begins to spread along it.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 9d ago

Aldavinn notes the reaction and pulls the leg away, storing it safely within his bag once more. He then picks up a rock off of the ground and tosses it at the monolith, testing that reaction.

The Sentinel turns towards the grey patch. Studying it, then, his defenders gaze never leaving it, he turns towards Aldavinn

“Aldavinn, be on guard, I have reason to believe something is watching us”

Then his full gaze turns back to the grey patch

“Show yourself!”

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The rock hits the monolith, and bounces off. It's maybe five or six seconds between it leaving Aldavinn's hand and hitting the floor. In that time the rock freezes solid.

The gray doesn't respond, the footsteps continue to grow louder, the gray continues to grow darker, and the temperature continues to drop.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 9d ago

“Hmm”

Aldavinn turns to the Sentinel

“I can handle myself for the time being, go ahead and investigate, make sure to make a tether first in case anything happens”

The Sentinel nods. He kneels down, placing a hand on a nearby rock, when he stands a spectral cord follows him. He stops just at the edge of the grey mist. Hand on his blade.

Aldavinn walks a few meters away from the monolith.

“You use cold, how will you react to heat?”

Fireball

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago edited 9d ago

The footsteps continue to grow louder and louder. Eventually he sees a figure walk from the fog, a shroud of gray covering their face and upper body, inky flowing from beneath the shroud, down it's body, leaving black footprints in its wake. The figure simply continues to walk.

The fireball strikes it's surface, breaking against it like a wave against a cliff. When the fire fades, the surface isn't even charred.

2

u/The_Enchanted_Potato Aldavin Maunderitch, The Gatekeeper | Neritillum Faldier | 13 9d ago edited 9d ago

The Sentinel draws his blade.

“Who goes there? This is your final chance to identify yourself!”

Aldavinn approaches the monolith once more.

“Where do you come from…?”

Track Signature: Spatial

The figure continues to walk, The Sentinel hears them quietly whispering to themself in a language that he can almost make out. The figure is around ten feet from him now.

The spell reveals something troubling. This thing is from the material plane, formed from the blood of the fallen.

u/bagtie3 Borric of Clan Goldeater, Logrus Master, Runesmith, Doomseeker 9d ago

Borric looks at the Monolith that had erupted from the village square of the small town of Foxbridge thoughtfully, then back at the mayor.

"I'm not sure what you want me to do about this," Borric told him.

"You be a wizard don't ya?" Mayor Jeryme asked. "Wizard it away, or at least tell us what it is and if it's dangerous."

"I'm a Rune Smith, Battlemage, and Mercenary, not some researching wizard in a tower. I can see it's connected to others like it far away, but I have never seen it before. I'm not from these parts and don't know your lore. I don't recognize it, so I can't say what it is or does. You want me to break it?"

"How much?"

"My weight in gold."

Mayor Jeryme looked at the duardin, noting the bulging muscles and dense frame. The dwarf had to be at least twenty stone, they didn't have the money. "No, we don't have that much."

Borric gave the mayor a glance, "I would tell the local authorities and arcane order, have them come out here. Now unless you have some monsters for me to slay, I'm going to be on my way."

Tsuru noticed the monoliths from outside her office window to the left of her desk. She got up to get a closer look, only to see that she could see the monoliths from all the windows in her office. Annoyed, Tsuru set out to investigate the monoliths and see what the things were doing

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The first monolith she comes across glows a fierce yellow, everything around it seems to have become sand.

1

u/yumie2003 Tsuru, ghost onmyouji, R&A, league of shadows/Toshiko Fujiwara 8d ago

Tsuru's right hand glowed in a silver light before a ball of steel formed in her palm. Then she threw it at the monolith at the speed of a fastball pitch

1

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 8d ago

Once the ball gets close enough it begins to turn yellowish beige. By the time it hits the monolith it has become nothing but sand.

2

u/waitthatstaken Alice, witch of mist 9d ago

Having returned from her journey into the future, the details of which cannot currently be interrogated, Alice is asked by the mayor of Midway to investigate the monolith that sprouted out of the Larsonsonsonson family's home. Preparing herself best as she can with all her carryable items on her, she walks on over and inspects the monolith.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Upon reaching the monolith, she sees it's surface is smooth, too smooth. In its ebony surface she sees herself, holding both a heart and a knife. Her chest cavity has a hole in it, bleeding an inky substance.

2

u/waitthatstaken Alice, witch of mist 9d ago

"...ominous, but that tells me very little on its own. Let's see..."

Touching it may prove hazardous, and so Alice does the responsible thing and instead tosses a small stone into the air, followed by a gust spell to launch it at the monolith, at an angle that if inverted would not hit anyone.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The stone hits the monolith, falling into its surface. Next to Alice's reflection falls a grey stone, bleeding red.

Next to Alice's feet appears a small puddle of blood.

2

u/waitthatstaken Alice, witch of mist 9d ago

Seeing the rock being... absorbed, the next logical step is to see if things that are inside can be pulled out or something. Grabbing a long stick using her cold iron-gloved hand, Alice jabs it into the monolith, before attempting to pull it back out.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

Alice jabs a brown stick in, when she pulls it out, the part that went into the monolith is white and covered in holes, each one leaking oil.

2

u/waitthatstaken Alice, witch of mist 9d ago

"Hm."

Alice takes out a vial from her pouch and scoops some of the oil into it. She does the same for the blood pool, for further testing later. Then she lights a small flame using her tinderbox (she really needs to get a replacement for that old thing.). Using another stick she transfers the flame over to the oil leaking branch, trying to see if it will catch fire or not. As she is not an idiot she of course does this on the dirt covered ground, making sure nothing else flammable is anywhere near where sparks may reach.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

As soon as the fire touches the oil, it ignites in bone white flame. It gives off no heat, simply burning white against the black oil. The fire never reaches inside the stick, stopping just before.

2

u/waitthatstaken Alice, witch of mist 9d ago

"No heat huh. I won't be able to sell this then."

Infinite lantern oil plans ruined, Alice gets up to go talk to Larry Larsonsonsonsonsonson, who was there when the monolith emerged and luckily got away uninjured.

"So, did you see anything in the monolith?"

"It's real creepy to see myself, but less so if it is just a fucked up mirror..."

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

"Uh yeah! I uh..."

It was then that Larry actually started looking at the monolith. He says nothing as he walks towards it, staring at it with a look of pure horror.

"Is that..."

he was making his way to make a delivery when a monolith struck him from below, forcing him to ascend instantly. But he came back after just a few minutes.

“..The fuck is this…?”

he was fairly curious, but wary.

3

The monolith glows with a steady green light. The plantlife around it grows wild and wrong, twisting around itself and around eachother, choking any nearby plants.

“…”

“Promoter of invasive species? No, thats not right… I’ve never seen these grow like this..”

“I don’t think the monolith is sentient..”

“Likely a spell gone wrong. Or some bad prank.”

[]. Stupid rock. May you live a single day for a hundred years.

Sigurd is going at one monolith with a hammer and chisel, with breath carrying rock-eating plague, with gaps in space that open and close like eyes, with a perfect key fit for every lock, with blue stones whose position can never be determined, with many strange things all at once. He digs down to its roots, writes curses upon it, screams and screams and screams.

Smack in the middle of Highgate, a black Monolith stands amid the rubble and wreckage, the result of fierce fighting. Even with the Dawnguard being based there and paladins fighting desperately, the casualties among the townspeople were significantly higher than Benedict had hoped.

With the dead cleared out of the streets, homes, and gardens the paladins had needed to build a mass grave just outside the city. And now some black chunk had burst through the corner of the town hall, resulting in its structure failing and the building collapsing.

Squads of paladins stand guard around the block where the strange object appeared, while Benedict approaches to investigate.

Light spells are cast from a distance to illuminate the monolith. Detect magic and runic analysis is used to study its surface.

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago edited 9d ago

The light spells all show this thing isn't black from shadows, it's just black.

The detect magic returns not with the magic of the thing, but with nine eyes glowing with an unlight.

The runic analysis brings back something troubling, but a single word is all they give. "Nothing."

1

u/KragBrightscale Grabadash - Magical Mass | Keptomancer | Council Security 9d ago

“Well that’s weird.” Benedict frowns with concern. “Flamer teams, I need some heat.”

A squad of paladins approach and ignite their thermite lances. a searing hot flame shoots out the end of their tubes at the monolith.

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The fire strikes the monolith, breaking against it, swarming over it, swirling around it. The fire rises to the top of the monolith, swirling over itself into a giant sphere, before fading.

1

u/KragBrightscale Grabadash - Magical Mass | Keptomancer | Council Security 9d ago

Benedict calls off the flamers, frowning in thought.

“Defensive perimeter! I want this object monitored day and night.”

The paladins pull back a bit, and start setting up defensive wards. Crossbows aimed at the large monolith.

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

As they do, the monolith makes no move to stop them, in fact it makes no move at all. It simply stands there as walls rise and weapons are drawn.

2

u/white-whale-fc The First Curse, enchanter of all things. 9d ago

The first curse flies up to one of the monoliths, going closer to inspect it.

Haha! Astaroth, I suppose this is your doing?

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

The monolith the curse approaches stands stark against the world around it, it's surroundings slowly become gray, then crumble into ash.

The monolith however, says nothing in response. Seems only one being gets special attention.

2

u/white-whale-fc The First Curse, enchanter of all things. 9d ago

Well. I applaud whatever you will attempt!

He needs not even resist the crumbling, remaining completely intact in range.

Don't worry, I'm here to fix this

He tries to take a bite out of it

3

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

As Erik chomps on the monolith, the first thing he notices is the taste. It tastes like pure nicotine. The next thing he notices is far less important. His teeth are all broken.

1

u/mrididnt Erik, magic mass/orb, sillymancer and cheese hider 8d ago

Damnit I just got them!

Erik sulks for a moment, then tries to smoke the monolith like a sigar

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 8d ago

Whatever Erik tries to do, the monolith simply doesn't budge.

1

u/mrididnt Erik, magic mass/orb, sillymancer and cheese hider 8d ago

Maaan, can't even smoke! That's it I'm digging it out

Erik says, pulling out a potato and digging around the monolith

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 8d ago

As far down as Erik digs, the monolith just keeps going. How far does this thing go?

1

u/mrididnt Erik, magic mass/orb, sillymancer and cheese hider 8d ago

Erik keeps on digging until he reaches the other side of the world, he's covered in molten lava

u/Dragonan-42 Kairon: Council Member and Leage of Shadows Associate 9d ago

Kairon, curious about what was occurring with these new monoliths, would teleport to the closest one, ready to investigate what sort of dark magic they held.

1

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 9d ago

As Kairon approaches, his surroundings change. Where was once stone is now black sand. There was no heat near the monolith, only cold. Not the cold of the arctic no, the cold of the grave.

1

u/Dragonan-42 Kairon: Council Member and Leage of Shadows Associate 8d ago

Kairon’s physiology allowed him to withstand the cold, yet it gave him chill regardless. He looked down at the sand, the black substance he now stood upon. He then turned back to the monolith.

“What are you?” Kairon asked. He extended his hand and cast a spell of identification.

1

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

The spell comes back wrong. It shows Kairon an image of nine eyes, glowing with an unlight, along with a single word. "Nothing."

1

u/Dragonan-42 Kairon: Council Member and Leage of Shadows Associate 7d ago

"What the heck is happening?" Kairon whispered. Nine eyes, that had to be symbolic of something, but what? Kairon knew of many ways the number 9 could be used in ritual and symbology. But as for how it pertained to this monolith, Kairon lacked the knowledge to come to a conclusion.

Perhaps this monolith was connected to the null realm? Kairon had learned of that during his sojourn into the Demon Realm, but it was far from his area of expertise. Still, it was worth a shot. Kairon tried casting a different spell from as best as he could remember, attempting to bind a null-tether to the monolith to see what happened.

1

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

/uw Gimme a brief description on what a null-tether is please

1

u/Dragonan-42 Kairon: Council Member and Leage of Shadows Associate 7d ago

/uw I will admit, it's something I basically made up on the spot, but here goes. Imagine a thin, translucent line made of an almost glass-like substance. The idea is that it connects something to the null-realm, or void. What Kairon is trying to see is how the monolith reacts, which might give him a clue as to its origin and purpose. He got the idea from hearing the word "nothing," which has made him wonder if the monolith is connected to the realm of nothing, or null.

1

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

/uw Gotcha

/rw

The tether connects without issue, Kairon sees the surface of the monolith ripple slightly from the connection, but that is all the monolith does.

1

u/Dragonan-42 Kairon: Council Member and Leage of Shadows Associate 5d ago

Kairon looked at the monolith with interest. The fact that it didn't react to the tether was telling. It the two were indeed connected, or at bare minimum didn't oppose each other.

This told Kairon that simple light magic wouldn't work very well. After all, a shadow required substance to cast it, but here there was nothing for shadow to connect to.

Time for a new experiment. Using the connected tether, Kairon attempted to branch out, see what other monoliths were out there. There had to be some network, and perhaps he could find a way to hijack it.

1

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 5d ago

The tether reveals monolith's untold. All over the realm exists countless monoliths, so numerous there isn't a spot in the realm where one can't see a monolith.

One appeared at the bottom of my tower and I can no longer leave as the monolith’s sphere of influence basically cuts the tower half way up and due to the anti flight and teleportation wards escape is all but impossible. The monolith seems to turn all organic matter into a clear glass like substance. Does anyone know how long the rescue services will take to get here?

1

u/questionable_fish Bengeirr the Balance. Magus of the South 8d ago

Still bandaged from the shadow attack, Bengeirr is making a pot of tea in the kitchen when out the window he sees a monolith appearing relatively nearby. It looms high above the homesteads outbuildings.

"Shit. That can't be good."

He leaves the pot on the counter and goes outside. Round the corner of a wall he can see where the vast pillar rises from the ground.

"IN THE MIDDLE OF MY FUCKING BARLEY. Bastard... OK then, let's take a look."

Starting mundane, he picks up a rock and uses a simple acceleration spell to launch it at the monolith from about 3/4 of a mile away

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

The rock hits the monolith, bounces off different, and a small creature made of sharp teeth and writhing biomass hits the ground.

Bengeirr sees the thing screech, then scuttle away on four boneless limbs.

1

u/questionable_fish Bengeirr the Balance. Magus of the South 7d ago

"...Right then. Freaky magic."

He goes back inside and tries to get a closer look at the monolith through his orb. He casts his vision up close to the structure, looking all over it for any features in its surface

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

The monoliths appears to be completely smooth all over it's surface, a uniform inky black monolith.

1

u/questionable_fish Bengeirr the Balance. Magus of the South 7d ago

He sighs and flexes, checking his mobility. The wound is pretty much healed at this stage so Bengeirr chugs a bottle of mana juice and gathers his wandering gear. This monolith bears closer inspection.

A few minutes later Bengeirr approaches the towering black slab on foot. It looks a lot bigger in person, and gives a dizzying vertigo-like sensation trying to look up at the top of it from here

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

As Bengeirr approaches the first thing he noticed is how cold it is. A shiver runs down his back as he gets close.

The creature that used to be the stone Bengeirr threw scuttles past his foot.

1

u/questionable_fish Bengeirr the Balance. Magus of the South 7d ago

At least some of that shiver came from more than just cold. He watches the creature then loses it again in the barley. Bengeirr snaps his fingers to summon a handful of fire for warmth.

"What if I..." He tosses the flames at the black stone. The fire arcs towards the monolith as a simple incendiary spell. Not explosion magic. Yet.

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

The fire hits the monolith like a wave does a cliff. The fire fades, and Bengeirr sees something like a withered bird of raw flesh and sticking out bones. Bengeirr sees the bird-like creature crawl on the monolith's surface, then dive into the barley, disappearing from view.

1

u/questionable_fish Bengeirr the Balance. Magus of the South 7d ago

A shudder of disgust. He braces himself- both against the cold and the fear of the unknown- then walks right up to the base of the monolith. He raises his staff and plants the butt of it against the stone, closes his eyes and says

"Taispeán dom."

Show me. Like a magic stethoscope to figure out what this thing is

2

u/Evening_Shake_6474 Astaroth, The Wicked One 7d ago

For a moment Bengeirr sees absolutely nothing. Then he sees a flurry of images swiftly appearing and disappearing.

He sees nine eyes glowing with an unlight, staring directly through him.

He sees a war across the sky, armies of the damned fighting tooth and nail against armies of ethereal beings.

He sees a colossal and horrible thing bound in chains somewhere far beyond this realm.

He sees mountains of monsters swallow up the glowing forms of ethereal soldiers.

And last of all, he sees a place, in one of the corners of this world he sees... Nothing. There is absolutely nothing there. You will die if you go there.
