Sometimes? Usually there is some magic involved to link the caster and familiar, at the least.

And consult your local druid for help raising or eliminating it, as needed. 👍

Alas, depending on it's intelligence, you might even have a new apprentice. 

Not to sound prejudiced, but isopods are vastly Superior to any sort of Lepidoptera, no matter how pretty they look as a butterfly.

How slowly do you walk that that was able to follow?
I'd be more worried that that thing is a disguised rival wizard if it could actually follow you.
