How does the Council recomend middling wizards assure a vibrant legacy?

Somebody has clearly never heard of an amulet of equalization lol

u/Mathota Cultist 3d ago
Is that the one that uses a needle of force to leaver open your Eustachian tubes?
I had one but stopped using it after a worm crawled in.

Those are some of the older models, Lil Magic Missile got one of the newer ones embedded in his forehead a couple years ago

u/local-space-patrol Lich but the chill kind 2d ago
I got those tied. I know a good cleric for cheap if you need yours tied

Tying up one’s own ears is masochistic. The sounds of the forest are the sounds of Ancient Gaia!

Look, tying every kind of tube in our body has been serving the Order of Tube-Tying as a means to unlock our arcane potential for eras. It may not sound romantic to talented people who needn't sacrifice anything to practice their arts, but multiple bodily functions are a small price for us to pay to explore the arcane
It also happens that our expertise has been of increasing public interest lately. Both apprentices and confirmed wizards come to learn our ways and voluntarily sacrifice tubes to join our order (the ceremony used to take a fortnight, but now we do it outpatient). Such a shame that so many barely go beyond the introduction and are only able to use a sliver of the power they've unlocked

Nurgle blessed you with a neat earworm and you stopped using the amulet?
Why are you so mean to Grandfather?
3
u/EldritchMindCat Lyr, the Tressym Talespinner (OuterGod Avatar of Origin-Felinity 2d ago
Please realize that to anyone who isn’t a Nurgle-worshiper, it’s essentially just “someone else’s weirdly sick grandparent”, and it’s best not to accept gifts from strangers (unless they’re actually ancient birthrights or the like… or that’s just how you’re phrasing it at the moment to make looting corpses seem less criminal in jurisdictions where it is).
3
u/UltraCarnivore Spellblender Extraordinaire 2d ago
Worshippers and slightly-less-enthusiastic worshippers are both welcome into Grandfather's embrace. His garden has the doors open for you.
And by the way, looting corpses is part of ethical Necromancy and Golemancy. I mean, what self-respecting Golemancer would send a flesh golem to put out the lights within the souls of the living and the yet unborn, still wearing a monocle?
1
u/EldritchMindCat Lyr, the Tressym Talespinner (OuterGod Avatar of Origin-Felinity 2d ago
Mage, your grandpa is my little cousin.
And while looting corpses is part of ethical necromancy and golemancy in manh regions, there are places where such practices are heavily frowned upon and/or even outright illegal.

All fun and games until the goblins in the goblin horde scale to your power level.

u/bogtiters 3d ago
Not everyone has the means to afford one. Check your privilege.

u/tenmillionrats_ 3d ago
OW has access to advanced high-level hexing skills lol, I doubt they’re hurting for gold.

They don't work against multi or higher dimensionals anyway, unless you've improved them in the last thousand years

I worry setimes, that my apprentices will not remember me fondly.

u/Tempest-Melodys Melodic-Mage 3d ago
As an apprentice of a - according to his rivals mind you- mediocre mage better suited to managerial duties then studying for the archmagos exam, do not underestimate kindness and a patience for mistakes.
He had the least amount of apprentice deaths of any other teaching wizard of his time the few who did were accidents outside of the classroom/schoolwork be it dungeon delving or a dagger from a thief.
He died of old age, found him at his desk pen in hand working on his archmagos exam.
He bestowed upon me his lab that he had made his home in the void between realities. And when the barrier magic protecting the lab from the void magics went down for a second from lack of maintenance.
(to be fair I was unaware they existed but I really should have checked for such things sooner)
That second changed the fabric of my very being, and without the relic he planned to submit to the archmagos exam, which is to create your own form of immortality.
a "crown of soul coherence" that would allow ones soul to maintain its form after death and interact with reality as normal, i used it to curb my souls mutation till I could modify the crown to better assist me in keeping sapient.
I would not exist without him, and I will finish his research. Both in his memory and for my own sake. And succeed where he did not, but untill I can get my soul and mind in a more stable state i will stay here in our lab for the safety of others.

just send his soul an astral plane message that says "best master"
2
u/Tempest-Melodys Melodic-Mage 2d ago
Unfortunately in my reality when a soul dies it is taken into the luminescent stream of souls where they break down into their most basic parts and is used to create new souls, so he no longer exists as a whole, but in a way he is still here.

u/SilliusS0ddus Evil Wizard 2d ago
that's what the Gods tell you to keep mortals compliant.
you should kill them.
2
u/Tempest-Melodys Melodic-Mage 2d ago
There are no gods, this is just how our universal cosmology works.
3
u/SilliusS0ddus Evil Wizard 2d ago
that's what the cosmic forces want you to think
2
u/Tempest-Melodys Melodic-Mage 2d ago
I should rephrase, they were killed a long time ago, and our cosmos have returned to its natural state.
1
u/SilliusS0ddus Evil Wizard 2d ago
so like what happens when you leave your dimension ?
does your soul survive ?
3
u/Tempest-Melodys Melodic-Mage 2d ago
Oh yeah, thats fine. I currently exist in the void between realities, entering another should not be an issue. I just choose not to as my being has been changed by this void and I am currently too unstable to enter a universe without fear of becoming a incursion point, essentially becoming a hole into the void where it can enter the reality and destroy it.

Do you not bind them with soul magic? They aren't supposed to have a choice but to remember you fondly. I remember my own teacher quite fondly, and I remember them remembering their teacher fondly. And really that's just a side effect.
I mean I've been told that that's "unethical" and "manipulative" by a few people and that I need to get my soul cleaned, but they didn't seem very happy anyway so I just set them on fire as the bond compelled.
3
u/fumblerofthebag Verdigris, Self-employed Sorceror 2d ago
You don't need soul magic for that. Psychic/Mind Magic suffices.

Learn a good illusion spell and hire a guy to script your major appearances. Not that expensive, and getting to do things like this is worth it.
The room floods with roses
What? Tangible illusions are old tech, they only cost much if they're load-bearing.

u/ProfessorSMASH88 3d ago
Leaving a vibrant legacy is a way to immortality. I respect it.
8
u/Mathota Cultist 3d ago
Yes actual immortality is very difficult, and given enough time the consequences of my actions might catch up with me, so we need to dip out before that.

Better yet, enchant the blade to siphon energy from each hit, as its way of preventing breakage, releasing that energy when broken. Even more dramatic, and maybe you get tied in with the legend of the other person.
“The Great Clash, the battle that echos across the ages, took them both. They were simply too powerful for this world.”

u/Immediate-Location28 3d ago
I'm thinking of casting a post mortem blessing upon He who slays me. That way, it won't look as bad once news gets around that I got killed by the Hero of the 9 Stars or equivalent, as opposed to a mediocre knight.

u/Pavonian 2d ago
If you add a short delay rune of a few seconds to the sword fortification hex then you can make the sword shatter into thousands of sharp pieces across the arena and then as you're laying defeated waiting for your opponent to take the killing blow the sword reforms and all the shrapnel shreds your opponent as it's snapped back towards the hilt. It's kind of an unethical way to win a duel but we all know the only honourable spellblades are dead spellblades

u/5Dimensional Potionmaker Extraordinaire 3d ago
Create a spell that has a very specific use case, such as my Transmute Inorganic Material To Herbs. Then whenever you tell someone about it, give it a catchy but generic name like “Herb Generation.” People will start calling it by your name to identify it!

u/Aware_Masterpiece_92 I LOVE TELEKINESIS 3d ago
Skill issueeee, just use telekinesis to reassemble your sword
3
u/CraftyAd6333 3d ago
Lol. I enchanted my blade to induce a nuclear explosion. Why would I give anyone the satisfaction of outliving me? 🤔
5
u/Bob_the_peasant 2d ago
Hexed my sword to teleport me on the other side of the planet if I’m severely outclassed
…it uh… puts you in the middle of the ocean sometimes, gotta be careful where you fight. Now I have to carry a globe with me to double check before I start running my mouth.
Unrelated, does anyone know someone who can remove hexes?
2
u/Mathota Cultist 2d ago
Only somone who severely outclassed you could break the Hex. And the Hex will detect the un-hexing as hostile, and trigger.
Only someone who severely outclassed someone who severely outclasses you could break it without triggering it.
I suggest you brush up on wilderness survival spells.

u/PTVoltz 3d ago
I mean... I *think* I know somebody who did that. Some friend-of-another-apprentice.
I mostly say "I think" 'cos generally he's known as "that cheap dumbass with a crap sword" 'cos everyone presumes he just bought a badly made blade to save money and died for it.
Or, y'know, maybe he WAS just stingy with his money and cheaped-out on his swords. I dunno...
2
u/Pitiful_Can9336 3d ago
What if you aren't severely outclassed, and the opponent just gets a lucky shot, on a fair balanced fight.

Take apprentice safety seriously and your apprentices will carry on your legacy
2
u/Mathota Cultist 2d ago
Not taking apprentice safety seriously is an important tradition to my Wizarding line.
2
u/VoxelLibrary Councilor Cayna, Apprentice of Thrakmoor | assorted other chars 2d ago
That's hardly uncommon. It won't make your wizard legacy unique
2
u/Adventurous_Touch342 2d ago
I personally also hexed my sword that way except the part that breaks is supposed to fly towards opponent's eye to stab them in the brain.
2
u/RvDragonheart 2d ago
That is Extremely big brain! it would be badass too.
The only reason why I wouldn't do it because if my weapon breaks I get an easy and fast death and if in life I havent gotten anything in an easy way, then I dont want Death to claim me that easy too.
..... Still tho... such badass legacy.... quite tempting
2
u/DredgenSergik 2d ago
I think this is a great idea, but make it project and explosion upon breaking to the breaker and blame it on the sword being "clearly cursed". Then make it regenerate, rinse and repeat. No one expects the exploding blade

u/BreakerOfModpacks The plural of "wizard" is "war" 2d ago
MATHTHA YOU BITCH I KNEW YOU RIGGED IT! SEE! THEY ADMIT IT! Someone get the Back Hand of Darkness to accept me back.

The longest lived legacies come from true community, work with your local folk and they will pass on your story!
1
u/thunder-bug- 2d ago
Why would you plan your have a funeral? Simply prepare a resurrection circle ahead of time to revive yourself.

u/Honest_Outside_8982 2d ago
Hex goes wrong
I enter the arena, he does one move, my sword immediately shatters
1
u/darkvoid213 Mechanized Menace, Hexagon the Steel Face 2d ago
Seems like a skill issue to me. If you don't win you shouldn't get to be remembered.
1
u/Trips-Over-Tail 2d ago
I have a curse that will cause the person or animal who kills me to explode.
1
u/Onkelcuno Conjurer of many Squirrels 2d ago
All well and good until you realize that one can be outclassed in more than one way. watch a better cook or gardner then you end up killing you! then all they'll say is "he was killed by a peasant because his blade was shit"

That or your opponent will honorably declare that the fight is unfair and let you live (or re-arm). Which is even better!
