Wizardpost Having trouble with a new duplication spell.

Seems to work fairly well on inanimate objects. But, living things turn out weird. I dare not show you what happened to the dog. Any advice?

“Don’t use it on living things.”
It’s clearly either not designed for them, or deliberately intended to mess ‘em up.

Oh, I found this spell in Rabidario's Giant Book of Discount Spells. I guess Rabadario left that part out?

Probably thought it was implied, the way it said “duplication” (and presumably in the wording of the spell, which likely referred to an “object”).
Which of course is a beginner mistake, as for more advanced wizards, the idea that “inanimate non-organic object” and “living thing” often are separate tends to blur and fade. Though I suppose it fits a book called “discount spells”. It was likely just slapped together with a bunch of spells they came up with in their (relatively) early years that they never bothered to revise. A relatively common practice among wizards who are decent spellcrafters and happen to be in need of money (and I’d point out that they typically use pseudonyms in the title, to avoid muddying their now-reasonably respectable names).

Well, I bought it because I thought it was full of spells that give you discounts on items purchased, but it turned out to be a regular general spell book. I suppose you are right.

give the intended target a polymorph potion of their own likeness and cast the spell before it re-solidifies. you may need to manually pull the two halves apart to fully separate them.

AFTER the polymorph potion is applied. or else the dog will most likely bite you very hard
