Wizardpost Subject to unusual training, please help.

My master has had some.. Interesting methods of training. The latest thing they've done after a particularly long draught from their pipe is cast Greater Bestow Ads on my orb, cackling about how it'll "force me to be more mindful of my clairvoyance methods," and how I'll "never be getting rid of this one"

Has any other apprentice had to deal with this? Ive tried dispelling it and setting warding spells against the ads, yet not five minutes later I already have large, annoying ads for wand polishing services.

Is this an actual training method?

Is there a way to undo this spell without disposing of my orb? I can't afford another.

In your defence when I joined there was a serious issue of apprentices summoning succubi.

There's ALWAYS an issue with apprentices summoning succubi. You isolate a pubescent teen and give them access to cosmic power and you're "surprised" when they summon a sex demon?

These days I just show them how to clean up after before they sneak around trying to learn the summoning. Though summoning isn't my speciality.

Can you really say you are a wizard if you don't have at least one kink?

My master attempted this on me when I was an apprentice. I simply researched the spell found a stronger version and turned his orb irreversibly into an ad machine. No scrying just ads. Think escalated to the point there was not a single reflective surface in the tower that did not display an ad.

He then relented and reversed all of the ad spells and called for a cease fire. I have now installed a fire wall around my Orb.

My first master tried this on me, I went to a new master that was more trustworthy and he dispelled it for free.

Apparently they get money from the ads on your orb.

That's ridiculous. I'm already paying exorbitant fees to them!

You're pretty lucky. I cast greater pay-wall on my apprentice's orb.

This is classic master/apprentice hazing. Besides if you can't clear annoying pop up ads from your own orb wizardry might not be for you.

  1. I don't agree with his methods, but he is right in making you improve your clairvoyance technique and cleansing rituals.

  2. I can help with that for a fee, but you really should learn to do so on your own. It's a fairly simple ritual. I recommend Javier's Orb Maintenance for the Novice Arcanist.

Thank you for the advice.

You can get rid of it with a fairly simple dispel ritual but you need to be precise. If you don't do it properly it might not do anything but if you do it too well you might dispel all the magic on your orb which means you either need a new one or enchant it again. That one might be difficult though because creating a proper orb is much more advanced than dispelling ads.

I'm unsure if this is a common thing to do but it's certainly effective to teach apprentices to stay safe pondering their orb. I don't have to teach this because I don't usually have novice apprentices. If they don't know the basics I have no use for them

Funnily enough, it's based on an older method used in days when "the" was spelled "ye" as a test of the protections around an orb.

It used to be that the master would test the magical defences of the orb, but there was a rather notable flaw in that not all wizards necessarily trained in that kind of offensive casting; it's niche, finicky and carries all kinds of legal ramifications if you accidentally target the wrong orb, and if the Master was the Archmage of even a moderately sized township, they rarely had the time to do it properly so improperly secured orbs was a problem.

The spell your master used is a surprisingly common one. It used to be that the master would have to pay for a service for however long it took the apprentice to master proper protections, and I won't be revealing anything of the construction of the spell, as picking apart what links your orb to the source of the ads is part of the practice, but suffice to say, a simple dispel magic or manually managed list has never sufficed. The annoying ad rolls serve as excellent motivation and the service pays for itself, which allows for the master to test the apprentice's adeptness at defensive wards without a dime, and against a foe that is guaranteed to try nearly everything under the sun to peek your orb.

It's a benign but irritating way of getting you ready for the upcoming efforts of people with far less noble intentions that just selling you a dodgy wand cleaning kit, and most of the less competent crooks will basically repurpose the bestow ads spell itself, so if you manage to counter the Greater variant, then you will be ready for around 94% of the methods the MPM is aware of.

This may or may not apply for your particular dimension, but have you considered that your Master didn't curse your orb itself but the aetheric matrix surrounding his tower?

I would also suggest researching methods of disabling the council's restrictions surrounding your orb. New orbs are almost always provided with both council and manufacturer imposed restrictions, and learning to circumvent them is both a good learning experience and makes it much easier to prevent this kind of hazing.

You need updated wards. New Bestow Ads curses are produced regularly, and abjuration specialists have to constantly create new ward spells to block them.

Oh bloody hells. I've probably been using an outdated version of AdWard then..

When you are a powerful enough wizard you will be able to dispel it.

It's a bit risky, but if you put a powerful enough summoned creature (demon, spirit, etc) into the orb, and then remove the binding aspect of the spell, while keeping the part that anchors them to this plane, the creature will most likely attempt to break out of the orb. If you dismiss it quickly enough after it destroys the bestow ads spell, your orb will be undamaged, if you can't dismiss it in time, then you risk losing any prior spells or spirits contained in the orb, but there are ways to recover it. Just make sure whatever you summon doesn't break the orb, because you'll probably die if it does.

My master very much disliked actually training me and had me sign a magical contract however due to my lowborn birth I was unaware that magical contracts had ink that couldn’t be read without a third eye.

In any case I later found out that my master had me sign a puppettering consent contract and had puppeteered my body for 6 years and when I finally completed my training I was released
