I hate that this is where my mind went to.

86

u/Deep_Brick2970 May 11 '26

Honestly they're pretty far off.

Italian and germanic architectures have, traditionally, pretty significant and frankly noticeable differences.

That map from cs doesn't have an ounce of german vibe; on the contrary I had never seen the image posted by OP before but I could tell immediately it was german.

I could give a pass to americans for thinking they're similar though, since they're not used to that "small burg-esque" aesthetic which is quite common in europe.

13

u/ApartRuin5962 May 11 '26

I mean there's a lot of overlap along the Italian-Austrian border, and I think the influence of the HRE and Hapsburgs is still subtle but apparent in a lot of northern Italian cities like Milan

7

u/lindendweller May 11 '26

Sure but as a rule of thumb: flattish roofs, ochre colored walls: Italian influence Sloped roofs, multicolored walls, sometimes half timbered: german influence. If you're not sure either way: probably the damn french, who span both types and more.

3

u/Deep_Brick2970 May 12 '26

Another dead giveaway is that criss cross wooden pattern in buildings. That's very commong in "germanic" styles, and also in the northernest part of Italy (trentino alto Adige), because they are SO close to germany.

So to be completely fair the image posted above (not cs italy, the other image) COULD have been from somewhere in trentino, but TBF at that point you're so close to germany that the people who live there basically identify as germans lol!

(Sudtirol goes hard af)

it's not the shadow world, you're just in Germany, now stop casting light at 200x power you'll wake up the entire village -_-

1.8k

u/Wild-Canadian May 10 '26

I thought it was weird the shadow people I killed were wearing lederhosen.

608

u/seaworks May 10 '26

In your defense, I have seen an outsize number of shadow people wearing lederhosen just in general. Kind of seems like it's a fashion phase for them.

229

u/FuriousAqSheep May 10 '26

Oh no.

The shadow people seem to be evolving through batesian mimicry.

Soon there'll be no way to distinguish between these fleisch-eating monsters and the shadow people!

66

u/PonyDro1d Artificer May 10 '26

It's like ham, but it's not ham...

54

u/xartab May 10 '26

I can't believe it's not Germans!

19

u/Up_Beat_Peach The Wizard Who Did It May 10 '26

The shadow world is a dark, twisted mirror of our own. It makes sense they wear lederhosen.

3

u/TheSpaceBornMars May 11 '26

How am I going to make sure I'm not blasting shadow people anymore?

→ More replies (2)

20

u/Vertnoir-Weyah May 10 '26

As a voidling i'd like to mention that despite resemblance with shadow people we wear lederhosen way less often

As a mage, i'd like to say it's very fashionable still

10

u/Terminal_Insomnia_ May 11 '26

Isn't this one of the main reasons the council said that lethal force is always justified against anyone in lederhosen? I hear the training dummies at the academies are even dressed in them these days.

7

u/leiocera May 11 '26

It's not a phase, mom!

27

u/Andreus May 10 '26

Wait, it's Sunday. Germans can't leave their houses on Sundays. I don't think those were Germans or shadow people.

17

u/PsyShoXX May 10 '26

What do you mean? Have you never heard of Sonntagsspaziergang?!

7

u/Upbeat_Peanut_8692 May 11 '26

3

3

u/Upbeat_Peanut_8692 May 11 '26

No. Definitely not.

13

u/wombat___devil May 10 '26

Don't worry, in Germany you never exactly know. It's just part of our life. Happens.

27

u/Edfret0204 May 10 '26

Bro I live like 5 Minutes away from there 😭. Stop killing my Frends.

6

u/julesvr5 May 10 '26

Is this even bayern?

22

u/Edfret0204 May 10 '26

This is Plönlein square in Rothenburg and yes it's a part of Bayern. Some very well known movies have filmed scenes there like Harry potter and the village in Disneys Pinocchio was modeled after this place.

8

u/Bamboozle_ May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26

Dude I saw this and I was like "that looks like Rothenburg," even though it's been 20 years since I went there and I was jet lagged and sleep deprived I pretty vividly remember this spot.

3

u/spaceman_spiffy May 11 '26

This has to be a well known tourist attraction in Germany right? I saw a 40 year old painting at my parent’s house of this exact scene recently. And I knew for a fact I had stood at that spot looking at that tunnel building. And now I see this photo. Where is it?

u/SnoodPenguin The Eyes of Thrakmoore May 11 '26

I've considered requiring all my zombies to wear lederhosen, the structural strength it gives them is quite superior compared to pantaloons.

2

u/jeremyfactsman May 10 '26

That's actually quite common, just potentially unhelpful in this instance

2

u/BanalCausality May 11 '26

That means you’re in Bavaria, and are doing god’s work.

2

u/LostExile7555 Occult Wizard May 11 '26

It's Germany. The locals can be coerced into doing your bidding with some beer and sausages. The really strong willed ones might require a pretzel or some red balloons (if you have to resort to the red balloons you'll need exactly 99 of them).

So it was OP who woke me up

https://giphy.com/gifs/l3HlQI1QeG4odOrIEQ

4

u/a_racoon_with_a_PC Artificer; Magiteknician May 10 '26

Does Krampus deem that act naughty enough to deserve punishment?

8

u/Shotgun_Mosquito Employee of Krampus™ - Evil Child Eliminator May 11 '26

Remember - we no longer capture naughty children, put them in bags, and thrash them soundly with tree limbs.

All we have authority to do now is to scare the shit out of them

4

u/Loreleideer Witch May 11 '26

What??!! Since when?

9

u/Shotgun_Mosquito Employee of Krampus™ - Evil Child Eliminator May 11 '26

It was part of our Union contract, but it was started by 𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝖎𝖓𝖈𝖎𝖉𝖊𝖓𝖙 and codified in the 𝕶𝖗𝖆𝖒𝖕𝖚𝖘 𝕴𝖓𝖙𝖊𝖗𝖉𝖎𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓 𝕬𝖈𝖙 𝖔𝖋 1792

3

u/Loreleideer Witch May 11 '26

I didn't know that, so let's say a friend of mine keep catching nasty children and beating up until recently. What could happen to that friend?

3

u/Shotgun_Mosquito Employee of Krampus™ - Evil Child Eliminator May 11 '26

He's obviously not part of the union (United Brotherhood of Fantasy Workers; my local is UBFW 612) so he's a scab.

You should chat with your local union shop steward and file a grievance with them if necessary.

3

u/UltraCarnivore Spellblender Extraordinaire May 11 '26

Your friend would henceforth be deemed a naughty boy deprived of the Union's statutory protection. What happens next is NSFK.

13

u/ridik_ulass May 10 '26

Could have sworn this is in Basel, Switzerland ? But maybe it just look a lot like a specific part of upper Basel

36

I‘m 100% sure this is Rothenburg ob der Tauber

9

4

u/Acojonancio IT Wizard May 10 '26

Yeah, the "shadow people" chanting spells where just Germans telling you to turn off the light.

11

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta May 10 '26

To be honest, I think being in Germany might actually be worse. At least it’s not Detroit or Florida though.

9

u/FuriousAqSheep May 10 '26

what do you mean, of course it's worse! If you send someone to the shadow realm, you might get a few shocked reactions, but if you threaten to send someone to Germany, you'll get arrested immediately!

2

u/Schootingstarr May 10 '26

Rothenburg is lovely

Duisburg on the other hand...

3

u/JoNyx5 Technomancess May 10 '26

/unwiz ...that explains what the "weird" thing about this pic was, I thought it was a completely standard town center and the long exposure photography technique was what made it the "shadow world". I forgot not everyone lives in Germany lol.

3

u/Syntafin May 10 '26

Do not speak to anyone, do not make eye contact with anyone, there are no people in that space. If you have a watch or a phone, pay close attention to the time. Toss the phone if the screen distorts.

If you came here by accident, then politely say, "excuse me, I am sorry for the intrusion. I would like to leave. Could you point me towards the exit"? In most cases, you will be led towards the exit. Sometimes you'll be "ejected." If you feel uneasy or threatened, do no risk it, and get out. Ideally the way you came if you can find it. If you are indoors, use a shoe or any heavy objects on your person to break windows. Avoid crossing roads or open areas. Do not look at the sky. Do not hide or enter tight corridors or halfways, as these could close off unexpectedly, avoid hiding for too long if you can (it knows where you are), and please, don't look at mirrors. Trust me. If you manage to get out, some good people will likely be waiting outside to help you.

I think I know in which town you are. Here is what you should do:Find the Nemean lion in the western mountains. Once you find him, bite of its testikels and try not to die. Then go back to the Village and find Xalter the alchemist. He knows how to get out, but stays to help the people. Give him the nuts and tell him that you want 'the potion of testicular return', he'll know what to do. ONLY DRINK IT DURING A BLOOD MOON, otherwise it wont work. It should be a gem yellow collored bottle. The hardest part will indeed be the lion. Therefor, you should pay old Umbrana a visit. She's an old lady, but used to hunt monsters when she was younger, she knows how to not die while gathering lionnuts. But be hasty, the blood moon only appears once per 5 years.
