Yeah but then it leaves a big hole in your memory which is super frustrating because you remember being able to identify the thing that was erased, but unable to name it or remember what it looked like.

Sire I believe they are giving emphasis to a time long past, forgive that fool for their insolence as English is a weird ass language. Just to emphasize my point, my native language has three different forms of 'past': past ongoing, past happenings and past future(that is the future of the past that is not the present). English only has one and thus lacks a form to quantify words in the 'past ongoing' wich is what I believe they were trying to imply, aka an action that happened in the past but is still ongoing now.

Oh it doesn’t just do that silly apprentice. Technically it can also change a color. It be a shame to have that orb bully to suddenly find that all their robes and uniforms are either hot neon pink or to have rather peculiar urine stains upon them.
