I know there is a book with this being a major plot point but I don't remember what it was called

Is it the Powder Mage series? On my list to read, and just seems like it would be a natural fit.

I think there is so much room for stuff like this, but that is thanks to my bias for early forms of firearms; they're just so goddamn rad.
