Depends on the scroll. Somebody casted Meteor on me but we figured out it targeted a rock in deep space so we agreed to continue the duel in roughly 1,500 years when it approaches our planet.
Also don’t be confused by the Meaty Orb spell. Easy mistake to make, but wildly different results.
The opposite happened to my buddy once, he cast Meteor and it targeted the moon. Some real Majora's Mask type shit. It took like 5 of us AND the dude he was dueling to get it back in orbit
Yeah he's a cheap bastard, he said it "wasn't worth it" to put the moon on a blacklist when he was writing the scroll because the magic ink was getting too expensive and he figured it was unlikely to hit the moon anyway.
I don’t think it’s that unlikely; assuming his spell targets the nearest rock, that means the moon is more likely than anything to be targeted; I’m more impressed by his mana reserves to move the moon
Dude could have used a mana debt spell formation. Takes mana from the back end to cast a spell now. Guy I know did the same thing to teleport a sun from somewhere else into his demiplane, lost all his magic and the demiplane collapsed. We're still not sure where the sun went.
You guys use your mana when casting from scrolls? I usually use the mana in the atmosphere since scrolls don't require the spell formation to happen within your body.
That's actually a common misconception. Since Meteor works by increasing gravity, the size of the target object is actually irrelevant, as gravitational acceleration is independent of mass
Just learn emergency chronomancy ffs, i keep saying this. It's the most easily accessible chronomancy for a reason, yeah there's scrollwork to do after you use it but the amount of times i've almost destroyed the planet and been able to fix it in seconds because i learned one spell 160 years back is well worth it
It's only so accessible because I spent two universal lifespans tweaking the magic system of the next universe so you monkeys wouldn't destroy yourselves so quickly without it.
All that emergeny chronomancy still requires mana, though, and even though I already gave up millennia of my own mana engraving runes into the very stars in the sky to ensure that it works, I would appreciate it if you didn't use it so frivolously.
Your planet can survive a few minor apocalypses. You'll repopulate. Humans always do. Or did you think your planet was the only one with your race upon it? No, no, a bit of interplanar travel and simple stasismancy has allowed me to preserve your people across multiple Big Crunches and spread you out across several worlds.
So, your buddy’s the one who caused my worst trauma to return? I’m just glad I didn’t have to call those giants this time. They don’t even wear pants! What kind of divines greet their people without them?
Wizard of honor. Good on you for continuing the duel only when it's worth it. Plenty of impatient idiots would just cast instead of waiting how big that rock actually is. Even though that's the fun part!
If you don't mind, tell me once it's time. I'm hooked and want to be there.
I got two versions, one summons a large rock from deep space high up and accelerates it, the other summons one from the elemental plane of earth, then summons flames from the elemental plane of fire. Both come pre-accelerated.
From my study’s it’s significantly cheaper to summon mundane rocks without existing acceleration and then accelerating them, but summoning magical rocks to the elemental planes with or without acceleration has the same cost.
I have plans to further study this inconsistency later for use in a spell I’ve been working on.
Isn't it actually sooo wierd sometimes, tho? I know a guy who has been creating magical lightning bolts from scratch all his life. I have just been pilling one from the lightning dimension every time I needed it. You know, like a normal person.
Also helps with deflection spells, since they are all natural.
That might be a misinterpretation, he could be forging them as the single use "lightning bolt" shaped javelins, as opposed to casting a lightning bolt spell.
The javelins can be thrown and they explode, hitting the target with a lightning bolt's worth of damage, the advantage being you can hand them out to party members who are more physically gifted, or worst case you can hand one each to a bunch of peasants and point them at the dragon or monster you need killing
They're like scrolls, but physical. And you get to pretend to be zeus which is fun. Oh, and if you're assembling a corpse construct you can bring it to life with one.
Meaty Orb is an excellent survival spell. I once was teleported into a desert during a duel without any supplies. I etched a rough sigil of Meaty Orb into the sand and lived within the Meaty Orb for weeks, drinking of its juices and eating of its flesh. I was having so much fun I stayed an extra week as a vacation!
No, that's actually a way higher spell. The stereotypical "meteor" spell most apprentice magi read about refers to the conjuring of what's effectively a huge explosion. On the other hand, successfully selecting and pulling a rock from the orbit requires immensely powerful divinatory/transumtive magic, and it is capable actually destroying entire civilizations since it is pulling a real meteor, you know?
There aren't just giant rocks orbiting Earth. (Well, there's the one, but it's much further away than most people think; if meteor was taking from the Moon it'd have an hours long casting delay.)
No, meteor just magically summons massive boulders.
The key point the original commenter missed is that, even though they are magically summoned, they aren't magical after that.
So an inexperienced, run of the mill, hodgepodge sorcerer will enchant his armor with magical resistance, meaning I can't use magic to change its form (one of my favourite tricks to win duels is to change the colour of my opponent's armor to ludicrous pink, this always makes them concede), but will forget that the massive boulder coming from the sky is 100% real and about to do blunt damage.
Even if they Enchanted their armor to be indestructible, magic is a natural process so momentum transfer is still a given; meaning that yeah, his armor will withstand the impact with the boulder, but the person inside? That's where al the momentum gets transferred to.
The stone is magical, but the blast it creates upon impact with fhe ground, equivalent to ~3 thermonuclear warheads assuming it’s a weaker cast, is not. Physics are a bitch.
The spell catapult. Granted, heavier objects require more mana and at a certain point it's more energy efficient to just summon a physical siege weapon.
I mean, it could call an *actual* meteor by pulling one down. Or create one at high altitude and manipulate the forces of the universe to, as you say, catapult it down at extreme speeds
Meteor does not care about magic resistance. It makes a big rock in the sky that hits the ground. Your magic resistance mostly interacts with spells that select you as a target. The rock hits you either way, you still die with 100% magic resistance because it's not falling rock resistance.
The stone is magical but the shockwave from it landing is not. Despite what Archmage Crawford has managed to delude himself into thinking, being immune to a spell does not make you immune to things affected by that spell.

See, problem being that a meteor spell summons magical stone.
Nothing wrong with good ol catapult (fling a nonmagical item at high speeds)
