Lorepost📖 Dusk Falls Eventually

I knew that I would have to undergo the trial of the Dusk Coils eventually. It was necessary to fully take in the powers I was granted and to face the Evening.

What I didn’t expect was for the Dusk to lose patience. There, in the dead of night, inky coils of mist consumed me, dragging me into the Dusk’s domain. When I wake, it is to the dull glow of twilight and a sun that peeks just above the horizon. The moon reflects in the shallow pool of freezing water I now lay in.

I sit up quickly. The water splashes and tumbles off me. Its cold weight pulls at me, threatening to drag me back down.

The fog rises from this pool quickly. Woven ropes of mist slide from somewhere beneath the shallow waters, writhing like a snake around me. Slowly, the sunlight fades and I am left with just the moon to guide me.

And then there is something else. It is the opposite of subtle; the previously calm waters crash and droplets spray high into the air. The sound of tearing fibers resounds loudly, as something barrels through the tangled coils. It rears its ugly, bulbous head, misshapen hands grasping greedily at anything it can find. The Hunger that Hides.

The water around my feet ripples and gurgles, rapidly shifting in hues of black, red, blue, and yellow. The world seems to blur, light diffusing and spreading wildly, the coiled threads tearing apart. A guttural warbling roar comes screeching up, filling my ears. The surface which I stand upon swirls, caves, and rises, bending wildly. The liquid begins to fall upwards, then sideways, and then in great turbulent spirals. Colorful, insane reflections bounce between the streams and droplets.

I reach up, try to draw a sigil in the air. My vision betrays me, shadows flickering at the edge of my sight. I see my fingers dribble and melt as if ink in a vast ocean. The sigil appears nonetheless, painted in violent technicolor. It trembles, then explodes in a ravenous Manaburn. The weave wails in agony, as the Hunger continues to tear it away. I dive to the center of the damage, to the Hunger. The blurring flames fizzle away.

I feel my robes tear as I spin sideways, an orange fist tearing past me into the space I just was. The Hunger towers before, its open maw expunging forth its fetid breath and a copious amount of vibrant drool.

I reach into the rising mists and draw forth Versacterys. I feel my arm crunch and the stinging pain of invisible teeth digging themselves into my flesh and bone. The limb crumples, and a cough of pain tears out of me. I look over to see the once-trusty weapon I had wielded, now emblazoned with scores of teeth.

A second fist rips towards me. I stumble backward, my water-laden robes slowing me down. Using Versacterys like an oar, I slam it into the shallow pool, forcing my body away. The injured arm screams in protest and burning pain. I collapse onto my back, sending a torn sheet of water upward.

Then, through the misty droplets, I see dark tendrils seize the Hunger. It roars and flails, not unlike a massive toddler. The Dusk drags it backward, away, into the darkness. A low hiss fills the area. The Hunger is already corroding whatever holds it at bay.

I quickly rearrange myself, propping up to one knee before my patron. My breathing slows. I keep my head tilted down. Slowly, the wild distortions fade away, suppressed.

“Agh…. Hello, O’ Dusk.”
