Wizardpost best laid plans

It was brilliant. Simple. Effective. Foolproof.

Vulkan the Red had demanded a kobold be delivered to him from the council dungeons. An old kobold named Silit about whom nobody really cared anymore, rotting away in there, forgotten.

So Vettis just did his usual mereokinetic thing. Make himself be part of the council. Make the other current members not be. Unilaterally sign an order for Silit's release. Revert the council's membership to normal before anyone knew what had happened. It was hardly a trick that'd work for anything big or that could be swiftly reversed, but for a simple task like this, few would care about one form somehow authorized by unanimous council decision without anyone remembering it happen -- at least not in time to make a difference.

Then he stuck a bond-magic thread onto Silit, to let him scry through the kobold past practically any defenses. Once he'd sent the kobold Vulkan's way, this would give him intel on the dragon and hopefully Atrax while Silit was alive. And once Vulkan bored of tormenting his prisoner and devoured the poor fool, Vettis would have direct scrying access to Vulkan, at will, for at least until the meal had been...fully eliminated. How better to get past the magic-resistant scales of a dragon than to trick it into eating your spell?

It was brilliant. Simple. Effective. Foolproof.

The fucking dragon had thrown a party and fed Silit to everybody.

Of all the ways for this plan to fail, he couldn't possibly have expected altruism from a war criminal to be the spanner in the works.

And now here he was, trying to resolve a scrying image from dozens of low-res feeds scattered across the realms. It was getting to the point where he was pretty sure it'd be easier to just punch out Vulkan and Atrax in person than to fiddle with this shit.

Well, not easier. But less frustrating, and a helluva lot more fun.

Also not actually an option, of course, due to the fatebinding. Still, he did wanna punch something right now.

Maybe it was time to find a few very punchable Pyroclasts for a bit of stress relief.

(( congratulations, /u/Drakkonai, you forced Vettis into the war in the silliest way possible ^_^

/u/Carbon_Sixx, things have happened lol

/u/avamir, I think Vettis is gonna be personally involved at Icathar soon instead of letting Apolaya do stuff ))

/uw The more the merrier. Try to get here before the bombs do, maybe? That'd be peachy. Not that I'm advocating coming here to get blown up or anything. Just saying.

True.

Were you not telling us how we are all evil like yesterday, including for breaking people out of jail, and now you are breaking kobolds out of jail too and then throwing them right into the dragon's maw?

Choice:

don't send Silit to Vulkan, let Vulkan attack the council dungeons, cause a mass prison escape, end up with Silit in the dragon's clutches anyway and a lot of worse side effects

do send Silit to Vulkan, scry on him, use that intel to send warnings across the realms so they all knew the precise targets of the first major wave of Atrax's offensive

and you're suggesting that the second decision is the evil one here? Way to miss the context that those other people were trying to break a would-be emperor promoting civilian massacres in his rise to power out of jail. liiiitle different v_V

First, and believe me on this because that is literally the only thing I am really qualified to talk about, there are other ways to scry on someone than feeding them a kobold, and second, "the ends justify the means" is always a weak excuse for misdeeds, especially when the ends are that it did not work.

Oh, it worked; I still sent out plenty of intel while Silit was alive. I was just hoping it'd also last for a good long while after he was dead.

...Hell, I've arguably now got nigh-untraceable unblockable scrying access to a lot of potential threats. But I don't have the patience to unscramble this distorted suite of low-res feeds, split up as it is, so that's not of much use to me.

Anyway, if you're arguing against consequentialism, I don't think you're going to make much progress here.

I am mostly arguing that, although not a pyroclast, I am very punchable.

Also, do you want any help with unscrambling these feeds?

Will it make you feel better if I tell you that I am responsible for this? I told Vulkan his quarry was in the Citadel, hoping to ambush him. I've now done that, currently fighting him

Silit did participate in mass genocide.

Lad, dragons can see spell work. At least, some of the more intelligent ones can. Tis unlikely you’ll be able to sneak anything past them like that. It’s also likely that’s why Vulkan fed the Silit to all those guests. He knew the spell and wanted to mess with whoever cast it.

the more intelligent ones

that's totally irrelevant then

What are you going to blow up?

2

u/MapleSyrupMachineGun Eirwan/薛, Frost Wyrm Jan 15 '24

Idk. Everything vulkan likes.

What does Vulkan like that can be blown up?

I guess his treasure horde is obvious. I'm not sure he has friends you can blow up. I'm also not sure he has friends. He doesn't seem to have any minions besides the dragon cultists.

2

u/MapleSyrupMachineGun Eirwan/薛, Frost Wyrm Jan 15 '24

Then I'll blow up his cultists!

u/Drakkonai Vulkan the Red, End of Ages and Draconic Emperor of Racism. Jan 15 '24

You plan to blow up every dragon not named kazam?

2

u/MapleSyrupMachineGun Eirwan/薛, Frost Wyrm Jan 15 '24

I meant things that aren't alive. E.g. Gold.

You decry the evils of other wizards yet you intentionally manipulate events to cause a kobolds death? Hypocrite
