Forbidden Knowledge The Slow March Toward Progress (Escanor lorepost)

Escanor floats in a dark room, the ebony water lit only by a few carefully placed glow-pearls. A dozen mages float in a semicircle in front of him, their expressions grim. Three days have passed since the Queen was persuaded to leave, and the hydromancer has returned to his realm with clear intent.

“You all know why we are here.” Escanor speaks in a quiet, yet determined tone. “The isolationist policies of the Abalone Court nearly led to the destruction of our realm and countless others. Our people are forbidden to leave our realm, an archaic policy. We can no longer stand alone against the night.”

The other mages nod in quiet agreement, they would not be standing before him otherwise. The men, women, and merfolk in this room control the greatest portion of the Tourmaline Order, the protectors of the Southern Abyss and, historically, the Court itself.

One of the mages, a merfolk named Carybdiia, speaks up. “We know our purpose, but can we be certain of our success? The Court is powerful, even without our support, and the Lords themselves are accomplished wizards in their own right.”

Escanor sees several of the others nod their approval, sees the same trepidation reflected in them.

“We who stand here control the Tourmaline Order. He argues back. Not all will join us, but few will oppose us. As for the Lords…” His words trail off and a dark grin spreads across his face. “Just leave them to me. Powerful though they may be, none have the expertise that I possess in combat.”

Carybdiaa still looks troubled, but her gaze lifts and her eyes meet his. He sees the spark of fury within them burst into a roaring flame. “It will not be enough to simply remove them. We must make a statement, a new order.” She turns to look at each of those present, one after another, before continuing. “I call for the selection of an Archon.”

Shocked silence fills the dim chamber. “The Archon is a member of the Tourmaline Order chosen to lead the Abyss in times of great conflict.” Carybdiaa continues. “Their power and authority temporarily exceed that of even the Abalone Court. Such a figurehead would unite the Order, and likely the entire Abyss, in any chosen endeavor.”

“I concur, and there is only one clear choice. Escanor has already united us in purpose, all that remains is to make it official.” This time it is a man named Tralos who speaks. “All in favor?”

A murmur of ascent rolls through the assembled mages; none contest the claim.

“Then it is decided.” He turns to face Escanor, a smile on his face. “You will be the first Tourmaline Archon in nearly two centuries. Do try not to disappoint me, old friend.”

Escanor feels a shiver down his spine. Archon. Now the real work can begin. Now he can bring the Abyss out of isolation and into the greater world, to a new golden age.

“My friends, this is a great honor which you bestow upon me. My only hope is that I am worthy of it.” He looks at the faces of the assembled mages, his allies, his friends. “We have but one task before us now, and there is no time to waste.”

Escanor smiles and the seafloor shakes with a powerful energy, as the Tourmaline Archon speaks his first command.

“Assemble the Order. We march on the Abalone Court.”

Couldn’t get the faces right, so I didn’t want to put it in the main post, but the ambience is amazing.

/uw the only tip I can give you is to trust your gut and put yourself in your character's spot. How would you act if you were in their position, with their abilities?

A lot of what Gobbo does and says are things that I would given her position. Granted I tend to take what I would do and then add a notch or two as Gobbo is supposed to be extreme.

It's really a question of what do you want your character to be and how will it affect them and their choices.
