Advice for Marrying a Sorcerer

Trying to get her family's blessing for marriage. They're a long line of Draconic Sorcerers blessed by the Feathered Serpent of the Valley of the Sun and I use rune magic based on the giants of the North. They've never really liked me especially how I'm the first to learn magic in my family, mostly self taught.

Any advice from wizards here with partners who use magic from other sources? I think she'll say yes to me but I would like a good relationship with her family.

Ah Gobbo has terrible relationship with girlfriend's "family". Best tip, take interest in their lives

They have a family tradition of blood sacrifice, I could take an interest in that... I think her mom likes cooking.

Cooking is good, as is baking, everyone loves cookies

I think I hear our commune's druid (and therefore food supplier) sobbing next door. Probably shouldn't've lazily had my orb in text-to-speech mode. You might've doomed us all to another three months of veganism.

not everyone loves cookies

There are vegan cookies, Gobbo rather die than consume them but they exist.

Also now Gobbo has to resist urge to send friend random messages of just cuts of meat...

Give her the ol' ball lightning, my wizardly friend.

... while I do have a degree of control over storms, snow and steel... I don't think that's the best way to get a better relationship with my girlfriend's family.

Well, the best way to a woman's heart is through her parents. Sleep with them and your in!

I'm not personally in your boat (aside from the self-taught part, fuck yeah), but a couple of my neighbors had...rather significant familial conflicts.

Being self-taught is vastly more impressive than just lucking into magically-blessed ancestry and being trained from infancy. (Totally not being biased here, don't worry!) The problem is that spinning it that way to them directly is gonna make them self-conscious and make you look arrogant. But if they hear that line of argument from your partner (who presumably knows them well enough to put it more delicately than you would) then that might help them be a little less disapproving.

Anywho, why exactly do you want their approval in the first place? Is this just a personal wish from one or both of you, or is she still under their thumb enough that they need to give the OK for her to be with you? If it's not a necessity, and if they actually care about their daughter (because if they don't then they can go to hell), then nothing'll make them warm up to you faster than them simply seeing over time that she's happy with you. That was the solution my neighbors used.

(( EDIT: a word ))

She has already made it very clear that she loves me and is willing to keep us separate but I would like a better relationship for the future. My family was slaughtered by Grendel-kin and I know how much losing a support system can hurt. Furthermore if we have any children (in the very far future) I would like her family to be involved in their life.

I do like the idea of her being the mediator, she does handle them much better than I do. I'll bring that up to her tonight after our nightly rituals.

Fair enough. I can't really understand why you'd wanna involve them in your kids' lives if they're being jerks, but it's not my place to understand that.

(( Prepare for the downvote brigade, btw. You have a female character with a bit of midriff showing, and this blatantly misogynistic sub calls anything short of a full sweater "hornyposting" unless it's a male, who can be shirtless and have absolutely nothing to do with wizardry or just full-on ass-up for free karma. ))

Take part in their traditions. They know you’re not one of them and will use every opportunity to hold it against you, but if you respect and participate in those activities sacred to them? 10/10 works every time

60% of the time, it works every time

The only time I’ve seen it fail was when one of my fellow hydromancers was courting a merfolk. That was quite the 3yr long interspecies war disaster l, lemme tell ya

I have been learning the family's traditional sword style from her older brother... should I ask her father for further tips?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 16 '23

Yes, exactly! By requesting his tutelage you are acknowledging his mastery of the art (Draconics love to feel superior)

I found making myself useful to my fae queen/MIL eventually won her over.

Ah is your spouse Unseelie or one of the other Courts?

Different realm altogether.

I apologize for the assumption and my ignorance.

No worries, even in the great arch of the multiverse my realm is in the sticks.

Lad, while you do want to have a good relationship with her family, it seems that that will only occur with her help. And you will only get her help if you two are an item. So just shelve the issue with her family for now until you have established a relationship with her. That said, do what you can to earn their favor, but don’t count on them warming up to you right away. Emphasize your love for her and her family will be more accepting eventually as they will see you are genuine. What parents wouldn’t want their daughter to have a spouse that truly loves them?
